than $1 million in loans. Adams said they learned of the sale through Raymond James Financial, Inc. “We are excited to have the Jefferson and Clallam County employees and customers join the 1st Security family,” Adams said. “We
believe this will be a great fit and is a natural extension of our Puget Sound-focused retail footprint.” Adams said about 25 employees among the four branches will be retained but the total number of

Sequim youth soars with the Seahawks Contributor Shirley Lam spotted these orca (killer) whales near Sequim’s John Wayne Marina early in the morning of Sept. 3. Lam said she counted six in a pod that swam near the marina. “One flipped down into the water and gave us a hello greeting with its tail and swam away with a wave of its flipper,” Lam writes.
School bond topic in limbo with League of Women Voters’ forum Supporters say focus is urging parents to vote Sequim Gazette staff
The candidate forum schedule for the League of Women Voters of Clallam County is confirmed, but one Sequimspecific topic might be left off. Paula Barnes, co-chairman of the voter services committee, said discussing the Sequim School District’s proposed $49.3 million bond is tentative because they only have half of the argument. “The league’s policy is to have an organized support and opposition, and we have the Citizens for Sequim Schools but no opposition,” she said. The forum, set for 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in Sequim City Council Chambers, 152 W. Cedar St.,

Canadian student’s Garry oak studies bring her to Sequim, the Pacific Northwest by MICHAEL DASHIELL Sequim Gazette
For a good portion of her classroom work, Deirdre Loughnan’s study hall becomes a little like this scene in Sequim’s Pioneer Park. With a thick, towering canopy of Garry oak trees providing shade from a brilliant summer sun, she and fellow University of British Columbia student Lukas Jarron leaf through oak leaves. On a previous excursion into the Pacific Northwest and various pockets of Garry oak stands on Vancouver Island, she collected insects and looks for telltale signs of what she calls “damage,” but here, on a late August day in Sequim, she’s simply gathering a random num-

Saul Williams, 11, represents Boys & Girls Clubs in Seattle by MATTHEW NASH Sequim Gazette
Even though Saul Williams just turned 11, he’ll be a 12th man for life. The Helen Haller Elementary fifth-grader and active member at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club just had an opportunity of a lifetime to take part in the Seattle Seahawks’ preseason game against the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 3. He was invited to run on the field and remove the tee with the Hawks’ mascot Blitz after the opening kickoff. To make the event even more special, it was Saul’s birthday and his first time at a football game. In a slightly hoarse voice and still wearing his VIP pass around his neck inside the Sequim Boys & Girls Club the following day, Saul says the experience was “the best experience ever.” “I lost my voice so much I could barely WILLIAMS even hear myself,” he said. Dave Miller, the Carroll C. Kendall unit director in Sequim, said they were given an opportunity from the Washington State Boys & Girls Club to pick one club member and the local club chose Saul. “He’s one of those kids who could be a poster child for the Boys & Girls Club,” Miller said. “We picked him for his participation. He’s in 11 inhouse programs and volunteers for everything, most recently a shred event at Castell Insurance. He’s also one of seven kids.” The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula returned to CenturyLink Field again this year with 12 club members and three adults through the Seahawks’ Spirit of 12 program where Boys & Girls Clubs hand
