Club raising funds to rebuild range BAINBRIDGE - The Bainbridge Island Sportsmen’s Club 100yard rifle range has been closed for the last 10 years, leaving islanders no secure place to safely enjoy shooting sports. Now, a new fundraising endeavor is underway to refurbish and reopen the range as a state-of-the-art facility. The Sportsmen’s Club is seeking $25,000 to complete the project and has already received more than $1,000 through the online fundraising site www.indiegogo.com. According to the fundraiser description, “The Bainbridge Island Sportsmen’s Club was founded In 1929 by a group of outdoor sports-minded individuals. “In 2003 the unthinkable happened,” the story continues. “A bullet left our pistol range. No one was injured but the club responded by closing both the pistol range and our rifle range. As a result we lost about 1/3 or more of our membership.” Since then, the club has made dramatic improvements to its facilities. Officials said the top priority was rebuilding and reopening the pistol range, done with a state grant, and the construction of an archery, also grant-funded, followed. Now, the club has turned its attention to the

return of the rifle range. Again the organization has received a grant for part of the project, and some club savings have been added to the effort. The club is now seeking public assistance for the remaining needed funds. Garfield falls after never-ending first BAINBRIDGE - The Bainbridge Spartans pounded the Bulldogs with an 11-run first inning and finished off Garfield 15-0 in four innings in varsity girls fastpitch earlier this week at home. The Spartans sent 17 batters to the plate in the opening inning. The Bulldogs were rattled right away as Riley Gregoire walked, then stole second as Natalya Niehaus grounded to third and the throw to second arrived after Riley was on base. Natalie Allen then walked, and Megan Spray grounded to short, but the throw to home plate was too late to get Riley. Deahna King then grounded out but another Spartan run crossed the plate. Kate Kinney went to first after getting hit by a pitch, and Maddie Loverich was walked as Bainbridge scored again. Emma Lindsay then banged a triple to right center to drive in three run. Unfortunately for Garfield, the inning wasn’t over yet. Lauren Vchulek lined out to the short stop, and Riley again went to first on a walk. With Niehaus again at

the plate, the Spartans looked to end the Bulldogs’ first inning misery with a sacrifice to end the inning but the Garfield third baseman misplayed the ball and Niehaus made it to first on the error. Allen smacked a double to score two more runs, and Spray sent a fly ball to right field that was dropped by the right fielder and two more runs crossed the plate. King bunted for a single, then Kinney, did, as well, only to make it to base via a throwing error by the pitcher. Loverich was sent to first on a walk and Bainbridge scored once more before a force-out at the plate on the next batter finally ended the Spartan onslaught. Bainbridge would tack on two more runs in the second and third to seal the scoring. King picked up her second win after three innings on the mound to improve to 2-2. She also recorded five strikeouts. Lindsay finished with 1-for-1 batting with a triple and three RBIs. Allen went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and King was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Bainbridge moved to 2-2 (2-0 Metro League) with the victory.
