After sinkholes filled, Stadium Bowl to reopen Tacoma Public Schools officials announced Friday a team of geotechnical engineers and experts recently conducted a physical investigation of the ground under Stadium Bowl at Stadium High School and discovered no potential new sinkholes. Stadium Bowl was temporarily closed to students and the general public for safety reasons last month due to a recent assessment of three sinkholes that also revealed failures in the underground drainage system. The district called in technical experts from GeoEngineers after a small depression appeared in late-August on the football field on the 15-yard-line nearest Commencement Bay. The district closed the Stadium Bowl field on Fri., Aug. 21, as a precautionary measure, pending a more detailed technical investigation.
A contractor supervised by the local firm GeoEngineers began filling the three existing sinkholes and a slight depression in the southwest end zone on Friday. After the fill work, Sport Install West, an artificial turf installation firm, was expected to repair the cuts in the turf that were made last week so engineers could look at the ground underneath. Stadium Bowl should reopen to all activities by Thurs., Sept. 10, the day after school starts. An investigative team inspected the four-footdeep sinkholes and discovered sand and gravel had washed away from around the underground drainage pipe system. The team also studied computer images of Ground-Penetrating Radar, which showed suspected anomalies that suggested potential sinkhole CONTINUED areas three to 11 feet deep ON PAGE 2
