75 trees to be planted along I-5 in Tacoma Posted online Tues., April 7 Photo Courtesy City of Tacoma More than six-dozen trees are being planted this month along a stretch of Interstate 5 in Tacoma, City of Tacoma officials announced Tuesday. The project is part of the City's Urban Forest program, which aims to manage, protect, and expand Tacoma's tree canopy. The effort is a partnership between the City of Tacoma, Washington Conservation Corps, and the Washington State Department of Transportation. In total, 75 trees will be planted along the freeway near the South 84th Street overpass. The species of trees used were selected for their drought and disease tolerance, as well as their resistance to the effects of urban pollution, according to City officials. "As the saying goes, 'The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now,'" said Deputy Mayor David Boe, who participated in planting the trees. "I really look forward to watching this grove of oaks mature and create a defined visual gateway into Tacoma along Inter-
state 5." More information about the City of Tacoma's Urban Forest program is available online at cityoftacoma.org.
