Lower fuel prices than expected have wound up saving Kitsap Transit $550,000 last year. And fuel prices continue to fall for the public transportation authority, which uses a fleet of buses, vanpools and ferries to carry four million riders annually in Bremerton and Port Orchard area. In January, KT paid $1.61 per gallon for diesel fuel, compared to $2.09 in December -- both months much lower than the $3.75 per gallon that KT had budgeted for. The group is able to get the lower fuel prices by buying in bulk -- 10,000 to 20,000 gallons at a time. The fuel is purchased from the state, which bids out for contract pricing. “It’s not only discounted but we’re also exempt from a lot of the taxes that are put on so the price that we pay is normally much lower than the price per gallon on the pump,” said Kitsap Transit Executive Director John Clauson. He said the savings will go into their reserve fund. Fuel for the ferries that run between Port Orchard and Bremerton, and for the vanpool, however, is purchased at or near market rates. KT burns about 728,000 gallons of fuel per year for all modes of transportation and spends around $2.3 million in fuel annually. KT tracks average diesel fuel prices each month. In 2014, prices range from a low of $2.09 in December to a high of $3.10 in June. The average fuel price for 2014 was $2.89. KT paid an average of $2.27 in 2007, $3.07 in 2008, $1.75 in 2009, $2.32 in 2010, $3.13 in 2011, $3.26 in 2012 and $3.09 in 2013. The last time KT averaged $1.61 per gallon or less was in May of 2009 when the price also averaged $1.61.

Engineers praise Bremerton landfill gas control system STAFF REPORT

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Washington has selected Landau Associates to receive a Silver Engineering Excellence Award for the design and implementation of a landfill gas control (LFG) system for the Bremerton Housing Authority Bay Vista redevelopment. The award was presented at the organization’s annual gala in Bellevue on Jan. 23 at the Westin Bellevue. The 83-acre mixed-use Bay Vista redevelopment project will include the creation of Periwinkle Park, located above the three-acre former Westpark Landfill, within the for-

mer Westpark public housing area in Bremerton. Landau Associates designed and implemented a control system to prevent landfill gas from reaching concentrations of concern or posing a migration risk to residential units adjacent to Periwinkle Park by capturing, treating, and ventilating LFG to the atmosphere. The project was recognized by the ACEC in part for its complexity. The system design is a unique hybrid application of existing technology (passive and active LFG control) with a prescriptive step-down approach for moving from active to passive ventilation. The system design is consistent with Bremerton Housing Authority’s development approach, which

BREMERTON – Harrison Medical Center acquired Advanced Medical Imaging and Olympic Radiology’s imaging centers assets, effective Jan. 1. The new organization will be named Harrison Imaging Centers. AMI will keep its name for a short period until facility upgrades to comply with state Department of Health requirements for hospital-based clinics are complete. “Our shared values and commitment to exceptional health care, will allow us to work together to better serve residents throughout the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas,” said David Schultz, president of CHI Franciscan Health Harrison Medical Center. AMI and Olympic Radiology operate five centers throughout Kitsap County, located in Port Orchard, Bremerton, Bremerton MRI (at the Harrison Bremerton campus) Silverdale, and Poulsbo. They serve patients from Kitsap, North Mason, Clallam and Jefferson counties. The same 13 radiologists that serve at the imaging centers today will continue to do so through a professional group practice called Olympic Medical Imaging Consultants. Operating

A Bremerton consignment store closed its doors in December and now 18 former vendors are looking to collect almost $7,000. The vendors claim the owner of the Picket Fence Market, Annie Gambardella of Bremerton, failed to pay them for items sold in her store. One member of the group, Jeff

Haynie of Bainbridge Island, sued Gambardella, 45, in smalls claims in October 2014 citing failure to pay money owed for furniture consignment sales. Haynie, 53, won by default because Gambardella didn’t appear in court. Gambardella said she failed to appear because the court date wasn’t on the papers given to her when she was served notice of the suit. The group has stated they are pursuing legal action.
