Embattled Bothell doctor looks forward to reapplying for license Catanzaro provides hope to national patients

After a nearly year long legal battle, Dr. John A. Catanzaro readies for his

return to treating patients the way they want to be treated - naturopathically and emotionally speaking, and on an individual basis.

Back in January of 2014,

the Department of Health suspended Catanzaro for failing to follow certain protocols during his cancer treatments, not keeping records, and performing inadequate patient examinations after allegations arose from a mainstream medical

doctor.

Julie Totland, a patient of one of the doctors at the Health and Wellness Institute of Integrative Medicine and Cancer Research, is a patient at the clinic who also takes her daughter to see Catanzaro’s team to treat

Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a rare heart condition.

“Dr. John is the only one who really thinks outside the box, as far as her condition goes,” Totland said. “We have done all of the mainstream therapies that are out there

without much success. We started seeing Dr. John because he was willing to try things that were a little more outside of the box for my daughter’s condition.”

that Kenmore resident Kyle J. Reel was the driver of a car that crashed on Simonds Road in Kirkland while traveling at speeds of 80-90 mph during September. Reel was killed in the crash and was found in the front seat.

But further investigation of the crash found that Reel was a passenger and Thomas Bird was the driver. Dave Zielinski, who is one of the fisherman on the boat “Time Bandit,” featured on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, was also a passenger in the car. Bird was eventually charged in the case.

Youth Art Exhibit runs through Jan. 29 in Kenmore

January is the last month to see the Youth Art Group Exhibit, currently open at Kenmore City Hall.

Presented by the Arts of Kenmore, the exhibit opened

on Nov. 21, 2014 and ends on Jan. 29, 2015.

“The City of Kenmore is actively involved in supporting our youth in many ways,” said Mayor David Baker.

“Having the opportunity to showcase their art is part of supporting our comunity.”

Only three weeks remain to see paintings, photos and more from local artists, ages 5 to 19, showcased in the main foyer at Kenmore City Hall.

Out of the 83 works submitted to the Arts of Kenmore group, only 26 were chosen to be displayed for the

exhibit.

First place for the juried art show held on Nov. 21st are Sophie Zhang (5-8 age category) for her work ‘Pear’, Fred Lui (9-12 age category) for his piece ‘Magical Fruit’, and Jennifer Chen (13-19 age category) for her ‘Still Life’.

A Bothell Police Department spokesperson has contacted Kirby Vacuum Cleaner, who said that they still work with independent door-todoor salesman. According to Kirby, none of the representatives should be aggressive or persistent.

The male ‘sales reps’ have been recorded on home security videos looking into cars and, in general, acting suspiciously. However they have not been linked to any recent criminal activity.

The Bothell Police Department encourages anyone who sees suspicious activity or persons to call 911 immediately to report the incident.

3. A boat racer and his daughter bring a beloved event back to Kenmore after a 38-year hiatus.

The Kenmore Hydroplane Cup event returned to Northshore in April after a nearly four decade hiatus. The event was held at the north end of Lake Washington at the newly remodeled Kenmore Boat Launch. The timed exhibition race featured a variety of boats including two cylinder and three-and-up cylinder boats, Native American war canoes, junior hydroplanes and RC hydroplane demonstration. Competitors raced one or two boats at a time up the Sammamish River, navigating around the challenging oval course and back to the Kenmore Boat Launch.

5. Small Bothell brewery threatened for using ‘12th man’ as name for new beer Bothell’s Foggy Noggin’ Brewing was threatened with a lawsuit for the use of the “12thMan” monicker for one of its beers. In true Foggy Noggin’ fashion, the brewery changed the name of the IPA to Cease and Desist.

7. Sheriff seeks information on luring incident in Bothell The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office asked for the public’s help to solve an attempted luring case in Bothell earlier this month. A 12 year-old female Skyview Junior High student reported that as she was walking home from her bus stop at the intersection of 196th Street Southeast and 24th Drive Southeast when a man sitting in a parked pick-up truck jumped out, grabbed her and yelled, “Boo!” The girl said it appeared that the man then noticed three other students in the area, got back into his

More than two businesses impacted by height restrictions There isn’t a more cherished asset for Kenmore than its waterfront and views of shimmering Lake Washington. That’s why I was disappointed your article of Dec. 17 (“New height restrictions to impact businesses along Kenmore waterfront”), which leaned heavily on quotes from two affected business owners to help readers determine whether the new 40-foot height limit for the central waterfront is fair or business-friendly.

To provide context for whether the City Council’s vote on the 40-foot limit is fair or wise, it’s important to revisit the guiding plan Kenmore commissioned in 2009 to lay out its economic goals and strategies. I was one of 11 Advisory Committee members who worked with the city and the Berk Consulting firm on that economic development plan, which appropriately has a picture of Lake Washington on its cover and highlighted as one of four key strategies the need to, “Advance the community’s connection to the waterfront.” The Berk report recognized what we as residents instinctively know: Our waterfront “is the community’s most commonly noted asset” and there must be a concerted strategy to “Explore opportunities to open up the waterfront and connect the Downtown to the lake.” Put simply, the economic plan concluded that protecting access to and views of the waterfront was mission critical for Kenmore.

It’s also worth noting that while The Reporter quotes two businesses complaining about the 40-foot height limit, numerous businesses on both sides of Bothell Way will be aided by the protection of views and view corridors. One of those businesses, Kidd Valley, stated during the council’s public hearing its preference for a lower height limit to preserve views from above the lake.

In the final analysis, this is about much more than businesses along or above the lake – and I say that as a citizen who deeply appreciates the positive contributions Kenmore Air and Northlake Marina make to our community. But there’s only one Lake Washington, and what we do to protect views of it, access to it, and beneficial uses along and near it, will be a vital harbinger of our future success. If we as a community ever give view corridors and capacity away to others, we won’t get them back.

Consider this: In the years before Kenmore incorporated, King County government gave little to no thought to protecting our northern views of Lake Washington – and we’re stuck with those short-sighted decisions. By contrast, in the years before we incorporated and since then, the neighboring city of Kirkland has revolved much of its economic development and quality of life strategies around maximizing its place along the lake – with residents, businesses, and droves of visitors enjoying the fruits of those efforts.

I appreciate the City Council arriving at a compromise with its height limit decision – higher than a Planning Commission recommendation I saw as well-thought-out, but lower than a 50-foot limit that would have benefitted two businesses while trampling on the rights and views of thousands who call this lakefront community home.

The First Lego League (FLL) is an opportunity for children, ages 9 to 14, to learn hands-on applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills in an environment that is both serious and fun.

“I like to build with Legos,” said Carissa Fieldson, a member of the Maywood ‘Atomic 7.’ “I just thought it would be fun to program and learn new things.”

For a group of students from Maywood Elementary School in Bothell, it was an opportunity to learn STEM skills but, even more, a means to have fun and make new friends while playing with robots - theirs named Billy Bob Joe the Third or ‘Bob’ for short.

“Why I like all this stuff, mostly, is because, one: it’s Legos, two: I like building stuff, three: I like programming, four: I like robots - it’s really fun,” said Skylar Gaub, student of the Maywood FLL team. “What I also like is I’m able to be with my friends.”

Each year, students of the First Lego League choose an issue within a topic to not only learn about, but to create a robot that can use it’s own sensors to autonomously glide through a tableborne challenge and a classroom presentation for other students to learn from.

“The toughest part was probably deciding how we were going to present our project, if we wanted to do a skit or a song, or something,” said Phillip Cecil. “...We didn’t want to give them a boring lecture, like blahblahblah.”

According to Philip Cecil, they decided to create a skit so they could showcase how students can learn from their team’s fun and interactive lesson.

Although, others on the team thought that distractions were the hardest thing to overcome, not the decision making process.

“We all got distracted sometimes, but in the end we really toughened in some ways, … and were serious about what we were doing,” said Logan Hough.

When the kids need a place to practice during the week, Dale is there. When the Friday night lights go up, Dale is there. When the weekday sun comes out, Dale is there. He has been there since many can remember and he is still there when they return with their own kids.

“Mike was integral, and always has been, in the upkeep of this place and the great things he does for the youth

would come up here to try to find coins or bottles or whatever,” said Mike Dale, NSD sports complex specialist. “My brother Rex tells me, I don’t remember it, but I told him ‘One day, I’m going to run this joint.’ I run the joint now.”

When he got out of the Army in 1975, he started working for the NSD as a custodian at Bothell High School and a friend of his who was running the scoreboard would share the duties during games.

Dale treats the stadium like he does his home and he makes it feel like home to anyone who visits or plays there.

Take a tour through the locker rooms and you’ll see rows of youth-sized helmets lining the window sills from the old junior high school teams that no longer play there. You’ll find signs for opposing teams so that anyone who plays at Pop Keeney feels like they are at home.

It’s the small things in life that help make this Stadium feel like CenturyLink Field, but Dale couldn’t have done it alone.

He may have the determination and the gumption to get everything done, but it takes a small army to ensure that everything is done right and done the “Dale-way”, the only way to get things done at any of the fields in the NSD. Tammy Handel, who works with Dale at the Northshore School District, is not only a coworker of Dale’s, but a classmate from junior high school, too.

For Handel, a Pop Keeney without Dale is one that she can’t imagine.

“It’s been a passion all his life, he’s put his heart into the fields,” Handel said. “I’m proud of him, and I’m proud to be a person to work for him. He’s a good person and he puts out to the community and they give back. And that’s great to see.”

Only with the help of those around him and support from the community, has Dale kept Pop Keeney as amazing as it is, as great for youth as it is.

Dale is one of the few who have been given game balls when he’s not associated with any of the teams. He was

even flown to Florida last weekend with the Bothell Cougars for their national game at Florida Atlantic University on Saturday.

Dale is part of the team.

He’s been a part of each school’s team since the parents of current students had played at the Northshore stadiums and fields.

Dale isn’t just the ‘Mayor of Pop Keeney’ as many like to call him, he’s the Commander-in-Chief, the Minister of Youth Fields… the head of an army of people, ready at a moment’s notice, to ensure that Northshore School District has not just great fields, but the best fields in Washington State and across the Nation.

New parks department coming to Bothell

T

he new 2015 to 2016 Biennium Budget has been passed by the city of Bothell. In the new budget there are many continuations of the previous biennium budget, but there are a few new things, too.

The city took advantage of the 1 percent increase in property taxes for both the 2015 and 2016 year budgets, though the council will have to re-approve the 1 percent increase for

the 2016 budget.

Another change in the coming year from the new budget is the changing of the parks manager position. Currently, the parks manager is under the public works department. Under the new proposal the parks manager position would turn into a parks director overseeing a new Bothell Parks Department within the city of Bothell. The parks manager position would be rolled over into the new director position.

“It’s a huge relief to feel like I have choices,” Totland said. “In mainstream medicine there’s the list and here’s what we can do and they don’t really... want to try things that are different. When mainstream medicine isn’t working you’re kind of stuck.”

Many people head to naturopathy because they have received few answers within traditional treatments; they’ve gone through ‘the list’ of treatments and have come out the other end without getting better.

“Why is there a question at all when this is considered to be in the scope of my practice?” asks Catanzaro. “Why am I accused of being unprofessional and unethical when its in the scope of naturopathic medicine to design personalized treatment for patients? What’s different about personalized treatments if its institutionalized or in a wellness setting?”

“When you have a doctor who actually listens to what you’ve done, that’s huge,” Totland said. “Dr. John really does. He takes the time. A lot of times, he’ll sit with us when we’re getting treatment and talk about options, how its going, what we can try, what we’ve read recently.”

For Totland and her daughter, no other doctor would try giving her daughter weekly saline solutions for her disease. Since starting with Catanzaro, Totland has brought in other POTS patients to the clinic to get the same level of individualized care that she and her daughter receives.

“It’s like you have a partner working with you to solve the problem,” Totland said. “I don’t know what we would have done without him.”

While Catanzaro won’t be able to practice until at least February 2015 when he can reapply for his naturopathy license, his clinic Health and Wellness Institute of Integrative Medicine and Cancer Research has been in full operation - which is good news for patients. Catanzaro is currently working as president of the clinic.

Officials have identified a woman who died earlier this month after a boxcutter attack as Gina M. Mangulabnan, 48, of Lynnwood.

Her death was ruled a homicide, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday.

The woman’s estranged husband, also 48, remains hospitalized with suspected self-inflicted injuries.

Police allege that he wielded a boxcutter during the domestic-violence attack. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where the woman died two days later.

Detectives have not shared additional details about their investigation.

The attack was reported Dec. 4 along Maltby Road in the Bothell area.

Since 2006, 52 Washington schools have had student representatives selected for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s (WIAA) Leadership through Education, Activities, and Personal Development (LEAP) student committee program.

This year, Bothell High School had its first student representative.

“Students like Chloe [Lium] inspire me,” said Sharyn Mehner, assistant principal of Bothell High School, of Bothell HS’s first student chosen to LEAP, in an email. “I have no doubt

that Chloe will do a great job representing our Cougar community and providing student perspective in decisions regarding interscholastic activities among schools.”

A Bothell Cougar at heart, Chloe Lium plays basketball, soccer and softball for her high school, and keeps her grades at a 3.9 GPA. “It’s a goal that I’ve set myself, but also I like the sense of personal achievement.

When I do well in sports I like to carry over that feeling of achievement into the classroom,” Lium said. “I like to be involved in what I do and this gave me the opportunity to have a voice and be a leader.”

Being chosen as one of

the 13 students that will participate in LEAP this year, Lium will attend meetings to discuss issues within WIAA and how to solve them, but will also be the voice for other WIAA students.

“Its been really fun. I really didn’t have a good idea what I was getting myself into,” Lium said. “It’s pretty eye opening because the tournaments I’d played in I was now helping plan and manage, it’s really cool to be a part of that.”

Lium has already been to several of the LEAP meetings and events and has met other students from across the state.

“It’s really rewarding to know that something I love so much, I’m going to be

putting my hands on it and helping kind of shape it into something new or fix problems, or show others how much fun high school sports can be,” said Lium.

In order to be accepted to the program, Chloe first had to meet the requirements and submit an application. Now that she has been accepted, she will be discussing and planning WIAA activities, meeting with other LEAP students, develop projects and initiatives that promote LEAP and build awareness of the value it brings to students, and create a blog (coming in mid January 2015) for the WIAA LEAP Blog.

Inslee’s budget has money to expand Northshore parks Reporter Newspapers

Earlier this month, Gov. Jay Inslee announced a funding proposal for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition to the tune of $70 million, some of which could be coming to local parks.

First on the list is more than $2 million for Saint Edwards Park, in Kenmore, for the acquisition of almost 10 acres of shoreline property. The investment would add another 450 feet of Lake Washington shoreline to the park, and more trails, one connecting the northern neighborhood with the park and another that will add a new loop within the park.

The addition will also preserve more habitat for freshwater clams and spawning salmon from the local streams, along with offering a new swimming area that is shallower and warmer than current park waterfront.

The second local impact of the new funding would come for North Creek Forest park.

The city of Bothell has been working on purchasing 64 acres of urban forest to create the North Creek Forest park. The new grant monies from the state would allow the acquisition of 21.84 acres - the majority of the remaining acreage to create the park.

The forest contains at least two priority bird species for protection, the pileated woodpecker and the band-tailed pigeon, along with a spawning stream for ESA listed Chinook Salmon.

The city of Bothell is also working on getting federal monies, through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, to match the state grant monies in order to complete the work on the North Creek Forest.

While these items are not yet funded, the proposal will go before legislators in 2015, with expected passage by early summer.

With opposition to his proposed 2015-17 biennial budget coming from both sides of the aisle, the state’s top executive says it’s up to the Legislature to provide a better alternative.

Inslee revealed his budget this past month in separate portions, ending with his revenue strategy. Staff members from Reporter newspapers met with Inslee in Bellevue to discuss the budget.

Inslee’s budget would fund a number of major

state transportation projects over the next 12 years, including completing the State Route 520 floating bridge and Interstate 405 projects between Renton and Bellevue.

About $4.8 billion of that money would come from a cap-and-trade plan on carbon emissions that affects 130 of the state’s biggest polluters. That, the governor said, would advance the state’s clean air obligations without raising the gas tax. He added this
