"There's definitely potential for the future growth of this type of entrepreneurial venture, and we felt it was time for the City to develop a program that would harness this market potential." According to City staff, the location chosen for the launch of the pilot food truck program is expected to have minimal impact on downtown parking and on most restaurants, and draw more foot traffic to the area. Two local residents have applied to serve on the City of Tacoma's Events and Recognitions Committee. The nine-member volunteer committee consists of Tacoma residents, with representatives from each of Tacoma's five Council Districts, who bring a range of perspectives and expertise that focus on the City's commitment to celebrate civic engagement and special observations. The panel oversees City-hosted events and celebrations — such as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and the City of Destiny Awards — by planning, reviewing, and evaluating events; engaging the community in its fund-raising efforts; and soliciting corporate and private sponsorships to leverage funds for these events. The committee consists of Tacoma residents recommended by Tacoma City Council's Economic Development Committee and appointed by Tacoma City Council. Tacoma City Council's Economic Development Committee is scheduled to interview Emily Alm and Jackie Casella during a public meeting at 10 a.m. on Tues., April 28, at Tacoma City Hall, located at 747 Market St., Conference Room 248, in downtown Tacoma. Following the interviews, the committee is expected to forward its recommendations for appointments to the full council. Copies of the agenda and staff memo are available online at cityoftacoma.org.
