Businesses, churches, schools and other groups blew away the goals this year for food and cash

donations to the Kent Food Bank during the fourth annual Kent Turkey Challenge. The friendly competition raised 10,820 pounds of canned food and $22,418, said Katie Brown, marketing director for Torklift Central, which organizes the drive to provide Thanksgiving meals for people who come to the Food

Bank. Sixty-six businesses participated in the challenge that started in early October. Organizers set goals this year of 4,000 pounds of food and $17,000 after raising 2,784 pounds of food and $9,978 in 2013. [ more DRIVE page 2 ]

Kent Technology Academy students from Mill Creek Middle School have been invited to represent the school globally at Microsoft’s Global Enterprise Challenge (GEC), but the program is stalled due to differences in the district’s IT setup.

The KTA is one of two schools in the United States to join the competition, which has run for eight years. Competing schools are from countries as distant as Albania and Armenia, but also include Jamaica, Singapore and Bangladesh. Students work in teams as part of a [ more KTA page 4 ]

A historic Kent neighborhood has become a registered landmark, the first of its kind in South King County. The King County Landmarks Commission unanimously approved the Mill Creek Neighborhood Association’s nomination for official landmark designation at a Nov. 20 public hearing at the

Kent Senior Activity Center. The Kent Historical Museum and Mill Creek Neighborhood Council have been working with city and county officials to complete the steps necessary to designate a concentrated, lower East Hill area of historic homes as a registered King County Landmark District. With a showering of confetti, horns and a special greeting from Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke, the ShoWare Center welcomed a special guest. Eric Hannon became the two-millionth ShoWare guest last Friday night. The 38-year-old West Hill

resident, who works at CDK Digital Marketing in Seattle, knew that the ShoWare Center was nearing its two-million mark but didn’t expect it would be him.
