MUKILTEO — Two people were injured in a fire Wednesday afternoon that destroyed their home and spread to the neighbors’ house, leaving both families displaced. The fire started about 2:15 p.m. on 110th Place SW in the Harbour Pointe neighborhood of Mukilteo. The cause is under investigation. A man and a woman who live in the destroyed house were taken to the hospital, Mukilteo Fire Chief Chris Alexander said. The man had burns to his hands, and both apparently suffered from smoke inhalation. Their ages weren’t made public Wednesday. At least two vehicles parked outside their home were burned. The firefighting was complicated by a gas line between the two houses. Smoke was visible for miles and flying embers touched off small fires in nearby yards. Crews expected See FIRE, Page A2
OLYMPIA — Tim Eyman is at it again. The professional initiative promoter from Mukilteo is pushing a ballot measure this fall aimed at making it tougher on state lawmakers to increase taxes. And it contains a twist that could reduce state revenues by billions of dollars in the coming years. Not surprisingly, opponents are pushing back hard. They contend Eyman’s Initiative 1366 could devastate the state budget and is unconstitutional. They are suing to keep it off the November ballot. Initiative 1366 would shave a penny off the state’s 6.5-cent sales tax unless a constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds supermajority of the Legislature to raise taxes without a public vote is put on the ballot next year. This is not a new idea. Voters have repeatedly approved such a supermajority requirement but the state Supreme Court struck it down in 2013 as unconstitutional. Part of the problem, justices said, is voters can’t amend the Constitution by initiative. Lawmakers are the ones who must amend the Constitution then let voters ratify or reject the change, the court determined. “The court said you have to do it this way,” Eyman said, in explaining why the measure focuses on getting lawmakers to act. “Clearly a supermajority is what the voters want.” See TAXES, Page A2
The first house was a complete loss; the second was extensively damaged.
Bail hearing deals with suspect’s unknown age EVERETT — It wasn’t your typical bail hearing. On that point, the prosecutor, defense attorney and judge could agree.
The question before the court was one of age. Was the suspect, who’s from the African nation of Gambia, a juvenile or an adult? It appears to be a case of conflicting and missing documents and perhaps a doctored birth certificate.
