Northshore teachers walk out to protest lack of state funding

Hundreds of people around the Northshore area supported local teachers in their walkout on May 6 by bringing protestors coffee, wearing red

and marching alongside the educators through Bothell.

The march was part of walkouts staged across the state in protest of the state legislatures failure to fully fund basic education as

found in the Washington State Supreme Court’s McCleary decision.

“It’s really important that we hear their voice and that we listen,” said Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe at the rally. “I think this is

a wonderful turnout today. If they don’t speak out then no one will listen.”

ay 11-15 is the filing period for elections in Washington state. Incumbents and challengers have until the end of today to file with the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC).

According to the PDC’s website, there are numerous candidates for both Bothell and Kenmore as of 3 p.m. on May 12.

In Kenmore, Mayor David Baker, Brent Smith and Stacey Danuski have already filed for reelection to their respective seats.

Baker’s position as mayor is voted on by the councilmembers.

“I’m running for election because I love my city and we are just starting to accomplish so much, and I want to continue moving in that direction,” said Baker, who holds position 5. “I’m very excited about Kenmore’s future and I want to be part of it.”

“I think that our community needs a little more transparency and openness on our council,” McNeal said. “[And] so that the community can get more involved in some of the decisions that are being made in the community.”

Local teens with Friends of Youth ride first flying Orca

enmore Air’s newest seaplane addition is all about opportunities - the opportunity to educate the Pacific Northwest about Orca and an opportunity for children in transitional housing to get an incredible view of Seattle while speaking with those who helped create this awareness effort.

The Seaplane started from the efforts of Michael Hays and Anna Gullickson, cofounders of the Wild Orca educational non-profit and pilots for Kenmore Air, who wanted to spread awareness about the plight facing these local giants.

According to Hays, the

most difficult aspect of the project was funding the seaplane repaint and the educational materials. However, there was support to get the job done; the seaplane was funded and scientists gathered information for the informational packet, now found in each of Kenmore Air’s seaplanes, concerning the ways humans negatively impact the lives of orca.

“It’s fantastic, this has been a project we’ve spent about a year on… and this is really the culmination of it,” said Michael Hays, cofounder of Wild Orca and a pilot for Kenmore Air. “What we want is for it to help killer whales by raising awareness for the issues, we want to grab peoples’ attention, and we want to turn the conver-

sation to the things that are affecting them right now and the small things people can do to make a difference.”

However, during the inaugural flight, there was a chance to improve the lives of kids while also educating about the plights of orcas.

“To be honest, I’m terrified because I’ve never been on a small plane, but it’s the day to face your fears with my friends,” said Jason, one of those chosen from Friends of Youth’s charges.

“All the businesses in the region ought to think of the reason that we’re here, about the amazing ecosystem and animals.”

For most of the kids going on the inaugural Orca seaplane ride, this had been their first trip in any kind of plane, let alone a seaplane painted like a killer whale.

Metal object 6.5 pounds crashes through roof of Bothell home

A

6.5-pound object crashed through the roof of a home in Bothell on May 6.

According to the Bothell Police Department, the metal item appears to have been a large debris grinder from a construction job-site approximately 1,500 feet from the victim’s residence.

“It was at about 11 a.m. this morning and it was a private residence,” said Bothell Police Sgt. Ken Seuberlich. “No one was injured but the damage to the home is pretty good.”

The object, which is about 5.5-inches long and 2.5-inches wide, is one piece of ragged metal with two holes in it.

Had someone been hit with the object, which landed in the master bedroom, Seuberlich said that it would have “definitely” killed them.

The object left a large hole in the roof of the home in the 1900 block of 232nd Street. The home is approximately three blocks from I-405.

“The homeowner brought it in to us this morning,” Seuberlich said.

I also support families who can be considered as part of our vulnerable population, for whom a one day walk-out by our teachers creates, not an inconvenience, but a hardship. I do not believe that the two concepts – supporting teachers and supporting families – is mutually exclusive.

It was my hope that the teachers would vote, not to close school for a day, but to “walkout” during their early release time, thus sparing those families any hardship, while still achieving their goal of drawing attention to the educational funding crisis in this state. I do not know whether or not that was presented to the teachers as an option.

The teachers have voted to approve a one day walkout. While I do not think that is the best way to get their point across, I do still support them in their struggle to get our legislators to “fix” the funding problems. I have reached out to families in my community who may need help on May 6 when the schools are closed for the day. I hope others will do the same. I also hope others will join me as I participate with the teachers in one of their afternoon rallies on May 6.

We are all in this together. You know, the whole “it takes a village” thing. We are that village! Let’s work together to support our teachers and school district staff, as well as the families in our community.

It’s horrible. For example, what if you were walking home and you got hit by a car? How would you feel?

Instead of sending them home for a day, they should instead teach our children about how schools are funded, illustrate why it is inequitable and explain what it means that schools are underfunded. They should encourage our students to take actions, such as writing letters to their representatives and even protesting.

Simply sending them home does a great disservice to students. Rather than empowering students to become advocates for adequately funding education, teachers have chosen to make them victims of a battle they know nothing about and do not understand.

teacher earner in the Northshore School District is an elementary school teacher whose total compensation package is $91,432 per year. In contrast, the average pay for earners during 2012 in Washington State, according to the Office of Financial Management, was $52,945 and nationally $49,612.

According to Leanna Albrecht, communications director for the Northshore School District, teachers are paid their salary over the 12 months

of the year so there are no pay gaps during school breaks. Some continuing education is also financially supported by the school district and the Northshore School Foundation.

While the law is open to expert interpretation, those in attendance were not pleased with the results of the investigation and made their feelings known.

“I don’t mean to be a killjoy, but we have a cancer. Integrity and what I call corruption in this city doesn’t start with Freed. It’s only the beginning,” James Barnhart said during the May 5 council meeting. “I think we have to cut the cancer out and get rid of it.”

Many have noted that, while no laws appear to have been broken, the

confidence of citizens in their government has been negatively impacted.

“It might be legal, but it sure doesn’t feel right,” Samberg said.

Many on the council noted that this has been a “learning lesson,” that the council hopes to move forward with mutual respect and that citizens read the report document available in PDF form at the Bothell City website.

Samberg has also requested an agenda item in the near future to have a discussion concerning a viable ethics code.

The Sammamish River has been identified as a salmon spawning stream and its ecology is tantamount to the protection of salmon and the predators who feed off of them.

The Sammamish River’s primary importance is as a migratory corridor for adult and juvenile salmon as they return to the watershed to spawn and leave as juveniles to grow in the ocean. The WRIA 8 Plan identifies habitat restoration along the Sammamish River as critical to restoring Chinook to the North Lake Washington basin,” WRIA 8 wrote in a letter of support to OneBothell. “This site offers a unique opportunity to protect a large undeveloped space in a primarily urban area, and protection would set the stage for potentially noteworthy habitat restoration work benefitting ESAlisted Chinook salmon and other fish and wildlife.”

Having the discussion this far wouldn’t have been possible without the community support that

OneBothell has organized to preserve the Wayne Golf Course land for citizens.

WSP investigating missing money from BPD

Somebody took money from a safe in the Bothell Police Department evidence room, and the Washington State Patrol now is conducting a criminal investigation.

A police captain discovered an undisclosed amount of money was gone during a routine audit Jan. 20.

That led to separate internal and criminal investigations. Both are ongoing.

“It just makes it cleaner when you have an outside agency come in,” Bothell police Sgt. Ken Seuberlich said. “It’s standard practice.”

The police department’s evidence room coordinator immediately was placed on paid administrative leave in January. He was fired Feb. 17 from the noncommissioned position.

The employee had held the job for 24 years and had no previous disciplinary action taken against him.

Seuberlich declined to say how much money was

missing. He said that was because the investigation is ongoing.

“I can’t tell you the quantity, but it was enough for us to activate a criminal investigation,” he said.

Seuberlich also had no information about why the money allegedly was taken.

“I can’t really speculate on what caused the employee to do what he did,” he said.

The Washington State Patrol also is not providing specifics.

“We were asked to confirm some irregularities in the handling of evidence,” State Patrol spokeswoman Bob Calkins said. “The investigation is still ongoing so that’s about all I can say.”

The State Patrol will forward its investigation to King County prosecutors for a filing decision, he said.

Bothell police continue to do an item-by-item audit of the evidence room to make sure nothing else was taken. It has informed defense attorneys of the missing money, Seuberlich said.

Parent, community preview of secondary instructional materials The Northshore School District is concluding a curriculum review and selection process of English/Language Arts textbooks for students in grades 10-12. The textbooks, which are primarily intended for courses titled English 10, English 11 and English 12, include a writing text and a nonfiction anthology for each grade.

The textbooks under consideration for student use in the fall of 2015 will be available for parent and community review from 3-6 p.m. on May 20 at the Administrative Center, located at 3330 Monte Villa Parkway in Bothell.

English teachers who participated in the pilot textbook project will be present to answer questions.

A person reported returning to their apartment to find the water service had been shut off and the lights had been turned on. The person is unsure how entry was made, however she was not in the residence for approximately 11 hours. The victim contacted the home owners association and was told that work had been done, but their residence was not on the list of homes to be fixed. There was nothing missing.

May 4

April 15 A person reported a male neighbor attempting to throw a punch at her while she was loading her car along Northeast 190th Street. There were prior verbal arguments in the past. Officers determined there was

When she returned half an hour later, the purse was gone along with her credit cards, insurance cards, cell phone and driver’s license. The victim reported the loss of cards to the credit card companies.

A person reported being the victim of $2,744 in fraudulent charges on their debit card. The card has been cancelled.

A victim was parked in the driving lane waiting for his girlfriend to finish a store purchase when a male suspect came up behind them on the road and flashed their high beams. The victim told the suspect to wait a minute, but the suspect came up to the vehicle. The victim got out of the car and words were exchanged. The suspect then punched the first male and left the area.

April 16 A person reported being confronted by a neighbor

A loss prevention officer of a store along highway SR 527 caught an employee stealing from the store.

The approximate value of items stolen was $313.

The suspect was contacted, cited for theft in the third degree and then trespassed from the store.

A driver reported being the victim of a road rage incident along highway SR 527 after the suspect cut the victim off twice along I-405. They both exited the freeway and words were exchanged. The suspect told the victim to pull over, which the victim did. A verbal argument began again when the suspect began to attack the victim. A passenger in the suspects vehicle talked the person back into their vehicle and the two left the scene. A license plate was obtained and authorities attempted to make contact with the

Kenmore residents approaching Kenmore Village probably saw an unusually green sight in the parking lot on May 6.

“That was really exciting to see somebody actually write us a ‘love note’ like that,” said Kenmore Mayor David Baker. “I was overwhelmed at the generosity and act of caring in the community involvement.”

According to Baker, his favorite activity at the new parklet is the beanbag toss.

This new addition, a parklet created by Mainstreet Property Group LLC, is one of the many ideas created during the “For the love of Kenmore” event hosted by the city last month.

Other ideas from the For the Love of Kenmore are being planned, such as the Lake Washington ‘monster,’ a life-sized heron’s nest made from recycled materials, and rain-activated scavenger hunts around the Kenmore downtown.

April 27 A resident of a bottom floor unit at the Heron View Apartments on 73rd Avenue Northeast was the victim of a burglary. There was no forced entry however, there was $7,000 stolen from a hiding spot in the kitchen.

April 30

A driver was found to be driving while under the influence and for heading down in the wrong direction down a one way road, near the 7200 block of 68th Ave. NE.

A person was stopped near the intersection of Northeast Bothell Way and 65th Avenue Northeast for driving with a suspended or revoked license and a misdemeanor warrant. The person was not arrested, was not booked, and their vehicle was not impounded.

Heavy equipment was stolen from a large lot near the 7000 block of NE 192nd St. Included in the theft was a lawn mower, a wagon and a wood chipper were taken from the lot.

A person at the Northshore Townhomes reported a break in at their unit. Guests allegedly took items from their home.

A person reported fraud on their Bank of America account.

Everyone from small toddlers to business members to dogs have enjoyed the parklet,” Cartwright said. “Mayor David Baker was one of the first visitors to the park and was so thankful for the idea. In fact, he was the first to post it to his Facebook page and referred to it as Kenmore’s first ‘love note.’”

The first of what the city hopes will be many ideas brought to life is the parklet now open at Kenmore Village.

“I’m flabbergasted at the amount of attention this has received,” Baker said.

“They’re just really pleased.

They understand it’s something temporary and something to be enjoyed.”

One mother took her two kids there the morning the parklet appeared and had a blast, even giving photographic proof of said fun to the Reporter.

...obituaries John Bruce “Jack” Sutherland III

John Bruce “Jack” Sutherland III, 96, of Lacey, WA, formerly of Bothell, WA, passed away April 24, 2015. He was born February 12, 1919, in Chicago, IL, to John B. and Margaret P. Sutherland. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA, the University of Illinois (BS), and Washington State College (MS). On October 5, 1941, he married Lois K. Larner in Warsaw, IL. He served as an officer in the 10th Cavalry Regiment (the Buffalo Soldiers) and then in the Army Air Corps in Australia and New Guinea. He worked for 35 years as an engineering manager at Boeing.

Jack served the Boy Scouts of America as Cubmaster, as leader of Boy Scout hikes across the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, as founder and Skipper of the Bothell Sea Scout Ship “Wanderlust,” and as District Commissioner, starting several new Cub Scout packs. In 1968, he was awarded the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service to the Chief Seattle Council of the BSA. His 12 years of service on the Northshore School Board (Bothell) included a term as chairman; he also served as chairman of the Men’s Club of the Northshore Senior Center.

More recently, he established the Sutherland Family Scholarship for Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education and, in 2014, he was named to the Northshore School District Wall of Honor.

Jack was a faithful member of the Bothell United Methodist Church and St. Andrew’s UMC in Lacey. Other interests included sailing, canoeing, home construction, and tree farming.

He served as president of the Upper Puget Sound chapter of the Washington Farm Forestry Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; his brother, Robert G. Sutherland; his sister, Margaret Sutherland Couch; and his son, Robert F. Sutherland. Survivors include his son, John B. Sutherland IV (Fatemeh), of White Hall, AR; and his daughter, Janet L. Sutherland, of Bremen, Germany.

Services were held at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Lacey, WA on May 7, 2015, with burial in Floral Hills Cemetery in Lynnwood, WA. Arrangements are through Funeral Alternatives of Washington, 360-753-1065.

Katie Diekema, a senior from Inglemoor High School, was selected by WIAA staff as one of the Athletes of the Week for achievements in Track & Field.

Diekema won the Bellevue Invitational in the 800-meter run in a personal best time of 2-minutes, 19.8-seconds, winning by more than a second.

In recognition of their accomplishment, each Athlete of the Week winner receives a congratulatory letter from WIAA Executive Director, Mike Colbrese, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week t-shirt, and a certificate. Winners are also posted to the WIAA website at www.wiaa.com.

There’s heated seats and climate control for the front seats, a sound system that is audibly great (the bass will vibrate your mirrors, you are forewarned), and the ride is comfortable even on the most bouncy of unpaved, dirt backroads.

District Softball Team Bothell High School junior Kendra Heyer was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Softball Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 7.

Heyer has a 3.99 GPA as a Speech Pathology major.

On the field Heyer has started 12 games primarily in right field hitting .208 during conference play with six total runs scored, two extra base hits, one home run and three RBIs on the season.

Heyer earned the honor in the district that included the states of Delaware,

Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

“Kendra is the consummate student athlete,” said head coach Ron Shoemaker. “She is carrying a 3.99 GPA after two and a half full years. She is on pace for another 4.0 semester.

She takes her studies very seriously, prioritizes well and should be a role model to everyone.”

All in all, this was a great car with zero distractions inside the car. I had an incredible time on the mountain roads in southeast King County on the way out to a hike and had an incredible time on the way back!

Any car that can handle the Forest Service roads of Washington State can handle anything the city throws at it.
