Suspect arrested in home invasion New network BY DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com
A convicted felon from Spokane County was arrested Tuesday for a brutal homeinvasion robbery in January that sent an elderly Renton couple to Harborview Medical Center with extensive injuries. The break in the case came when evidence collected by a Washington State Patrol Crime Scene Response Team led Renton Police detectives to the 49-year-old suspect from Spokane. Detectives interviewed and arrested the
suspect on Tuesday; he was booked into the Spokane County Jail pending transfer to King County. Renton Police officers responded the evening of Jan. 24 to a 911 call from a home in the 4100 block of Wells Avenue North in Kennydale. They discovered that the elderly couple who lived there had been brutally beaten during the home-invasion robbery, according to a Renton Police Department news release. The suspect had forced his way in through the couple’s back door.
A K9 track and extensive search by patrol officers did not locate the suspect. The 86-year-old husband and his 74-yearold wife suffered extensive injuries, including a skull fracture and serious blunt force trauma. Both survived after extended hospitalization, and continue to recover, according to police. In the news release the Renton Police Department thanked concerned citizens who provided information in this case, as well as the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab and other law-enforcement agencies who assisted.

BY DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com
Approval of a new emergency radio network on April 28 will mean about 630 new radios for Renton’s first responders and more reliable communications. Voters are now considering increasing property taxes by 7 cents per $1,000 of assessed value to pay for the new network, estimated to cost about $240 million. That works out to about $2 a month for an average-priced home in King County. The Renton City Council heard a briefing Monday on the network from Marlin Blizinsky with the Public Safety Emergency Radio Network replacement project. The network includes the radios used by emergency personnel and other government agencies, such as schools and public works, and the communications systems used in the dispatch centers, including the regional dispatch center, Valley Communications in Kent. Another group, the Sanctuary for All Needing Equality and Respect (SANER), has also been reevaluating its safety guidelines. SANER members, who are predominantly homeless, meet during REACH’s
Warm-up Breakfast program and have been involved in this recent effort, since someone known to the group was banned recently from the Salvation Army’s meal program for being involved in a fight. The Renton Reporter reported last week [ more MEALS page 4 ]
