Tacoma seeks nominees for AMOCAT Arts Awards
Posted online Mon., July 13 The Tacoma Arts Commission is currently accepting nominations for the 2015 AMOCAT Arts Awards, which aim to recognize individuals and organizations that support and build the local arts community. The three award categories are Community Outreach by an Individual (Community outreach, engagement, and involvement in the arts in Tacoma by an individual); Community Outreach by an Organization (Community outreach, engagement, and involvement in the arts in Tacoma by an organization); and Arts Patron (A community partner who significantly supports or contributes to the arts in Tacoma). "The arts are an essential part of Tacoma's identity thanks to a dedicated community of arts supporters," said Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland. "The AMOCAT Arts Awards highlight the people, organizations and patrons who invest their energy and passion into making Tacoma an engaging and vibrant community." The Tacoma Arts Commission will review all nominations and select one finalist in each award category based on the breadth and depth of the nominee's community impact as well as the quality of the work being done by the nominee, not by the number of times the nominee has been nominated. Tacoma artist Di Nino to discuss Handforth Gallery exhibit July 22
Posted online Tues., July 14 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Tacoma artist Lynn Di Nino (pictured) will present a slide show, lecture, and gallery walkthrough to discuss two exhibits—Riding the express bus Seattle/Tacoma and A Fable—currently on display at Tacoma Public Library's Handforth Gallery. Riding the express bus Seattle/Tacoma consists of 14 vignettes of three-dimensional 10-inch, wall-mounted figures seated next to photographs of landmarks Di Nino captured on her smart phone while traveling via Sound Transit's Route 590/594 Express bus service. Di Nino and the exhibit were featured in the Tacoma Daily Index in June (see "Artist Lynn Di
Nino's creative commute," Tacoma Daily Index, June 5, 2015; and "Tacoma Daily Index Top Stories — June 2015," Tacoma Daily Index, July 1, 2015). A Fable, which Di Nino curated, features more than two-dozen local artists who created their own figures inspired by the parable of the blind man and the elephant. The presentation will be held on Weds., July 22, at 7 p.m., at Handforth Gallery, located at 1102 Tacoma Ave. S., in Tacoma. A few of the participating artists included in A Fable are scheduled to attend the event. More information is available online at tacomapubliclibrary.org.
