Tacoma Bid Watch
Chinese Reconciliation Park, Sheridan Elementary Safe Route, and sidewalk improvements Posted online Tues., Dec. 16 Article By Todd Matthews, Editor Image Courtesy City of Tacoma The Tacoma Daily Index often publishes the City of Tacoma's calls for bids asking contractors to meet the City's needs on a range of supplies, services, and projects. Here is a short-list of information related to recent and notable calls for bids issued from Tacoma City Hall. First, the City is accepting bids from contractors interested in completing the third phase of Tacoma's Chinese Reconciliation Park (pictured), according to a legal notice published this week in the Tacoma Daily Index. Bid documents prepared by City staff show the the project will increase the size of the current parking lot by adding an additional 30 parking spaces; removing approximately 1,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil currently stockpiled on-site underneath the Schuster Parkway bridge; and installing signage, a bamboo wall with a Chinese motif, plantings, and lighting. A pre-bid meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Weds., Jan. 7, 2015, at the Tacoma Municipal Building, located at 747 Market St., Room 148, in downtown Tacoma. The budget is estimated at $320,000. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Tues., Jan. 20, 2015. More information is available online at tacomadailyindex.com and cityoftacoma.org. Second, following up on an item reported in the Tacoma Daily Index last month (see "City seeks contractor for Sheridan Elementary Safe Routes project," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 18, 2014), six contractors have bid on a project that aims to bring a range of safety improvements for pedestrians and
bicyclists around Sheridan Elementary School. The project recently dates back to April 2013, when City officials announced they would partner with Sheridan Elementary School, located at 5317 McKinley Ave. E., and use a nearly-$380,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to complete the project, which aims to enhance students' walking and biking routes to school by installing curb extensions at crosswalks, new sidewalks and curbs with ADA-compliant ramps, and secure bike racks at the school. City officials celebrated the project by hosting a kick-off event that included a neighborhood cleanup, bike rodeo, free lunch, free helmets and fittings, bike repairs, and bike giveaways (see "Safe Route' will guide Tacoma's Sheridan Elementary students," Tacoma Daily Index, April 18, 2013). The City issued a call for bids in November. The deadline to bid on the project expired at 11 a.m. on Tues., Dec. 16. According to information on the City's Web site, the following contractors submitted bids: Olivas Valdez, Inc. (La Center, Wash. — $276,528 base bid / $4,200 Alt B); Nova Contracting,
Inc. (Olympia, Wash. — $366,965 base bid / $3,000 Alt B); RV Associates, Inc. (Port Orchard, Wash. — $269,927 Base bid / $4,746 Alt B); Stan Palmer Construction (Bremerton, Wash. — $426,289 / $3,300 Alt B); Northwest Cascade, Inc. (Tacoma, Wash. — $318,094.50 / $5,400 Alt B); and Global Contractors LLC (Tacoma, Wash. — $352,160 / $1,800 Alt B). Finally, three contractors have bid on a project that aims to bring a range of sidewalk improvements to locations throughout the city. According to a legal notice published last month in the Tacoma Daily Index, the project calls for removing and reconstructing asphalt and concrete pavement, curbs, sidewalks, and curb ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project budget is estimated at $500,000. The deadline to bid on the project expired at 11 a.m. on Tues., Dec. 16. According to information on the City's Web site, the following contractors submitted bids: Asphalt Patch Systems, Inc. (Puyallup, Wash. — $555,710); Stan Palmer Construction (Bremerton, Wash. — $746,810); and Global Contractors LLC (Tacoma, Wash. — $1,119,430).
