Maple Valley city officials want the legislature to focus on passing a transportation package this session. They hired Jim Hedrick as their representative in Olympia for the third year in a row. The 64th Legislature is scheduled to convene Monday, Jan. 12. Road projects that city officials want to see funded include constructing a second north bound lane on state Route 169 between Witte Road South and Southeast 240th Street and making all of state Route 18 four lanes. The latter, City Manager David Johnston said, is not just a way to divert traffic from the Puget Sound metro area. “It can be important for economic development as well,” Johnston said. The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council’s Kickstarter campaign ended Dec. 31 about $19,000 short of its goal. The Art Council’s target was $43,000 for the construction of a pocket park in the alley between QFC and Starbucks in Wilderness Village. Despite a surge in last-minute MAPLE donations VALLEY (about $5,000 in the last 24 hours of the campaign), the project still fell short of the goal. Kickstarter campaigns have an all-or-nothing structure. If the project doesn’t get at least 100 percent funded by the deadline, then none of the money is collected from the ‘backers’ of the project.

Tahoma students provide a welcome change It’s not typical for a dozen teenage boys to voluntarily trek to school at 8 a.m. on a Saturday to do manual labor. “The fact that they were willing to do that shows a lot about the dedication to the program and dedication to the trade,” said Luke Thompson, teacher of Tahoma High School’s Automotive Tech-

nology Training program. Students from Tahoma’s auto program and SkillsUSA auto club provided low-income Maple Valley families with free oil changes in December and plan to continue servicing vehicles of families in need this month, as well as three months later when the vehicles should be serviced again. “It’s kind of an ongoing project,” said Thompson, in his first year as

the club’s teacher. “As new clients come on from Vine Maple Place we are able to take them in and do the service that’s needed.” The voluntary SkillsUSA auto club is a national organization for vocational classes. The oil change offering was the club’s first ever service project directly related to what is being taught in the program. Thompson said there are about 20 students in the club, 12 of whom are participating in the project. The club serviced eight vehicles in December, with most lasting 30-45 minutes, he said. An oil change is a basic level skill for these students, who are
