HERE COMES THE SUN (DIAL)
Long-awaited project nearing completion at Battle Point Park BY SERAINE PAGE
Bainbridge Island Review
Washington state may have more sundials than it does sunny days. As of right now, there’s 50. One more is on the way. Soon, Bainbridge Island will be added to the spots where a lost traveler may seek out one of the ancient time-telling masterpieces. Even slower than watching the movement of the sun has been the fundraising process for the association in charge of bringing in the sundial. For more than five years, the Battle Point Seraine Page | Bainbridge Island Review
Sprite, a Bichon Frise, is in the final stages of a creative groom for an upcoming Tacoma dog grooming show. He will be featured as a Chinese Dragon. Tasha Smith, an employee of The Fluffy Ruff Dog Spa, is perfecting Sprite’s groom that she’s been working on since November.
Astronomical Association slowly raised $30,000 for the equatorial sundial. The new sundial will be placed in Battle Point Park sometime in the upcoming weeks, according to association members. It is made of steel and is coated with a bronze-colored paint. “It’s going to be really impressive looking,” said Frank Petrie, sundial project manager. “It’s going to be visible from virtually everywhere in the park. Groomer Tasha Smith works on Charlie, a Yorkipoo at The Fluffy Ruff Dog Spa on Bainbridge Island. Smith is one of the spa’s employees who recently brought home a first-place award from Groom Expo West, a national grooming competition. now and then, she’s more excited to watch her young employees grow and experience the joys of placing, she said. “It’s wonderful to see
the enthusiasm that I felt, too,” Rust said. “Grooming does not require continuing education. It’s not required, but it’s important to me, and that’s why I like seeing it is
important to them, too.” Groomers Tasha Smith and Julia Sklar won three awards in Pasadena. Smith received first place in the Sporting Division, and Sklar secured first place in Intermediate All Other Purebreds and First Place in Rescue Roundup. In two weeks, the trio will do it again in Tacoma. “It takes a lot of work to get ready for competition. You have to prepare for months and months … I am still looking for the magic shears that I wave over the dog that makes the hair fall off,” Rust joked. For the upcoming show, Smith in particular hopes to win in the creative category, where she will show her artistic skills of shaping and TURN TO RUFF | A22
