Gifts From the Heart food bank’s shopping cart drill team will take to the streets collecting donations along the parade route. after the ceremony free hot dogs and drinks will be served, said Lynda Eccles, executive director of the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce. Hot dogs and beverages are provided by Prairie Center Red Apple and The Central Whidbey Lions
Club. While Coupeville holds the only Memorial Day parade on Whidbey Island, it isn’t exclusively for Coupeville. Residents from all over Whidbey as well as visitors attend the event. “It’s a fun event,” Eccles
said. “I think people do come from off island because it’s so unique. “It’s a special parade.” Community groups and organizations from all over the island participate in the parade, like the Gifts From the Heart food bank’s precision drill team, which takes
to the streets to collect food along the parade route. While parade entrants were asked to register by April 30, Eccles said every year she gets entrants as late as the Friday before and lets them in.

The streets of Coupeville will be filled to the brim with patriotism Saturday, May 23, as the annual Memorial Day Parade makes its way down Main Street. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at South Main Street and Terry Road and will go down Main Street to Front Street, up Alexander Street, turning on Coveland Street and ending at Coupeville Town Park. Veterans from around the area can be seen along the parade route riding in classic cars. This year’s parade grand marshal is Harold Johnson, a Pearl Harbor survivor who was aboard the USS Oklahoma and the remaining member of a survivors’ group that participated in Coupeville’s celebration each year. At the park, a remembrance ceremony will be held featuring representatives from Town of Coupeville, Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and area veterans. The All-Island Community Band will perform a “Musical Salute to the Armed Services,” and
