Smokehouse to re-open?

Is the former Smokehouse Restaurant, located at the LaPush Road junction, about to become the next location in Clallam County for recreational marijuana? The former dining establishment currently houses a small medical marijuana business. According to Shon Harris, marketing and public relations spokesman for a company called New Vansterdam, big changes are coming. In a phone interview, Harris said remodeling has begun and the company hopes to be open for business by June. Described on its website as the largest recreational marijuana retailer in Washington, plans include re-opening the restaurant and using the upstairs portion of the building for the marijuana business. Harris also said there are plans for a souvenir shop and possibly re-establishing the fish smoking business. “We want to make a comfortable place for tourists and locals,” Harris said. The City of Forks confirmed that it has received a notice from the Liquor Control Board regarding the transfer of a marijuana license from the former 110 Business Park to the address of the former Smokehouse Restaurant. High Grade Organics-Edibles and Smoke Shop currently holds the license. They did not return calls or e-mails confirming these details. The future of the medical marijuana business currently renting a spot in the building is uncertain.

The Coast Guard suspended the search for the master of the 52-foot fishing vessel Sea Beast after more than 17 hours of searching near the Quillayute River. Three other fishermen from the capsized fishing boat were rescued. The search was suspended at approximately 9:30 p.m. May 3 and covered more than 498 miles around the target area. Twelve individual searches were conducted by Coast Guard assets, including a Coast Guard Station Quillayute River 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew, two MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria and the Coast Guard cutter Blue Shark crew, homeported in Everett. “One of the hardest decisions the Coast Guard has to make is when to suspend a search for a missing person,” said Cmdr. Brian Meier, of the Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound response division. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the friends, family and loved ones of the vessel captain.” The Coast Guard initially rescued the three fishermen after the fishing vessel reportedly took on water, capsized and subsequently sank 14 miles offshore of the Quillayute River, Sunday, May 3. Weather on scene at the time of the sinking was reportedly 5 to 10 mph winds and 4-foot seas. The Sea Beast reportedly is homeported in Neah Bay.
