For many of her 29 years teaching, Tracy Brown had a classroom at her disposal. No longer. For five years, Brown, a K-5 reading specialist at
Washington Elementary School, and her students have been squeezing themselves into a storage closet. Not even a classroom number on the door to dignify the situation, just “Storage Closet.”

Green River students organize Black Lives Matter rally

Another empty, rock-strewn, block in downtown Auburn. Ah, but in the case of the one off South Division, between First and Second streets southeast, neither empty nor rocky for long. On May 27, local dignitaries joined the top brass of Merrill Gardens and its development partner, Teutsch Partners, LLC, at the lot, talked a bit, grabbed shovels and pitched dirt. All to announce that work is about to start on the senior apartment and assisted-living complex Merrill Gardens expects to open next spring. “I am not, in any way, shape or form going to try to hide my enthusiasm,” said Mayor Nancy Backus. “This has been a long time

Work to begin on Merrill Gardens senior complex

After hearing about and discussing rioting and looting in Baltimore last month, students in Carlos Adams’ Race and Ethnicity in the Pacific class at Green River College decided to take action. They hosted a Black Lives Matter rally on the college’s main campus Monday. The unrest in Baltimore followed the death of Freddie Gray, a young black man who died of a spinal cord injury in police custody. His death comes in the midst of several unarmed black men killed by police across the country over the past year. “I asked the question, “Could (a situation similar to Baltimore) happen here?’” Adams said of the discussion in his class. “The students all felt it could.” The students discussed what they could do about the situation.

“I have my National Board teacher credentials, I should be teaching entire classes, but I can only handle seven students because I have a classroom that barely fits seven,” Brown said.

Auburn’s birthday bash is Friday
