2 consultants respond to Tacoma Bikeshare Planning Study RFP Posted online Tues., Sept. 29 Article and File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Two consultants have responded to a Request For Proposals (RFP) issued by the City of Tacoma to complete a bikeshare program planning study. Bikeshare programs allow people to check out bicycles for short trips around the city. In October of 2014, the City of Seattle partnered with the nonprofit organization Pronto Cycle Share to introduce a bikeshare system that includes 500 bikes and 50 stations throughout the city. Similar programs have been launched in at least two-dozen U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.; Austin, Tex.; Boston, Mass.; Denver, Colo.; and New York City. The City of Tacoma's 2010 Mobility Master Plan— which is designed to develop a comprehensive network of bikeways and pedestrian walkways citywide— includes a bikeshare program that aims to enhance the city's transportation network and make cycling a more viable option for all. The City issued the RFP earlier this month (see "City issues RFP for Tacoma Bikeshare Planning Study," Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 14, 2015), and published a legal notice in the Tacoma Daily Index announcing the call (see "City of Tacoma Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability REQUEST," Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 10, 2015). The RFP noted the City was looking for consultants with experience helping to create bikeshare plans in other cities. The City has budgeted $60,000 for the study. A one-year contract could be awarded in October. The deadline for consultants respond to the Tacoma Bikeshare Planning Study RFP expired on Tues., Sept. 29. According to information posted on the City's Web site, the following consultants responded to the

Pierce Transit restores bus service between Northeast Tacoma, Downtown Posted online Mon., Sept. 28 Photo Courtesy Pierce Transit Public transit passengers now have two new transportation options for traveling throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. First, Pierce Transit has reintroduced express service between Northeast Tacoma and downtown Tacoma. The new Route 63 is a one-year pilot project to test demand for the service, and it is the first time since 2011 Pierce Transit has been able to offer direct service between Northeast Tacoma and downtown Tacoma. In addition, Pierce Transit has partnered with King County Metro, which is extending its Route 903 to connect with Pierce Transit's new Route 63. King County Metro Route 903 delivers and picks peo-

ple up in their neighborhoods around Northeast Tacoma and at the Federal Way Transit Center. Riders can use an ORCA card to seamlessly ride

both systems. More information about the new Northeast Tacoma Express Route 63, including specific pick-up and drop-off times and locations, is available online at piercetransit.org. Second, Pierce Transit Route 495—which originates at the Puyallup Sounder Station and runs to the South Hill Park & Ride and the South Hill Mall—has changed to Sound Transit Route 580. The new route aims to offer riders several improved service options, such as service to and from the Lakewood Sounder Station; new morning service; and better connections with Sounder commuter rail service. More information about the new Route 580 is available online at soundtransit.org.
