Lessons beyond the classroom New teachers at Kent-Meridian learn how to work with students beyond what they were told in textbooks

While experienced teachers at the Kent School District know their way around a classroom, it’s a different experience for those who are brand new. Between working through lesson plans, navigating the district’s paperwork and establishing rapport with students, there’s a lot that education classes don’t teach.

Alisa Leudtke and Bud Bannon are new teachers at Kent-Meridian High School, and both have had to adapt what they learned in college around the realities of the actual teaching environment. Bannon received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Washington State University, and then remained in Pullman for a master’s program. [ more TEACHERS page 5 ]

A Kent City Council committee approved a proposal to extend for as many as 10 years a contract with Philadelphia-based SMG to market and operate the cityowned ShoWare Center. The council’s Operations Committee voted 3-0 on Tuesday to recommend that the full seven-member council approve the agreement that will pay SMG $135,000 a year to run the $84.5 million arena that seats 6,024. The city covers those losses with money out of its general fund. “We would be worse than where we are now if we didn’t have them,” Councilman Bill Boyce said about the company. Kent City Council President Dana Ralph said the waiver might be the reason several readers recently contacted the Kent Reporter to claim Boeing doesn’t pay the B&O tax. “Boeing does pay the B&O,” Ralph said during a phone interview. “They have a waiver for the research and development but are not totally exempt. That is not everything they do.” [ more BOEING page 4 ]
