Voters to make the call on radio system upgrade King County measure to be on April ballot

The Metropolitan King County Council on Monday approved sending to the voters on April 28 a nine-year, $273 million property tax levy lid lift proposal to raise
revenue needed to replace the County’s aging emergency radio system. Police, fire and emergency responders of all kinds in jurisdictions throughout the county rely on the radio system to do their jobs,
to communicate during emergency incidents and natural disasters like earthquakes, flooding, landslides and wind storms. But the system on which all these entities and personnel lean is 20 years old, and [ more SYSTEM page 8 ]

Shawn Murphy was an angry, cynical man searching for peace. For most of his life, he had distrusted people and hated the world. “I saw the world as a negative place. Everybody was evil, everything was out to get me,” said the 48-year-old Auburn man and

Army veteran. “All my problems were caused by someone else. I had a poor attitude. … I couldn’t stand myself anymore.” Murphy struggled to make the transition from military police duty to active civilian life 25 years ago. He had trouble making friends and keeping jobs.
Auburn’s Shawn Murphy and other veterans last summer hiked the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail, which crossed the Lewis and Clark Pass, elevation 6,424 feet, between Helena and Browning, Mont.
