to construction. The city used small in-pipe cameras to inspect all the underground piping in the construction zone during the project design, and again after the voids were discovered, according to Knuckey. Repairs were made as problems were found, Knuckey said. One such instance was to a lateral sewer pipe found near the roundabout. Knuckey said it was fixed during the construction using cured in-place piping, a method that doesn’t require excavation. Following the construction, Knuckey said there was never an indication that the area might pose a problem.

BREMERTON — Bremerton candidates filed for the 2015 election May 15. Several candidates are running unopposed and a few electeds chose not to run again. City council The early candidate for most controversial race is District 6, which reads like the plot to a romantic comedy as long-time incumbent Roy Runyon looks to fend off newcomers Richard Huddy and Runyon’s wife, Kim Faulkner. “She brings a wealth of experience,” Runyon said. “I suspect she would have a different method of discussing issues.” Huddy was understated when asked about the situation. “It’s an interesting situation, to say the least,” Huddy said. Incumbents Greg Wheeler and Leslie Daugs, districts 4 and 2 respectively, are running unopposed. “I pledge to continue to work with our business leaders and property owners; to remove the barriers to creating a vibrant business climate, ensuring economic growth through the creation of job opportunities,” Wheeler said in a press release. “Public safety, well maintained streets & sidewalks, and beautiful parks will remain on my priority list.” School board The Bremerton School Board is already guaranteed to have two new directors. Director Scott Rahm, position 1, chose not to run for re-election and Ken Watkins, position 3, recently resigned. Rahm has been on the

BREMERTON — In an era of shrinking military budgets, Naval Base Kitsap is a growth area. That’s what Capt. Thomas Zwolfer, commanding officer for NBK, told attendees at a Bremerton Chamber of Commerce meeting May 19. Zwolfer said one of the questions people often asked him was about the “B-word.” That’s B for “BRAC,” an acronym for “Base Realignment and Closure.” “Is Naval Base Kitsap going to be BRAC-ed? To my knowledge, no,” Zwolfer said. “Defense (overall) has been shrinking over the last 10 years. You can look at the defense budgets. You can look at the number of ships,” Zwolfer said. BREMERTON — In the early morning hours of May 18, a photo was posted to the Manette Neighborhood Coalition Facebook page showing a man standing in a waisthigh sinkhole near the Lower Wheaton Way roundabout. It was the second sinkhole in less than a week found along the city’s newly paved road. Tom Knuckey, city engineer, said a depression was found in the same place as the sinkhole about a week ago. It turned into a sinkhole late Sunday evening and was repaired Monday morning. The sinkholes don’t appear to be for lack of caution prior
