Art Chantry
Tacoma's visual luminary on design history and 'grunge graphics' By Todd Matthews, Editor Local graphic designer Art Chantry created a look and style that singularly evoked Seattle's music scene during the 1990s. The posters and album covers he created for bands and record labels included some of the biggest names in Pacific Northwest music— Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Presidents of the United States of America, The Fastbacks, The Sonics, Sub Pop, Estrus Records, and Rhino Records. Chantry, 60, grew up in Tacoma's Parkland neighborhood, moved to Seattle in the late-1970s (where he became art director of The Rocket) and returned to Tacoma in 2006. Today, he lives near the city's McKinley Hill neighborhood. I recently met Chantry at a downtown Tacoma cafe to discuss his work. Yesterday's edition of the Tacoma Daily Index focused on his connection to Tacoma— growing up in Parkland; moving back to the South Sound after nearly 30 years away; and his thoughts on the local arts community. Today's edition focuses on his new book and his career in graphic design. Our interview has been edited for clarity and condensed for publication. -------------------"I have learned how to design a voice that I can use to speak with and tell this information in a fun and anecdotal way." Computers have pretty much killed off freelance graphic design. People can spend less money buying a computer and a program, spending two weeks with it, and just doing it themselves. How am I supposed to compete with that? I mean, the only thing I've got is my name. There's CONTINUED nothing else that is really all ON PAGE 2 that special. That's just kind
