Complaint: Car stipends ‘fraud’ A financial analyst says he was pressured to boost the amount of money county officials could claim for vehicles. By Noah Haglund Herald Writer
EVERETT — A Snohomish County financial analyst claims he was pressured in 2013 to
inflate the amount of money that elected officials receive for car reimbursements. James Lee filed a complaint in March describing how he boosted compensation by
more than $250 per month. By basing the rates on more expensive cars from the county’s fleet and covering the full tab for car insurance, Lee said he increased the number from $317.07 per month to $569.32 — an annual difference of more than $3,000. “I generated that
reimbursement level and I can assure you it is completely fraudulent with no basis in law or common sense,” Lee wrote. Eight of the county’s 11 eligible elected officials claim the reimbursement, according to the executive’s office. They are: all five County Council members, Assessor Cindy Portmann,

fastest-growing airline in China. “The dream of flying has made Boeing a successful company and it will inspire Boeing to ever greater heights,” Xi said. “I’m sure our cooperation will be just like a Boeing plane — it will spread its wings and soar into the sky.” The tour came a few hours after the Boeing confirmation of plans by China to buy 300 jetliners. Airlines there will buy 190 737s, which are built in Renton, and 50 twin-aisle planes built in Everett. Another 60 737s are to go to Chinese leasing companies.
MARYSVILLE — A Marysville man is accused of a hit-and-run crash last year that left a teacher in critical care. The teacher was struck by a Dodge Journey while jogging the morning of Dec. 22 along 83rd Ave NE. She was thrown into a ditch from the impact. “She sat up and looked up the road and saw the car pull over and stop but no one got out and it drove off,” according to public records. The teacher, 53, suffered broken bones and organ damage in addition to cuts and bruises, public records show. At the hospital, she had to use a medical device designed to prevent her lungs from collapsing. For months, Marysville police did not release information about the crash while their investigation was ongoing. They wrapped up their reports last week. The case was forwarded to Snohomish County prosecutors for review as a potential injury hit-and-run, a felony under state law. The Herald obtained the police reports through a public records request. The newspaper is not naming the accused driver, 25, as he has not been charged with a crime in the crash. He’s been charged with a hit-and-run before, records show.

“The Boeing Co. has long been a supporter, participant and promoter of business collaboration between China and the United States,” Xi said. “The ties between China and Boeing go back a long way. We purchased the first batch of Boeing planes in 1972. By the end of 2014, China had purchased over 1,500 planes.” Xi noted that he was involved in establishing 787 customer Xiamen Air in 1985, when he was the mayor of Xiamen. Back then, Xiamen Air had a fleet of just over a dozen planes. Xi said that now it is the
