some day follow in his dad’s footsteps was the furthest thing from his mind. Now, the father-and-son team work together and share the same passion for giving back to their Oak Harbor community, particularly during one special day of the year. The Wezemans’ practice, Whidbey Avenue Dental Care, is offering free dental care to the public on Friday, Feb. 13, as part of the business’ 10th annual Dentist with a Heart Day. Whidbey General Hospital’s board of commissioners hired a new CEO Monday to replace Tom Tomasino this spring. Geri Forbes, one of the three candidates interviewed during an inviteonly luncheon with community representatives, will take over as Whidbey General’s CEO position in mid-April. Forbes touted the importance of transparency and openness during the community meeting last month. Tomasino, who served as CEO of the hospital for more than five years, FORBES turned in his resignation notice last year, effective in October 2015. Rather than stay on board to work with Forbes as originally discussed by the hospital board, Tomasino will be exiting the hospital before Forbes takes over. The hospital spokesperson didn’t respond by press time to a request for the terms of Tomasino’s earlier-than-expected separation from Whidbey General. TOMASINO Tomasino was receiving $261,000 per year in salary and benefits, according to the most recent information available from the state Department of Health.

Jailhouse calls lead to revoked bail By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

Photo by Jessie Stensland / Whidbey News-Times

Kevin Brown speaks with his attorney in court Monday.

A South Whidbey man accused of stabbing another man in the leg during a robbery Jan. 1 managed to get himself into more trouble while in jail, according to the Island County Prosecutor’s Office. Kevin Brown, 37, appeared in Island County Superior Court Monday afternoon.

Deputy Prosecutor Chris Anderson asked the judge to revoke Brown’s bail because he had attempted to make third-party contact with the victim and witnesses, a violation of court orders. Brown called friends from the jail and asked them to contact the victim and witnesses for him, according to Anderson. Brown’s attorney didn’t

dispute the recommendation. Judge Vickie Churchill agreed and revoked Brown’s bail, which means he’ll remain in jail until the case is resolved. In addition, Anderson amended the charges against Brown to assault in the second degree, robbery in the first degree and tampering with a witness. According to court records, Brown was at the victim’s house with other people, including his girlfriend, on the night of the attack. Brown followed the victim into the bedroom. He allegedly struck the 42-year-old man over the head with a large glass lamp, knocking him down, according to Detective Ed Wallace with the Island County Sheriff’s Office. Brown told the victim to

give him “everything you got” and pulled out a large knife; the man threw his wallet at Brown, the sheriff’s office reported. When Brown bent to pick up the wallet, the resident kicked at him and Brown stabbed him in the leg. Brown and his girlfriend then fled, according to Wallace. Deputies tracked the pair to a travel trailer parked beside a Delphi Street house. The girlfriend exited the trailer, but Brown refused repeated commands to come out. A search warrant was obtained and members of the Island County Sheriff’s Office warrant service team entered the trailer and located Brown hiding under a pile of blankets between the mattress and the wall, the sheriff’s office reported.

At 11:21 a.m., a Hamilton Drive resident reported that someone may be poisoning animals in his neighborhood. At 11:59 a.m., a Highway 525 resident reported that the goat was still in his yard. At 5:07 p.m., a caller reported that a man in camo was carrying a rifle on Sills Road.

SATURDAY, JAN. 24 8:30 a.m., a West Beach Road resident reported that someone had smashed in the back door of the house. At 9:29 a.m., a Solar Way resident reported that someone spray-painted the yard.

At 2:13 p.m., there was a report that a man fell out of a kayak and was yelling for help near the Oak Harbor Marina.

SUNDAY, JAN. 25 At 12:45 a.m., a man on Longhouse Lane reported that a woman came at him with a handsaw, he picked up a baseball bat and the woman went back inside. At 12:19 p.m., a caller reported that a woman ran in front of her car on Scenic Avenue and flipped her off. The woman was “screaming into the air” and carrying luggage. At 8:37 p.m., a caller reported that he was at Fort Ebey State Park earlier and people were making “tapping gestures” toward him. He said they think he is someone who he is not. He called back the next day and said that it was a flash mob targeting gays.

Prosecutor swears he didn’t steal purse Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks claims he did not steal money from a dead woman’s purse, contrary to what a regional TV news station reported. “I categorically deny it,” he said. Colleagues in Banks’ office have been ribbing him since a story on the KIRO website inadvertently mixed up the prosecutor and the defendant in a story about Doug Saar, a former Oak Harbor attorney who was sentenced to prison last Friday for stealing from clients. During the hearing, Banks said that Saar stole from a dead woman’s purse. KIRO, however, reported that “Banks even stole money from a dead client’s purse.” The KIRO story also said that Banks stole from a family’s trust after the father died; Saar was actually convicted of that crime. Banks said he asked KIRO to correct the story. “Someday I’ll try to get another job and they’ll do a Google search and find this,” he said jokingly. The KIRO story now has an editor’s note stating that “Greg Banks is the prosecutor and Doug Saar is the defendant.”

Dike Road to close this summer By JANIS REID Staff reporter

Dike Road west of Dugualla Bay will be closed for several months this year for improvements that include restoring salmon habitat. The main changes will help protect State Highway 20 from future flooding risk and raise and widen Dike Road to function as a dike setback. It will also recreate what was historically an important feeding area for juvenile salmon. “The Dugualla Bay site has been recognized by numerous state agencies as one of the top salmon restoration priorities in the state,” said to Ryan Elting, conservation director for the Whidbey Camano Land Trust. Previous improvements to the area has “greatly limited” salmon’s ability to use the area, Elting said, and the Dike Road project will be “restoring the estuary habitat” in Dugualla Bay. Elting said the Land Trust acquired three properties in the area several years ago and have been managing them as a preserve since that time. The construction will be completed in partnership with the Washington

State Department of Transportation, which has temporarily acquired Dike Road and will give it back to Island County for ongoing maintenance. The construction project is expected to go out to bid in March with a road closure from June through October. Currently designated as a local access road, the updated roadway will be raised and expanded to have 11-foot lanes and 5.5-foot shoulders, and changes will be made to the county’s storm water treatment pond access on the west side. This project will also remove portions of an existing dike located further out in order to reconnect the area to the tides, restoring the wetland nature of the property. According to 2010 traffic counts from Island County, an average of 883 vehicles use Dike Road each day, according to county documents. The closure of Dike Road, while temporary, could potentially cause further inconvenience if an accident occurs on nearby Highway 20, according to Public Works Director Bill Oakes. Dike Road has been used as an alternate route in the case of a full blockage of the highway.

An SUV drives south on Dike Road on the portion that will be raised this summer in a project that will also restore salmon habitat. “A totally blocking accident will be totally blocking there for those four months,” Oakes said. Oakes also explained to Island County commissioners last week during work session that the existing soils under Dike Road are highly compressible and settlement periods can normally take up to two years. In order to reduce the

required settlement period to four months, WSDOT will install wick drains to speed up the removal of the groundwater under the roadway, Oakes said. Other project elements include clearing and grubbing, grading, drainage, signing, illumination, planting, plant establishment and weed control, according to county documents.

None of Whidbey Island’s three RadioShack stores are closing despite news this week that RadioShack Corp. filed for bankruptcy and is shuttering more than 1,700 stores nationwide. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 5 and announced a wave of stores to potentially be closed. RadioShack’s stores in Oak Harbor, Freeland and Clinton are included in a document titled “Potential store closure list” on the radioshackcorporation.com website. The Freeland and Clinton stores are independently owned and operated. The Oak Harbor store, however, is owned and operated by corporate, said the manager, David Davenport. “We are locally-owned as always,” said Mike Rains, owner of the South Whidbey stores. “People always forget we’re not a corporation.” According to an Oak Harbor RadioShack employee who identified himself as Rick, that store’s staff was not told of any changes. “They haven’t informed us,” he said Monday afternoon.

DENTISTS CONTINUED FROM A1

Wezeman and a staff of about 15 are donating their services to the community free of charge. The team will perform tooth extractions, provide fillings and offer emergency treatments to anyone who shows up and is willing to wait. The dentistry is located at 926 E. Whidbey Avenue in Oak Harbor. “Anyone is welcome,” said Cara Wezeman, Luke’s wife. “We do have kids who come, but the majority are adults.” Tim Wezeman, who founded the practice in 1979, started the tradition to help those in need in 2005. When his son joined the practice, and eventually bought it from him in 2009, they decided to continue to hold a day to help community members who needed care but couldn’t afford it. Tim Wezeman said he got the idea from a class he took and the staff embraced the concept. “It was kind of an inspirational class where they were trying to give doctors ideas how to return things to their community,” he said. “We decided to do ‘Dentist with a Heart Day.’ The staff was all over it and of course you can’t do it unless they volunteer their time. “It’s a way to give back to your community and there’s a lot of people out there who really are in need and you’d hope that with some of those people some of their needs are taken care of. That’s kind of the concept. And Luke took it and ran with it.” Through nine years, the dentistry has provided free care to 561 patients during Dentist with a Heart Day, averaging about 62 a year. Along the way, there was discussion on

whether to discontinue the service. However, the benefit to the community proved too invaluable. “We talked about it and decided, you know what, we have a gift to give,” Luke Wezeman said. “We really feel a great pleasure in being able to share that gift with people.” Beyond that, the hope is that it will inspire others to help those in need, Cara Wezeman said. “One of the reasons we continue on, my husband and I both are really passionate about the need for each person to assess their resources and the skills available to them in relation to the needs of the community they live in,” she said. “It’s not just for us to do that. It’s a much bigger picture. In terms of the bigger community, there’s a call for all of us.” The dentistry’s longtime staff is equally dedicated, Cara Wezeman said. Most have participated in all nine of the previous events. The day of free care also includes teeth cleaning but that is the only service that required appointments and all 18 of those slots have been filled. “It really wouldn’t happen without everybody,” Luke Wezeman said. There was a time when Luke Wezeman couldn’t have imagined it would happen for him at all, especially while growing up in Oak Harbor “My dad never really talked a whole lot about dentistry and probably because I wasn’t really interested in it,” he said. Luke Wezeman was in his fifth year as a Coupeville Middle School science teacher when he decided to make a bold career move and shift to dentistry. To do so, he, his wife and their two young children moved from a house in Coupeville to an apartment in Manhattan so he could attend dentistry school at New York University. “I think the biggest thing is I gave up the security,” Luke Wezeman said. “When you were teaching, there was an income and all

Forbes served on the Big Bend Rural Health board and the North Florida Area Agency on Aging board, as well as the Advisory Board of the North Florida Workforce Development, according to the press release. “I think her accomplishments speak for herself,” said Anne Tarrant, president of board of directors for Whidbey General Hospital. The contract being offered to Forbes is not yet finalized, and won’t be until the March board meeting, Tarrant said Monday. Tarrant refused to discuss details of how the board reached its decision or share specifics of Forbes’ contract. She also wouldn’t say whether the contract was presented to Forbes for consideration. Tarrant said she considered it “inappropriate” for a

We gave that up. We sold a bunch of stuff. We sold cars. We sold a house we just had built. Everything. We put a little bit of stuff in storage. That was hard as the provider. It was like, you know I’m giving all this stuff away and gambling on my ability to go to school and be successful.” “That was really hard.” And the transition from Coupeville to Manhattan? “All I knew about going to New York was what I’d seen on NYPD Blue,” he said. Wezeman, 41, and his family ultimately returned home to Oak Harbor. He, his wife and his dad are all Oak Harbor High School graduates. Tim Wezeman’s dad, Leonard, was a pastor at First Reformed Church in Oak Harbor. “I’m happy he found a home and a career that he enjoys and likes to do,” Tim Wezeman said. “It’s not work if you love what you do and become good at what you do. It’s an avoca-

tion. It’s something fun to do. I’m happy that he decided to come here. It’s fun together.” Luke Wezeman owns the practice now. His dad works there part-time. “I work for him now. He’s my boss,” Tim Wezeman said with a smile. “I guess he can fire me if he wanted to. “I’m happy to come in whenever he needs me. It works out well.” Father and son and the entire staff will be needed Friday, along with other volunteers. “They both grew up here and have a really strong tie to this community,” Cara Wezeman said. “Both of them care a lot about this place and a lot about the people. For both of them, the people who walk through the door are truly our neighbors. That’s the kind of community we live in. I love that about our community. “I would say Dr. Tim and Dr. Luke both feel very strongly about a sense of community and a place of home.”

They also found a wallet containing Lura’s driver’s license along with the driver’s licenses for five other people, debit and credit cards belonging to five different people and checks from three different people, the report said. Lura was also a suspect in a burglary at a Devries Road home on the same night and not far from where Lura was seen allegedly prowling mailboxes, the report indicates. The homeowner was out of the country, but a neighbor noticed that someone had broken into the house.

Lura allegedly left a distinctive shoe print behind. Another neighbor saw a vehicle parked in the driveway the day before and asked the driver what he was doing. The neighbor took a photo of the vehicle’s license plate, which turned out to be Lura’s, a deputy’s report states. If convicted of the charges against him, Lura could face up to seven years in prison under the standard sentencing range. do this ‘because …,’ so that there’s understanding,” Forbes said. “It’s all about communication.” Forbes did not return a call for comment by press time Tuesday. If the contract is finalized, Tarrant said the hospital board hopes that Forbes will start in the position on April 20.

IN OUR OPINION

New hospital CEO must put action behind promises Whidbey General Hospital has a new CEO-apparent, one who has talked about the importance of openness

and transparency. We like the talk, but we hope to see the action behind the words. Geri Forbes will step into the lead role at the public hospital in April, if the Whidbey General board of directors has its way. Forbes is currently the CEO of Doctor’s Memorial Hospital in Perry, Fla. She chaired the Rural Health Council, was involved in the Florida Rural Health Association and chaired the Government Affairs Committee for the Florida Regional Hospital Association. Meanwhile, the hospital board’s president, Anne Tarrant, scolded a reporter this week for being audacious enough to ask about the details of Forbes’ hiring and her proposed contract. Considering the hospital CEO has quite possibly been the highest-paid public employee on Whidbey Island, if not Island County, questions about details of the contract seem quite reasonable. The hospital is also unresponsive to questions about the specifics of Tomasino’s departure — his resignation was to become effective in October 2015. Will he be receiving pay through that date? Is there a severance deal for Tomasino? We don’t know. The hospital doesn’t want to talk about it. “Transparency means to me to keep people informed, within the limits of what you can keep them informed on. It’s letting them know where the organization is going, speaking plainly about your issues and concerns,” Forbes said during the hospital’s interview luncheon on Jan. 16. Sometimes the level of transparency a hospital has is hampered by patient confidentiality laws, she added. We take that to mean any medical information cannot be disclosed. A public employee’s contract doesn’t fall under that umbrella. That’s because Whidbey General Hospital’s CEO works for you, the taxpayers. As the employer, there is every expectation of transparency, not just talk. We are looking forward to having a hospital administration serious about transparency and openness. That change couldn’t come soon enough.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Whidbey General

Hospital’s cesarean rate quite alarming Editor, I am greatly concerned about the cesarean rates at Whidbey General Hospital. A report from the state Department of Health for 2013 shows that, out of 54 hospitals in Washington, Whidbey General has a 41.8 percent cesarean rate for first-time mothers. This rate is alarming. It means that almost every other first-time mother who delivers a baby at Whidbey General will have a cesarean section. In addition to the highest cesarean section rate in all of Washington, vaginal birth after cesarean is unavailable at the hospital. Mothers who are not allowed a VBAC must have a repeat major abdominal surgery and the risks associated with it. There has to be a better way to serve island families and improve the lives of women and children during pregnancy and birth. What exactly is going on at Whidbey General, and what they are going to do

to improve their standard of care for mothers and babies? Lara Ortiz Clinton

Editorial

Vaccinating children is best for society Editor, I am writing in support your editorial about vaccination. My parents were alternative health zealots going back in the early days of the 20th century. Some of what they believed makes sense today. For example, as a child on a hobby farm not far from Disneyland in California, I helped grow organic vegetables and collect organic eggs from free-run chickens. Some of what they believed was dubious. I milked a cow while in junior high and drank raw milk. Some of what they believed was probably very dangerous. At the height of the polio epidemic my siblings and I were not vaccinated. Why did we not get polio? Probably herd immunity. I understand the reluctance to let children be vaccinated. We live in a

community. We want complete freedom to do as we please, but our actions have consequences for others. Sometimes we must evaluate conflicting arguments, and sometimes society must require people to obey laws they dislike, for the safety of others. Stephen Khan Langley

Felled oak

Erect figures of council, mayor in dead of night Editor, I have a much better idea for use of the felled Garry oak tree than the ones noted in the Saturday edition of the Whidbey News-Times. My idea is more apt to capture the true spirit of our Oak Harbor leaders. On the stump of the tree should be a sign stating “RIP 2014.” Around the tree should be wood figurines carved in the likeness of Mayor Dudley and the Oak Harbor City Council — all holding axes. And to add irony to the situation, those figurines should be placed in the dead of night. Thomas Kosloske Oak Harbor

LOOKING BACK: 125 YEARS

City begins talks of incorporation Here’s what was happening in the news:

n The Washington Clothing Co. of Everett rented the Rogers Building and was busy opening up a large and varied stock of ladies’ and gents’ clothing and furnishing goods. n Oak Harbor Commercial Club held a meeting, at which there was a fair representation of members present. It was the unanimous sentiment of those present that the time had come when regular meetings should be held and urgent measures taken to revive interest in the club. The first matter taken up was the urgent need of a crosswalk from the Zylstra meat market across to the Smith barber shop. The question of incorporation of Oak Harbor came up for discussion, and there was a unanimous sentiment expressed in its favor. It was decided that the Commercial Club take up the matter of a ferry from some point above Oak Harbor across to Utsalady.

n Six carloads, or 230 tons, of superphosphate, enough to fertilize approximately 3,000 acres, arrived for Island County farmers participating in the soil conservation program. n Talks with turkey men from other sections of the state indicated that Whidby Island would again furnish the largest proportion of early birds for the Washington Co-Op. In 1939, Whidby Island furnished approximately 90 percent of the early turkeys. n J.B. Riepma’s herd of 24 registered and grade Guernsy cows averaging 597 milk and 30.9 butterfat, led seven Island County herds on the Standard Plan tests for the month of January.

n A Volkswagen driven by a boy who had just gotten his license a few days previously went out of control on the Flintstone Freeway, left the road, rolled down the bank and ended its journey in the water in back of the road. The current from the water carried the car into the middle of the small lagoon. The boy escaped the accident uninjured but a little scared and wet. A small boat was needed to put the town chain on the car so it could be pulled form the water. n Negotiations for sale of the Whidbey Press Publishing Co. to John Webber and Wally Funk were announced. Pending completion of transactions, March 1, was set as the official date of the sale. n A call from Washington, D.C., to the Whidbey Press brought good news to members of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Brian Corcoran, press secretary for Senator Henry M. Jackson, was calling to announce that the Department of Defense was requesting $3.7 million for new construction at NAS Whidbey. The work in the bill included a radio receiver facility, an aircraft maintenance shop, a survival equipment shop, barracks and an aircraft systems training building. These new facilities would be constructed to prepare Whidbey for the new A6A Intruder airplane. n Three men, pilot Cdr. Frederic Walton Smith, Bombardernavigator Ltjg. John Allen Ebers and Petty Officer third class Jack Everett Gardner, died when the A3B Skywarrior jet they were in crashed 140 miles east of Portland. The accident was termed an “uncontrollable crash.” The plane, flying alone, was on a routine, low-level bombing mission.

n The Oak Harbor School District’s proposed $2 millionper-year school levy was firmly rejected by the voters, but Coupeville’s levy proposal glided to easy approval. n Island County Sheriff A.J. “Bud” Graves announced plans to run for a second term of office despite some embarrassing financial problems. Graves and his wife filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. n For the third week in a row, strong winds took their toll on Whidbey Island, toppling trees and knocking out power to every home on the island. The blackout was caused by the wind, which reached upward of 61 mph, and by trees falling on power lines. n Coupeville Foursquare Church members planted 250 young Douglas fir trees near the Island County landfill to act as visual screen between State Highway 20 and the landfill. n The City of Oak Harbor and Island County formalized a land trade for the new Island County District Court building to be constructed at 400 Ave. The city’s lot at 400 Ave. W. was larger than the county’s lot at 700 Ave. W. n Charles G. Southwick, a sailor at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station convicted in September 1989 of sexually assaulting two young girls was sentenced to more than six years in prison. n Looking Back is compiled from the Whidbey NewsTimes’ archives as the newspaper celebrates 125 years in business and the City of Oak Harbor its 100th anniversary of incorporation.

Conservation Futures presents no downside SOUND OFF

By STEVE ERICKSON The Conservation Futures program is funded though a tax that costs the average Island County property owner less than $15 per year. For that paltry amount, key recreation areas, working farmland and important habitat areas have been permanently protected by either outright purchase or through conservation easements restricting development. Two of the current county commissioners are apparently concerned that Conservation Futures is somehow inhibiting so-called “economic development.” It is not. There is no economic downside to the Conservation Futures program. In 1971, the state Legislature adopted, and Republican Gov. Dan Evans signed, the law establishing the Conservation Futures program. It said: “… the haphazard growth and spread of urban development is encroaching upon, or eliminating, numerous open areas and spaces of varied size and character, including many devoted to agriculture, the cultivation of timber and other productive activities, and many others having significant recreational, social, scenic or esthetic values. “Such areas and spaces, if preserved and maintained in their present open state, would constitute important assets to existing and impending urban and metropolitan development, at the same time that they would continue to contribute to the welfare and well-being of the citizens of the state as a whole. The acquisition of interests or rights in real property for the preservation of such open spaces and areas constitutes a public purpose for which public funds may properly be expended or advanced.” [RCW 84.34.200.] Since Island County’s Conservation Futures program was begun in 1991 by an all-Republican board of county commissioners, it has funded the protection of 3,031 acres, roughly split evenly between outright purchase of land and conservation easements restricting development. [Source: Island County] The land area of Island County is about 133,210 acres.

[Source: Wikipedia] Over the last 24 years, the Conservation Futures program permanently prevented or restricted development of fewer than 2.28 percent of Island County, or less than 1/10 of 1 percent per year. At this rate, it will take until 2097 to protect a mere 10 percent of the county from development. And what is the economic impact of open space in Island County? The state Recreation and Conservation Office recently commissioned a statewide study of the economic impact of recreation in Washington. It concluded that there were about 3,000 jobs in Island County dependent on recreation. After the military, tourism and recreation is the largest employment sector in the county. Those jobs are dependent on open space now and in the future — including when the huge numbers of currently undeveloped lots in the county are later developed. People don’t go to suburbia to recreate. They go to places where there are forests, prairies, beaches and farms — open space. Of course, recreation jobs are just one economic benefit from open space. There are numerous other economic and environmental services open space provides, such as groundwater recharge, storm water control, pollution removal, noise attenuation, climate amelioration and increased value of nearby private property, a very large economic value in itself. Whidbey and Camano are islands. There will always be transportation bottlenecks inhibiting development. This is the nature of islands. It doesn’t matter if you personally like or dislike this reality. It’s just the way it is. What Whidbey and Camano islands do have is green space. And that is their longterm economic and environmental capital in a region where suburban and big box sprawl have run rampant. If anything, Conservation Futures and similar programs should be drastically ramped up while it is still possible. Because when those thousands of currently undeveloped lots each have a house behind 20-foot-wide tree buffers waiting to blow down in the next big storm, there will not be 3,000 recreation jobs in Island County. And you better bring your sleeping bag with you when you get in the ferry line or try to drive across the bridge. n Steve Erickson is a member of Whidbey Environmental Action Network, a nonprofit environmental organization located on Whidbey Island.

Oak Harbor Girls The Oak Harbor girls basketball team (3-7, 4-16) finished the regular season tied with Marysville Getchell (3-7, 9-11) for fourth in the Wesco 3A North Division, and the top four teams qualify for the postseason. Oak Harbor played at Getchell last night to break the tie. If the Wildcats won, they host Shorewood (5-7, 10-10), the South Division’s fourth-place team, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in a game to determine Wesco’s final entry into the district tournament. If Oak Harbor defeats Shorewood, it will head to the eight-team, double-elimination district tournament, starting with a game at No. 1 seeded Arlington (10-0, 18-2) at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers hitting high notes in Coupeville after six years and is offering its knowledge to assist Oak Harbor

By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

There’s a common misconception about Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers. It’s often thought that involvement requires certain handyman skills or expertise in areas such as carpentry, plumbing or electrical work. Not so, says Gary Wray, member of the board of directors. “It’s not even skilled workers. It’s just people,” Wray said. “Hearts & Hammers is more about community building.” An example of this was on display last Friday at the Coupeville Recreation Hall, where about 100 people attended an informal dinner and fundraiser, showing how far the nonprofit organization has come in six years. As a jazz band played, people dined and mingled during a gathering designed to raise money and awareness for the group’s cause. Each spring, Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers organizes an all-volunteer work day where skilled hands and other laborers combine efforts to help homeowners in Central Whidbey with small projects. The nonprofit group was formed in 2009 as an off-shoot to its sister organization on South Whidbey, which was founded in 1994 and inspired movements in other states. Following the organization’s theme of “neighbors helping neighbors,” the effort is designed to help those in the community who have trouble doing the work themselves or can’t afford to pay for it. The group tackles about 20 projects each year in a single day with work ranging from painting and roof repairs to yard cleanup. The board of directors will look over about 16 applications that have come in for this year’s work day, which is May 2 and serves residents who live within the Coupeville School District. Although a posted deadline has passed, applicants may still apply. “We can always use more,” said Wilson Binger, board president. Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers is made up of 12 board members and a volunteer work force that has grown to about 120, Binger said. Home builder John Schisel and his wife Alice were among four community members who started the off-shoot in Coupeville and have watched interest, enthusiasm and participation grow. “It’s infectious,” retired plumber Bill Skubi said. Now the Central Whidbey orga-

Dinner is served at the Coupeville Recreation Hall, where about 100 people attended to eat, mingle and support the Central Whidbey nonprofit. Gary Wray, wearing Seahawks shirt, is a board member with Hearts & Hammers, which will hold its work party to help homeowners with small projects May 2. nization is interested in assisting a group from North Whidbey to get off the ground. But so far, no one from Oak Harbor has stepped forward. “We’re trying to find someone who’s interested in picking up the ball and running with it,” Wray said. “If there’s a group in Oak Harbor that would like to take ownership

of it, we’d be willing to help them,” Binger said. Wray has been involved with Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers since it started in 2009. He owns a siding company with his brother and wanted to use his skills to help others in his community. “It was the right thing to do,” he

said. Contractors and builders are the “heart and soul” of the Hearts & Hammers movement, said Skubi, who’s been involved with the effort since 1996, beginning in South Whidbey. However, the work parties include anyone who wants to help, which includes meal preparation on

the work day. n To contact Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers, call 360720-2114 or send an email to cwhearsandhammers@gmail.com For more information, go to the group’s website at www.cwheartsandhamers.com
