Six shots were fired in the air during a late-night melee Aug. 17 behind the AM/PM convenience store at SE Lund Avenue and Jackson Avenue SE in Port Orchard. No one was hit during the barrage. At least 12 individuals, all in their late teens or early 20s, were involved

in the skirmish, which Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Wilson characterized as a “chaotic situation.” He said the altercation apparently began at the McDonald’s parking lot on Mile Hill Road in Port Orchard and moved on to a small strip shopping area on SE Lund, located across the street from South Kitsap Regional Park.

Wilson said the incident spiraled out of control at the Mile Hill Drive parking lot following an accusation that someone at the scene had almost been run over. The incident was broke up after a spate of name-calling and mutual pushing. Most of the participants left and reconvened behind the convenience store on Lund and Jackson avenues, where more threats

and thrown punches ensued. Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at 9:43 p.m. following multiple 911 reports of a drive-by shooting. According to police interviews with those involved in the incident and witnesses, a 23-year-old male, who was a passenger in a red-colored Acura, went to the trunk of the car,

took out a loaded handgun, and fired it skyward. Fighting stopped at that point and participants scattered from the scene, according to those interviewed by law-enforcement officers. Port Orchard Police and sheriff’s deputies subsequently stopped the fleeing Acura about five minutes later SEE MELEE, A3
