Shipment To China 20 years later, Tacoma public artwork finds exhibit space at Foss Waterway Seaport

Sound Transit News

Sound Transit marks 15 years of Sounder commuter rail service This month marks the 15th anniversary of Sound Transit offering Sounder commuter rail service in the Puget Sound region. According to Sound Transit officials, more than 29 million people have used the popular commuter and game day service since Sounder trains began operating two south line round trip trains with stops in Tacoma, Sumner, Auburn, and Seattle on Sept. 18, 2000. Service to Puyallup Station and Kent Station was added in February of 2001, to Tukwila a month later, and to South Tacoma and Lakewood in 2012. North line service to Edmonds and Everett began in 2003, and to Mukilteo in 2008. Ridership on Sounder has continued to grow, according to Sound Transit officials. Year-to-date, more than 2.1 million people hopped aboard Sounder through July, a 14.7 per cent increase from the same period last year. Average weekday boardings reached 14,804 in July, and 13,929 for the quarter ending in June, increases of 15.3 and 12 per cent, respectively, from the same periods last year. A total of 913,299 people rode Sounder in the second quarter. The numbers of sports fans taking game day trains also grew to a total of 21,859 last quarter— an increase of 14.5 per cent. Sound Transit operates special event service on select dates to Seahawks, Mariners, Sounders FC games, and the Washington State Fair. During racing season, Emerald Downs fans can take these same trains to Auburn Station for a connecting shuttle to the racetrack. The 10 daily round trips currently on the south line will expand to 13 each weekday by 2017 under service expansions approved by voters in 2008. Four round trips each weekday currently operate on the north line, where rider demand is lower and costs for accessing BNSF tracks are higher, according to Sound Transit officials. To mark the 15th anniversary of Sounder commuter rail service, Sound Transit staff greeted morning commuters on Fri., Sept. 18, at Seattle's

Posted online Thurs., Sept. 17 Photo Courtesy City of Tacoma A piece of public art that hasn't been on display for nearly 20 years will soon be unveiled at Foss Waterway Seaport in downtown Tacoma. In 1996, Chinese-American artist Hai Ying Wu created Shipment To China (pictured)—an abstract piece of art made of bronze and resembling boxlike urns that sits on railroad tracks cast in Tacoma in 1909—to honor the lives of Chinese laborers who helped build the transcontinental railroad in the United States during the Nineteenth Century. The City-owned piece was originally destined for Tacoma's Chinese Reconciliation Park, but the evolution of the park's design and safety concerns made siting at the park impractical, according to City of Tacoma officials. "The concept of this piece is to recognize the contributions made by Chinese people in America," wrote Wu in his artist's statement. "The ash boxes bring to light their sacrifices hidden under thousands of miles of railroad track where the bones of Chinese workers were once buried. This piece shows the bitterness of the Chinese experience in America during that time, for the railroad built by their efforts was the same transportation used to carry them back to their homeland, also the same transportation [that] King Street Station with "Happy Birthday" signs and the new service schedule for fall. Sound Transit Route 580 connects Puyallup, Lakewood Sounder Stations Pierce Transit Route 495—which originates at the Puyallup Sounder Station and runs to the South Hill Park & Ride and the South Hill Mall—will change to Sound Transit Route 580 effected Mon., Sept. 28, Pierce County and Sound Transit officials announced this month. The new route aims to offer riders several improved service options, including: Service to and from the Lakewood Sounder Station — Route 495 currently runs only within Puyallup. Express Route 580 will take riders between the Puyallup Sounder Station and the Lakewood Sounder Station, with stops at the SR-512 Park & Ride, the

He went on to create the Seattle Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Pioneer Square Now restored and destined to be on display for the first time since the 1990s, Shipment To China will be part of Foss Waterway Seaport's Rails to Sails exhibit. Shipment To China will be officially unveiled at 3 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 27, at Foss Waterway Seaport, located at 705 Dock St., in downtown Tacoma. The unveiling ceremony will include a lecture by exhibit curator Bud Thompson. Similarly, last year the City of Tacoma sited Tom Morandi's three-ton, bronze and steel Sun King sculpture in a public park along Thea Foss Waterway after it sat in storage for nearly a decade (see "Top Stories 2014: #4 — Sun King Reigns," Tacoma Daily Index, Dec. 24, 2014). City officials held a public unveiling ceremony for the artwork in June of 2014. More information is available online at fosswaterwayseaport.org and cityoftacoma.org/arts. South Hill Park & Ride, and the Washington State Fair’s Red Lot. New morning service — Route 495 currently runs only in the afternoon. The new Sound Transit Express Route 580 will offer morning and afternoon peak time runs between the Puyallup Sounder Station and the Lakewood Sounder Station, with the stops noted above. Better connections with trains — Route 580 will connect with all scheduled Sounder service, including the reverse-commute trains. This offers anyone living in the Lakewood area better access to all Sounder trains on the south line. While Route 495 included a stop at the South Hill Mall, the new Route 580 will not include this stop. More information about the new Route 580, including specific route times, is available online at soundtransit.org/new580.
