Local resident could join Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission

Posted online Mon., March 23 One local resident could soon be appointed to the City of Tacoma's Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 11-member commission oversees the establishment and regulation of landmarks, local historic districts, proposed name changes for public facilities, and certain property tax incentives, according to the City's Web site. Commission members are appointed by Tacoma City Council; serve three-year terms; and typically include three architects, four individuals with professional expertise in preservationrelated fields, one representative from the Tacoma Arts Commission, and three interested citizens. Non-voting ex-officio members may be appointed to represent property and business owners within Tacoma's historic districts. The Landmarks Preservation Commission typically meets at Tacoma City Hall at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

In February, the City issued a call for applicants to fill a volunteer At-Large position on the commission (see "City seeks applicants for Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission," Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 6, 2015). The deadline for applications expired on Fri., Feb. 13. Tacoma City Council's Neighborhoods and Housing Committee interviewed candidates during a public meeting earlier this month (see "2 candidates apply to serve on Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission," Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 24, 2015). The committee then forwarded its recommendation for appointment to the full council for final confirmation. Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution to appoint Lauren Flemister to an At-Large position to serve a term to expire on Dec. 31, 2017, during a public meeting at 5 p.m. on Tues., March 24, at Tacoma City Hall. Copies of the resolution and staff memo are available online at tacomadailyindex.com.

Pierce County: Stormwater project will close 72nd Street East section Pierce County officials announced Monday 72nd Street East between Canyon Road East and 66th Avenue East will be closed from 7 a.m. on Sat., March 28 to 7 p.m. on Sun., March 29 while crews install pipes under the road for a new stormwater filter vault. The vault will remove contaminants from stormwater runoff before it enters Rody Creek. The closure will not impact local residents getting to and from their homes. Drivers will be detoured onto Canyon Road East and Pioneer Way East during the closure. Lane restrictions that began on Mon., March 9, on this half-mile section of 72nd Street East

will continue after the closure until Sun., April 15. The roadway will be reduced from four lanes to two between 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Three lanes will be open during non-work hours. Motorists should expect minor delays. Stormwater is rain that runs off of hard surfaces such as roads into a system of pipes, ditches and ponds. Along the way, stormwater picks up pollution from vehicle leaks, animal waste, fertilizers and other toxic chemicals. Most stormwater eventually flows into local streams, lakes, rivers and Puget Sound. The total project construction cost is approximately $425,000, with the Washington State De-

partment of Ecology funding $318,715 of the effort. The rest — $106,250 — is funded by Pierce County surface water management fees. Hoffman Construction Inc. is the contractor.
