It is that time of year for Covington Days once again. The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday and runs through 5 p.m. Sunday. To start the festival first thing on Saturday, Festival Coordinator and Covington Communications and Marketing Manager for the city Karla Slate said, “festivalgoers can expect to have a lot of fun with the parade.” The parade will begin at Real Life Church on 180th Avenue Southeast and end at the festival grounds. Starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Southeast Wax Road from Southeast 272nd Street to Southeast 262nd Place will be closed. The road will reopen when it is safe to do so, according to event organizers. It is estimated the parade will go until 11:45 a.m.

Music festival kicks off fifth year with local bands BY REBECCA GOURLEY Reporter
Planning for the fifth annual VanFest is well underway. The main organizer, Van Wolfe, is a 20-year-old former Tahoma graduate. He started the music festival, which features mostly local and regional bands, when he was 16. For the second year in a row, all of the profits from the event will go to the Maple Valley Food Bank.
After a regular session , three special sessions and considerable blood, sweat and tears, the 2015 Legislature closed the chamber doors July 10. The long and winding budget road that looked for a time to be never ending, concluded with a transportation budget that 47th District Sen. Joe Fain, R-Auburn said brings funds for numerous Joe Fain projects to Covington and South King County. The budget kicked in $13.2 million to complete the funding for widening state Route 516 in Covington to five lanes from Jenkins Creek to 185th Avenue Southeast. The project is estimated to cost $15 million and will include widening the Jenkins Creek bridge, streetlights
Wolfe said he was inspired by Sasquatch, the music festival that typically takes place at The Gorge Amphitheatre near George, Wash. every Memorial Day weekend. He said he wanted the festival to become part of the community, instead of just being located in it. “I’ve been focusing a lot more on making it more of a community event,” Wolfe said. “It’s really something that is for Maple Valley rather than something that happens to be there.”
Since its second year – the first year it was at a barn in Enumclaw – the festival has been located at Royal Arch Park on Southeast Renton-Maple Valley Road. The festival features more than 30 bands, most of them local, in a variety of genres. “I’d say ‘something for everybody’ is a good way to put it,” Wolfe said. In addition to music, the event also features local business vendors. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students (with a student ID). The festival is from 12 to 9 p.m. Aug. 15. More information on the bands playing is at vanfestnw.org.
