North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics:

Embracing the Changing Face of Cosmetic and Anti-Aging Treatments In the age of selfies and 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day in the U.S., together with the advent of non-invasive, more affordable cosmetic procedures with little to no downtime, more and more women and men are turning to cosmetic and anti-aging treatments to restore a more youthful appearance. With these newer technologies, you no longer need to belong to the 1% club, nor do you have to subject yourself to the significant risks and downtime associated with plastic surgery, in order to enjoy the benefits of these latest technologies.

dermal fillers, thereby reducing lines and wrinkles, but, now, they are also turning their attention to anti-aging, the science of slowing down and even reversing the aging process in the skin. North Sound Dermatology, an award-winning cosmetic, medical and surgical dermatology practice in Mill Creek, recently opened its new aesthetic medicine and anti-aging center, North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics. This aesthetic medicine practice is unique in that it is the product of a highly-respected medical and surgical dermatology practice, whose board-certified dermatologists have earned multiple peer recognitions, including being listed as Top Doctors in

Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, Best Doctors in America and Best Doctors in WA State. Between them, the providers in this practice have over 100 years of dermatology experience. Unlike most medi-spas, spas and salons, where the medical director is typically not a board-certified dermatologist and is often not in the office when the procedures are being done, all treatments at North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics, are either performed by, or are directly supervised by, a board-certified dermatologist.

Many of the providers in the practice are national trainers for Botox and various dermal fillers, as well as for the IPL and laser systems used in the practice, training plastic surgeons and dermatologists around the Our New Aesthetic Medicine and Anti-Aging Center Now Open! country.

Over the past 15 years, cosmetic dermatologists have focused on relaxing frown lines and crow’s feet with Botox, and replacing lost volume in the face with

Dr. Dieter Schmidt, MD FAAD FACMS, who is a double board-certified dermatologist and a fellowship-trained Mohs Micrographic Surgeon (facial skin cancer surgeon), established the practice in Mill Creek in 2008 with the philosophy that you can only deliver the very best patient care if you attract top, board-certified dermatologists to the practice who have subspecialized, and are therefore truly expert in their particular

field of dermatology. It has since become the most comprehensive dermatology practice in the county. National data for complications and lawsuits associated with cosmetic procedures, as reported in the medical literature, is clear that the majority of complications and lawsuits are seen in medi-spas, spas and salons where a board-certified dermatologist was not present at the time of the procedure. “It is wonderful for our cosmetic patients to know that they will be able to see a board-certified dermatologist either prior to, or at the time of their cosmetic treatment, as that gives our patients an enormous amount of confidence that they are receiving the safest and best possible treatment for their particular concern”, said Schmidt. “Typically, people in the Pacific Northwest are a little more conservative than their southern California counterparts, preferring to look rejuvenated, without looking “done”. Fortunately, that is our philosophy too. The goal is to make our patients look younger and more refreshed, but in a subtle way, so that their family and friends are complimenting them without knowing what they had done. Until very recently, the only option to permanently reduce fat and tighten loose, sagging skin under the chin, along the jawline and jowls, as well as the neck, upper arms, abdomen, love handles, upper back and thighs (saddle bags), has been to have plastic surgery. This involves an invasive surgery, usually under general anesthesia, and is not without significant risk and downtime. For the past 20 years, dermatologists have been

researching and developing safe, non-invasive ways in which to permanently reduce fat and tighten loose skin with little to no downtime. Over the years, it became clear that radiofrequency energy was going to be the best way in which to accomplish this. Dr. Schmidt has been following the advances in radiofrequency for permanent fat reduction and skin tightening for the past 15 years, and as there are now close to 30 different radiofrequency devices on the market, all of which claim to achieve great results, it required a long process of careful research and testing many different devices until he finally found the technologies that he felt stood out from their competitors, Vanquish™, Exilis Elite™ and ThermiTight™. We are seeing impressive results and are confident that we have chosen the best devices on the market for noninvasive body contouring. The advantages of the Vanquish™ fat reduction technology over its competitors, like Coolsculpting™, where fat is sucked up into an applicator and frozen, is that we can treat larger areas of fat in a single session, and quicker, than Coolsculpting™ can. Also, unlike Coolsculpting™, Vanquish™ is not painful and is not associated with the numbness and discomfort that so many patients experience for months after having been treated with Coolsculpting™. It is also considerably less expensive than Coolsculpting™. Vanquish™ is used to reduce love handles, muffin tops, abdominal fat, upper back bra fat, as well as saddle bags and other unwanted fat on the thighs and arms. One of the main advantages of the Exilis Elite™ system over its competitors is that it is not associated with the pain issues that many of these other devices have,

especially Ulthera™ (Ultherapy™) and Thermage™. It is also much cheaper than Ulthera™ and Thermage™, as it does not have the very expensive consumables that these other devices have. Unlike many of these competing devices, Exilis Elite™ can be used virtually anywhere on the body, making it very versatile. Another great advantage of these technologies is that they have been proven to stimulate new collagen and elastin production, which results in thicker, more elastic, younger-looking skin, making it a true anti-aging treatment. North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics also offers Botox and Xeomin to relax frown lines and crow’s feet, and dermal fillers like Juvederm, Radiesse, Belotero and Artefill to replace lost volume in the face, thereby smoothing out lines and wrinkles on the cheeks, under the eyes and around the mouth. “Some of our providers are national trainers for Botox and these fillers, training plastic surgeons and dermatologists around the country in the best use of these products”, says Schmidt. We are also a national training center for several of the laser and IPL technologies that we use, including the Palomar/Cynosure Icon™ IPL and fractional laser skin resurfacing system, and the BLU-U™ power photofacial device. These devices are used to treat brown spots (age spots, sun spots), red blood vessels from rosacea and sun damage, unwanted hair, as well as wrinkles and scarring from acne, surgery or traumatic injuries. You can visit North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics at www.northsoundderm.com, or you can call one of their cosmetic consultants at 425275-4411 for more information. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

When Physical Therapy Can Help Physical therapy and recovery from injury

Physical therapy can help you recover from an injury and avoid future injury. Your physical therapist can help you reduce pain in the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and ligaments), build muscle strength, and improve flexibility, function, and range of motion. He or she can also evaluate how you do an activity and make suggestions for doing the activity in a way that is less likely to result in an injury.

Physical therapy and chronic health conditions

Physical therapy can help you live more easily with chronic or ongoing health conditions such as spinal stenosis, arthritis, and Parkinson’s disease. Your physical therapist will work with you to establish your goals. Then he or she will create a program of educational, rangeof-motion, strengthening, and endurance activities to meet your needs.

Physical therapy and health conditions requiring a rehabilitation team approach

Some conditions involve several body systems and can lead to significant disability. These conditions—such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and major cardiopulmonary (heart and lung) problems—are usually addressed by a team of health professionals through programs such as cardiac rehab and stroke rehab. The team can include doctors; nurses; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; psychologists; and social workers, among others. Physical therapists are a critical part of this team. They address the issues of range of motion, strength, endurance, mobility (walking, going up and down stairs, getting in and out of a bed or chair), and safety. The physical therapist may also get you the equipment you need, such as a walker or wheelchair, and make sure you can use the equipment appropriately.

Physical therapy and significant health conditions of childhood

Physical therapists also work with children who have major injuries or health conditions, such as cerebral palsy. They address the usual CONTINUE ON PAGE 9

How often should I visit the dentist?

For most people, seeing a dentist every six months is sufficient. However, if you smoke, if you tend to develop cavities, or if you have other dental problems, you may need to visit your dental clinic more often. It is up to your dentist to determine the frequency of visits necessary to maintain healthy teeth and mouth. Does your insurance plan only reimburse your dental cleanings once a year? Paying out-of-pocket in between those annual checkups is well worth the expense if your dentist recommends more frequent visits. If your mouth, gums, and teeth require extra care, not taking care of them will have an impact on your overall health and appearance. Remember that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

taining your oral health. Choose a clinic that meets all your needs, and don’t miss any appointments.

Why is it so important to floss every day?

There are a few very good reasons why you should use dental floss on a daily basis. First of all, over a third of the surface of your teeth cannot be reached with a toothbrush. That’s a lot! Just think of all the food debris that gets stuck between your teeth and in your gums.

Not only can flossing remove these particles, but it also removes plaque, an invisible sticky film composed of bacteria that accumulates and hardens to form tartar, a source of cavities. Flossing also prevents gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), which can lead to tooth loss and bad breath. Dentists recommend flossing every day because 24 to 36 hours is enough time for plaque to turn into tartar. At that rate, one day without flossing between your teeth is a day too much. Be sure to ask your dentist or hygienist to show you how to floss properly when you go for your next cleaning. A few minutes a day will help you keep your teeth and gums healthy; it’s well worth the effort!

If you are not comfortable with your current dentist, there is nothing preventing you from going elsewhere. The relationship of trust between you and your dentist plays a key role in improving and main-

What should I do for my dry skin? Dry skin is a very common problem spanning all age groups. Using the correct moisturizer is important. The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately after bathing to retain water on the skin. Coconut oil and cream based products are superior to lotions.

What kind of sunscreen should I use? A sunscreen of at least 30 SPF with broad spectrum coverage against UVA and UVB rays is recommended. Most people forget the importance of reapplying sunscreen every 2-3 hours as it will break down over time particularly with water exposure or sweating. Sun protective clothing should also be a part of your first line of defense. submitted by Skagit Regial Clinics

I need home care services. Can I get help paying for such services?

Experience Matters

30+ Years of Whidbey Caregiving Most of us want to age in our own homes. IHN has helped thousands of Whidbey residents do just that. Founded and managed by nurses.

Bathing and personal care Meal preparation Light housekeeping Shopping and transportation Medication Assistance Cheerful companionship And so much more We accept private pay, long-term care insurance, VA, L&I, and Medicaid (COPES, DDD, MPC, and Respite)

That depends what kind of home care services you need. If you need help with cooking, cleaning, bathing, shopping, and other such tasks, those are considered “custodial care”. Medicare and regular insuance policies don’t cover that kind of service, but there are many other sources of financial assistance. If you are Medicaid eligible, there are a number of programs such as COPES, MPC, DDD, and Respite that will pay for caregivers to assist you. If you are a veteran or the spouse of a veteran, contact your provider for a referral to the VA home care services program. Many people have long-term care insurance policies that are designed to help with paying for custodial care. If none of those are available to you, don’t worry. Home care agencies are very affordable and most people pay for their home care services out of pocket.

What should I consider when choosing a home care agency?

Cost is obviously a factor, though it shouldn’t be the only thing you consider. Washington State has excellent laws on the screening, hiring, and training of caregivers, so all agencies will be pretty good on those points. Longevity is an important factor—how long has the agency been around? Generally, the more experience the better. Another factor is size. The agency should be big enough to be able to provide a good choice of caregivers and to easily provide substitutes when the need arises. What is the reputation of the agency? Ask your friends and neighbors. Finally, when you call and talk to them, what does your gut tell you? Some agencies will just feel more compatible with your needs. Remember, whichever agency you choose, be proactive. If things are not right for you, speak up and give the agency a chance to make corrections. If after a fair trial, you still aren’t getting what you need, another agency might be a better “fit”. submitted by Island Home Nursing

Should I have my eyes checked every year? How often you have your eyes checked depends on your age, your health and your family history. Ideally, it is best to see an optometrist every two years. However, people who wear glasses or contact lenses should have their eyes checked every year. Your optometrist may recommend more frequent monitoring if you have any problems or a family history of diabetes or glaucoma. After the age of 65, an annual or biennial examination is recommended. Children should have their eyes examined at the age of six months then again at three years old, five years old and annually during their school years. Whatever your age or your children’s age, it is always best to make an appointment for an eye examination whenever any eye discomfort or problems occur, such as eye pain, a feeling of pressure in the eyeball and difficulties with distance or close-up vision.

What can I do to reduce eyestrain after a day at the office? Focusing on an object for long periods of time will tire your eyes. You can reduce this eye fatigue, caused by hours of sitting in front of a computer screen, by taking short breaks on a regular basis. You should also ensure that your surroundings are suitable for working with a screen. It is especially important to position your screen at a good distance from your chair (at least at arm’s length) and eliminate all sources of glare. A computer screen is already bright enough; it doesn’t need additional lighting. In other words, don’t place it directly under a light or facing a window. Eyestrain can also be caused by an overheated room where the air is too dry. Put all the odds on your side by having your eyes examined regularly by your optometrist. This specialist will be able to detect potential problems with your eyesight (peripheral vision, near vision, hand-eye coordination, etc.). As you need all of these to work with a computer screen, a problem with only one will tire your eyes even more.

Living food is healthy food

Living food, or raw food, is a popular topic of conversation these days. Advantages. You never feel hungry with this diet, as it is rich in dietary fiber and plant proteins and low in fat. Disadvantages. Eating only living foods can become monotonous.

The right balance?

Including living foods in your daily diet is always a good idea, as cooking destroys some of the vitamins and minerals in many foods and reduces their anti-carcinogenic potential. All in all, eating a little of everything, in moderation, is definitely the best way to go.

Your Health Potential Lies Within. Our job is to set it in motion. Dr. John Raymond DC

Laughing is good for your health Laughter is often said to be contagious, which is great. Why? Because laughter is good for your health. Did you know that laughter relieves pain? In fact, it encourages the production of endorphins, the natural morphine, and catecholamines, which are hormones with anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, endorphins, also called “happy hormones,” make laughing a great antidepressant and a remedy against anxiety and stress. And on top of all that, laughter decreases excess cortisol, one of the stress hormones. Laughing also causes muscles to relax and helps relieve tension, which in turn reduces stress and promotes sleep. Laughter also helps regulate bowel transit time and it stimulates digestion. How does that happen? Laughing “massages” your internal organs. So, there’s nothing like some hearty chuckles to prevent constipation. And that’s not all: laughter increases the production of antibodies, improves blood circulation and reduces blood pressure. It also makes you more alert by improving blood and brain oxygenation. Howling with laughter is beneficial for cognitive functions such as creativity, memory and analytical skills. Not surprisingly, laughter facilitates social relationships. Don’t you feel more connected to someone after you’ve shared a good joke together? Laughter is a remedy with many virtues. And it’s free.

Whidbey General Hospital’s Anniversary — 45 and Focused on the Future Forty-five years ago, the dream of a hospital for Whidbey Island became a reality. As early as 1944, Whidbey residents were concerned that there was no medical facility on the island, and that those in need of urgent or general care were forced to make the trek to Anacortes, Everett or Seattle. By 1957, a group of spirited citizens

set a goal to establish a hospital and began a 13-year campaign to get Whidbey General built. By 1969, the Whidbey Island Hospital District had been formed and six guilds were raising money for the hospital, which opened March 10, 1970. After 45 years, Whidbey General continues its dedication to the community, including the building of a new

state-of-the-art inpatient wing. With the project’s completion in 2017, it will have been 50 years since the original hospital design was finished. Much has changed in five decades of hospital care, but one thing remains the same. The commitment to excellent, locally-controlled healthcare that inspired our past, also guides our future.
