5 people appointed to Tacoma's Human Services Commission Posted online Weds., Jan. 7 By Todd Matthews, Editor Five people were appointed Tuesday to serve on the City of Tacoma's Human Services Commission. The 15-member panel conducts public hearings, accepts and reviews proposals, selects projects, and makes recommendations to Tacoma City Council. The commission also serves as a resource for implementation of the City of Tacoma's Human Services Strategic Plan. Membership aims to reflect community diversity as it relates to race, culture, gender, age, socioeconomics, and geography. The commission meets at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Tacoma City Council's Public Safety, Human Services, and Education Committee interviewed seven candidates and made its recommendations for appointments during a public meeting on Thurs., Dec. 11. On Tuesday, Tacoma City Council approved a resolution appointing Andrew Nguyen to a term that will expire on April 30, 2015, and Rahn Clayton, William Hagens, Virginia Miller, and Antonio Sablan to terms that will expire on April 30, 2016 (see "5 people could join Tacoma's Human Services Commission," Tacoma Daily Index, Jan. 5, 2015). Pierce County razes century-old downtown Tacoma building Posted online Weds., Jan. 7 Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Work is under way this week to demolish a 110-year-old, county-owned building in downtown Tacoma. In November, Pierce County officials reported the 12,500-square-foot building, which was built circa-1904/1905 and is located at 911 Tacoma Ave. S., had been lightly used in recent years, and was vacated in 2013 after an analysis of structural and electrical systems deemed it unsafe for occupancy (see "Pierce County to raze 110-yearold downtown Tacoma building," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 12, 2014). A contract was awarded to

Tacoma-based Dickson Company to complete a deconstruction and demolition project. The so-called "911 Building" sits across the street from the County-City Building and the Pierce County Jail. It has been home to a variety of businesses over the years, including the Canton Cafe, Moby Dick's Tavern, George's Tavern, the Tacoma Liquor Company, as well as various county departments, according to the Tacoma Public Library's Northwest Room online Tacoma-Pierce County Buildings Index and Pierce County officials. There are no further plans for the site at this time, according to Pierce County officials.
