These big projects are outlined in the six-year Transportation Improvement Program, a planning document that makes projects eligible for grants. It includes arterials like Southeast Issaquah-Fall City Road and Sahalee Way Northeast. The Sammamish City Council approved the plan, 6-1, July 7.
In late November or early December, when the Sammamish City Council reviews the budget, these projects will be reflected. As outlined in the 2016-2021 plan, the city anticipates receiving about $20.1 million in state and federal grants in the six-year span. Of this, $5 million from the

The Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park are seeking donations to fund the opening of a playground in 2016. The state legislature approved $750,000 for the playground but, with a $1 million price tag, the final quarter of the project’s cost must be funded by donations. A countdown on the playground’s donation site, www.Playground4All.com puts the deadline at May 1, 2016. The playground designed by SiteLines Park and Playground Products is slated to replace two playgrounds in Lake Sammamish State Park. Those playgrounds, according to the Friends, are obsolete in terms of safety standards and disability compliance. SEE PLAYGROUND, 3
Route 66 bike trip raising awareness for rare disease BY DANIEL NASH ISSAQUAH/SAMMAMISH REPORTER
An Oregon couple are biking along historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, to raise awareness and money for a rare genetic condition that afflicts their grandnephew in Issaquah.
The 2,400-mile, five-state journey of Jean and Bruce Dransfeldt will benefit RhizoKids International, an Alabama-based foundation that raises funds for the research of Rhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Punctata, or RCDP. RCDP is a condition believed to affect fewer than 100 people worldwide, which
causes severe physical and intellectual developmental delays. Most children with the condition do not achieve developmental milestones such as sitting upright on their own power, and rarely live past 10, according to information from the National Institute of Health. This is the third cross country
bike trip the Dransfeldts have taken together and their second for RhizoKids. “The first one we did was in 2012 in celebration of Bruce’s 70th birthday,” Jean said, speaking Aug. 12 from St. Louis, on a rest day. “Our SEE BICYCLE, 2
