Pierce County offers free composting classes Image Courtesy Pierce County Residents can learn how to compost at home by attending Pierce County's free classes this spring. Pierce County will offer a food waste composting class and a yard waste composting class, along with a class that teaches both techniques in one session. "These classes are a great way to learn about the kinds of composting you can do at home," said Mary Coleman, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities environmental educator. "Whether you are a beginner or have been composting for years, you'll learn something new." The food waste composting class shows how composting food scraps with red worms reduces the amount of kitchen waste a family sends to the landfill. Food waste composting is a great solution for people who live in apartments or have small yards. Compost produced by worms can be added to potted plants and small landscaped areas. "Feed your worms instead of your trash can." said Coleman. "You'll have less trash to set out at the curb and the nutrients in the food scraps make wonderful compost for your plants." Food waste class attendees can purchase a $30 starter kit that includes a bin and worms. In the yard waste composting class, students will learn how to choose a bin, where to put it and how to maintain a healthy compost pile. "By adding compost to your garden and landscaping, you can improve soil quality and eliminate the need for costly chemical fertilizers," said Coleman. Classes will be held between Weds., May 6, and Tues., June 23. Register online at piercecountywa.org/ compost or call (253) 798-4133. The classes are taught by environmental educators from Pierce County Public Works and Utilities.

Tacoma to donate iconic Lincoln District street lamps Article By Todd Matthews, Editor Photos Courtesy City of Tacoma Are you interested in owning an iconic piece of Tacoma's Lincoln International Business District? If so, dozens of bright red ornamental street lamps that once lined the neighborhood's sidewalks are being offered up for donation by the City of Tacoma. Last month, the City replaced more than two-dozen street lamps with new light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs (see "LED street lights coming to Tacoma's Lincoln International Business District," Tacoma Daily Index, March 2, 2015). As a result, the old fixtures have been repackaged in boxes that were used to ship the new light fixtures, and are now being offered up by the City. "Several community members have told me they were interested in the fixtures," Debbie Bingham, the International Program Development Specialist in the City of Tacoma's Community and Economic Development Department, told the Tacoma Daily Index this week. "This is one of the reasons we put them up for surplus — to see if someone can reuse them and not simply recycle them." Bingham noted the light fixtures are over 20 years old, yet have no historical significance other than "possible

sentimental significance to the community." In following with the City's policy for processing surplus property, the street lamps are available to government agencies now, but will be available to non-profit organizations beginning on Mon., May 4, and the general public beginning on Mon., May 11. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org or by contacting Bingham at (253) 591-5117.
