$7.7M Dept. of Ecology grants could fund 5 Tacoma stormwater projects Posted online Fri., Dec. 5 The City of Tacoma has applied for five grants from the Washington State Department of Ecology totaling nearly $7.7 million, according to Tacoma City Manager T. C. Broadnax's weekly report to Tacoma City Council dated Nov. 25, 2014. City staff report that if grants are awarded, the City would be required to provide approximately $1.9 million in matching funds. Here is a short breakdown of each project, grant fund request, and matching fund amounts: Prairie Line Trail Treatment Retrofit — A nearly $308,000 grant would help pay for a project to incorporate highly visible and educational stormwater treatment facilities into a two-block section of Tacoma's Prairie Line Trail, between South 15th and 17th Streets, in downtown Tacoma. If a grant is awarded, the City would need to provide $77,000 in matching funds. South Tacoma Way Green Infrastructure Project — A nearly $2.1 million grant would help pay for a project that aims to improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff through infiltration in a four-block section of the South Tacoma Way Business District,

2-acre tide flats site available for lease Posted online Weds., Dec. 3 Port of Tacoma officials announced Wednesday a two-acre site on Tacoma's tide flats is available for lease. The graveled and fenced parcel (pictured), located at 1702 Port of Tacoma Road, is near shipping terminals, zoned Port Maritime Industrial, and accessible via Interstate 5, State Route 509, and State Route 705. More information is available online at portoftacoma.com. between South 52nd Street and South 56th Street. If a grant is awarded, the City would need to provide $522,500 in matching funds. Bennett Street Pervious Project — A nearly $430,000 grant would help pay for a pilot project that aims to reduce the roadway footprint, while providing water quality and infiltration within the North Tacoma Watershed. Replacing gravel with a hard surface is expected to reduce the particulate pollution caused from the area's high arsenic levels as a result of the Asarco Smelter. 3 locals could join Tacoma Human Rights Commission Posted online Fri., Dec. 5 By Todd Matthews, Editor Three people could soon be appointed to Tacoma's Human Rights Commission. The 15-member commission is tasked with studying, investigating, and mediating community issues that may result from prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination, according to the City's Web site. Commission members are appointed by Tacoma City Council; serve three-year terms; and include representatives of the general public and the employer, labor, religious, racial, ethnic, handicapped, and women's groups in the city. The Human Rights Commission typically meets at 5:30 p.m. every third Thursday at Tacoma City Hall. Earlier this year, the City issued a call for applicants to fill one unexpired term and two three-year terms on the commission. Tacoma City Council's Public Safety, Human Services,

and Education Committee interviewed five candidates — Kelsey Brennan, Kevin Cline, Darion Reese (seeking re-appointment), Tono Sablan, and Suzanne Skaar — during a public meeting on Thurs., Nov. 13 (see "5 candidates apply to serve on Tacoma Human Rights Commission," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 12, 2014). The committee then forwarded its recommendations for appointments to the full city council for final confirmation. Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution to re-appoint re-appoint Reese to serve a three-year term to expire on Dec. 31, 2017; appoint Nimick to a serve an unexpired term to expire on Dec. 31, 2016; and appoint Skaar to serve a three-year term to expire on Dec. 31, 2017, during a public meeting on Tues., Dec. 9, at 5 p.m., at Tacoma City Hall Copies of the resolution and staff memo are available online at tacomadailyindex.com.
hood Project — A nearly $2.4 million grant would help pay for a project to convert two failed residential streets into green infrastructure using pervious pavement. The project covers six city blocks and will fully infiltrate a six-acre neighborhood. If a grant is awarded, the City would need to provide $590,125 in matching funds. 40th Street Green Infrastructure Project — A nearly $2.5 million grant would help pay for a project to provide water quality and flow reduction for 17 acres by using permeable pavement to retrofit 1,700 linear feet of existing residential road, as well as constructing bioretention to treat runoff from adjacent existing roadways. If a grant is awarded, the City would need to provide $616,750 in matching funds.
