After more than a year of various road closures, Cleveland Street in downtown Redmond has reopened to traffic. Since January of 2014, the street has been under construction as part of the city’s efforts to turn the neighborhood into an urban center. Cleveland Street —

between 161st and 164th avenues northeast — is Redmond’s new main street and was designed to encourage its use for 18-hour days. “We’re trying to make it like a living room for the people who live there,” said Lisa Singer from the city’s Public Works Department and project manager for the Cleveland Streetscape. Overlake student’s family experience leads to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

Cassie Moore was in eighth grade when her mother Lori Moore began getting forgetful. Lori would forget to pick Cassie up from school, she would forget to bring home dinner and would often misplace her keys. These little moments began happening more and more frequently, but Cassie did not realize how forgetful her mother had become until she got her driver’s license. Once The Overlake School senior began driving and organizing her life herself, she saw how much was really slipping away from her mother. Cassie, a Bellevue resident, said at the time, she felt bad about what was happening to her mother and didn’t

want to point out her mistakes. But then Lori and her boyfriend at the time went on vacation and when they returned, he told Cassie — a sophomore at the time — that he couldn’t be Lori’s caregiver. After this, Lori went to see a doctor and in February 2013, she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. “It wasn’t super difficult,” Cassie said about learning of her mother’s diagnosis. Cassie — the youngest of three daughters and the only still living at home at the time — explained that they had already realized what was happening to her mother. She said it was more difficult for her mother to admit what was [ more STUDENT page 6 ]

This past weekend marked the beginning of spring and while the Pacific Northwest welcomed the new season gray skies and scattered show-

ers, there was a rainbow at Redmond City Hall. The campus played host to the third annual Festival of Color. The event was organized by the Vedic Cultural Center (VCC) of Sammamish and is

to celebrate Holi, which is primarily observed in India and Nepal and was originally a religious Hindu festival but has expanded to include nonHindus. [ more COLOR page 2 ]

Several citizens chased a strong-arm robbery suspect and a Redmond police K-9 unit tracked the man, but couldn’t locate him on Tuesday. Officers responded to the scene at 4:21 p.m. in the 15900 block of Redmond Way, according to the Redmond Police Department. The report states that a female victim was loading groceries into her vehicle when she was approached from behind by the suspect, who grabbed her purse — which the victim was wearing — by the shoulder straps. A struggle ensued and the suspect was able to rip the purse away from the victim. While the victim yelled for help, the citizens pursued the suspect, who fled across Redmond Way. The suspect was described as an Asian male in his 20s, 5-foot-8, thick build and wearing a blue cap with ear flaps, khaki jacket and blue jeans.
