those found in other U.S. cities. The one notable black mark on opinions of the community were directed toward traffic flow. “I’m not surprised by any of this info,” city councillor Joshua Schaer said. Schaer said he was particularly unsurprised by dissatisfaction with local traffic and hoped the low score would warrant immediate response from the city. He likened the situation to the regular citizen polls in the popular computer game “SimCity.” “Boy, when that percentage number got low that was the time to start fixing that area of your city,” he said.

In an unconventional move, county staff will produce a 95 percent design plan for the southern segment of the East Lake Sammamish Trail as a good-faith effort to show Sammamish residents their comments will influence the county’s plans. “We know there’s a long road in front of us,” County Parks Director Kevin Brown said during the Sammamish City Council meeting Tuesday. It was standing room only at the meeting, as at least 90 people packed into city hall eager to hear Brown’s updated tail presentation. More than 20 attendees, several from neighboring city’s, spoke about the trail during public comment. Community uproar ensued after the county released the 90 percent design plans for the southern portion of the trail in February. These design plans were released without considering city comments, which addressed issues concerning tree removal and the width of the trail. “There was a mistake by the county’s design team,” Sammamish Public Works Director Laura Philpot at the Tuesday council meeting. Philpot and Brown had met Feb. 20 and negotiated, point-by-point, segment A, which stretches from 43rd Way Southeast to Southeast 33rd Street. They came to a resolution on the majority of the concerns, like filling in a ditch to widen the trail instead of chopping down trees. “You’ve recognized there are ditches on the east side and that’s a big move

Survey: Good news for city —Issaquah residents happy BY DANIEL NASH ISSAQUAH/SAMMAMISH REPORTER

Issaquah citizens are happy, but they may also be more isolated than the average American. A National Citizen Survey conducted by the National Research Center in December in cooperation with nearly 300 Issaquah households found that those surveyed were highly satisfied with their quality of life. Ninety-one percent of respondents rated their quality of life as “good” or “excellent,” with the remaining 9 percent rating their experience as “fair.” Opinions of nearly all factors — including safety, mobility, the economy and education, among oth-

ers — were similar to national benchmarks, with respondents’ opinions of their natural environment exceeding national averages. In their line of questioning, surveyors broke down each category into specific questions, taking note of the percentage of satisfied respondents and how those satisfaction rates compare to other U.S. cities where the survey’s been conducted. “This is a very in-tune statistic for communities,” Deputy City Administrator Emily Moon said. So while only a third of respondents were satisfied with factors like Issaquah’s cost of living or quality of life, those satisfaction rates were similar to
