‘No’ votes lead ‘yes’ votes in early proposition results SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

King County Elections posted its latest round of primary results at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. At the Reporter’s press time, Redmond’s Proposition 1 had a “no” percentage of 53.06 (3,514 votes) and

a “yes” percentage of 46.94 (3,109 votes). Proposition 2 had a “no” percentage of 54.11 (3,589 votes) and a “yes” percentage of 45.89 (3,044 votes). Both propositions need a simple majority to pass. A percentage of 23.78 of the ballots had been

counted: 6,675 out of 28,075 registered voters. Proposition 1 addresses public safety, infrastructure and walkability. If passed, the measure would cost about $18.13 million over the course of six years — just a bit more than $3 million per year.

Under the public safety umbrella, Proposition 1 would go toward maintaining services provided by the city’s 2007 levy measure. A large part of that levy funded for 17 new police personnel to support police operations and programs, including school resource

officers (SROs) in local schools. In addition, Proposition 1 would continue to pay for the 18 firefighters for Fire Station 12 in Overlake and Fire Station 17 in north Redmond who were also hired through the 2007 levy. If passed, Proposition 1

would also fund five new employees for the Redmond Police Department (RPD), including two neighborhood resource officers (NROs), two new officers to focus on property crime investigating and a new fulltime evidence technician. [ more PROPS page 7 ]

Costco Wholesale purchases land in Redmond for $16 million ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@redmond-reporter.com

Costco Wholesale Corporation has purchased 15.39 acres of land south of Union Hill Road in Redmond for $16 million, according to King County records stamped July 31. On July 27, Paul J. Taylor of Taylor Union Hill, LLC and

J. Michael Magnussen Jr. of Magnussen-Cadman, LLC signed a specialty warranty deed as grantors. The future site of the Costco warehouse will be on the two parcels of land on the corner of Northeast 76th Street and 188th Avenue Northeast. A Costco spokesperson said the company’s policy is to not

comment on specific locations, so a possible opening date is not known at this time. In a Sept. 8, 2009 Reporter story, Mayor John Marchione confirmed that Costco planned to open a store on Union Hill, but negotiations between the land owner and Costco stalled, putting the plans on hold. At that time, he declined to com-

ment further about the Costco development, but did say he was optimistic that a deal will get done. In 2015, Marchione is pleased to see Costco’s investment in the city. “Our vibrant economy, strong sense of community and keen [ more COSTCO page 3 ]

Redmond police officers arrested a 20-year-old Renton male at his residence Wednesday for investigation of child molestation charges at the La Petite Academy in Redmond. The suspect was booked into King County Jail and the man hadn’t been charged as of the Reporter’s deadline. According to Redmond Police Department (RPD) public information officer Becky Range, on July 15, a staff member at the academy, located at 8675 161st Ave. N.E., notified police that a family reported child molestation allegations involving a staff member and a 5-year-old child. The academy immediately put the staff member on administrative leave. Range said students’ parents were notified of the incident last week. Range visited with staff members on Wednesday and said that everyone is concerned for the children and their families. Staff members believe there is only one victim, and they have been cooperative with detectives and social agencies during the investigation, Range added. Lydia Cisaruk, La Petite Academy’s director of communication, said: “We take our responsibility as caregivers very seriously. We’re working closely with the regulatory agencies to assist their investigation until this matter is resolved. “We have strict policies and procedures to ensure we’re providing the highest level of care, and we do not tolerate any deviation from these standards. Our focus remains on providing a safe and nurturing learning environment for the children in our care.” [ more ARREST page 3 ]
