Goddess of Commerce
A playful nod honors longtime Tacoma booster Article and Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor The Goddess of Commerce statue in downtown Tacoma is adorned this week with flowers and scarves in honor of the late Griselda 'Babe' Lehrer, a Tacoma businesswoman, community volunteer, and philanthropist who died on Jan. 24 at the age of 93. Lehrer opened Lyon's Apparel in downtown Tacoma in 1940 and grew the business into a chain of stores located throughout the Pacific Northwest. She later served on the Board of Directors for the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts and the Tacoma Community College Foundation. In 2011, she championed an effort to locate the 700-pound, seven-foot-tall Goddess of Commerce statue near the intersections of South Sixth Avenue, St. Helens Avenue, and South Baker Street. A memorial was held last week at the Pantages Theater to honor Lehrer's lifetime contributions to Tacoma.
$127M price tag for proposed Pierce County headquarters Posted online Weds., Feb. 5 Images Courtesy Pierce County Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy announced this week the cost to build a new general services building (pictured) on the countyowned 13-acre site of the former Puget Sound Hospital campus will total $126.9 million. During a presentation to Pierce County Council on Monday, McCarthy noted the project would be paid for using existing resources, such as the money currently spent on eight commercial office leases that serve 19 departments and divisions currently housed in 14 locations throughout the county, as well as savings gained through efficiencies created by consolidating employees within the new general services building and campus. She also noted a development agreement between the County and Seattle-based developer Wright Runstad & Co. shows $103.8 million would be spent on total construction, including fixtures and furniture; $17.4 million would be spent on parking facilities; and $3.9 million would be spent on building, parking, and
tenant contingencies. Pierce County Council is expected to vote later this month on whether to approve the plan. If approved, construction would begin in March, with the building fully occupied by November 2016. More information is available online at piercecountywa.org/gsb.
