WHIDBEY WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Helping others isn’t about charity, it’s about community Kate Daniel

South Whidbey Record

Lynn Willeford, activist, feminist, mother, spouse, friend, writer and co-owner of The Clyde, relocated to Whidbey Island from New England in the 1970s as a self-described “back to the lander” with a dream of building her own house in Langley. After completing the construction of the home she and her husband Blake still occupy today, she began setting the foundation for what would eventually become a strong community network of fellow philanthropists and activists working for a supportive South Whidbey community. Throughout the decades, Willeford and her husband have never stopped building upon and dreaming with the community they are so proud to call their own. Willeford founded and co-founded numerous respected organizations including Whidbey Island Local Lenders, Hearts and Hammers, Friends of Friends Medical Support Fund, the Back to School Project, Citizens for Sensible Development and Fair University.

In addition, she and Blake ensure visibility for budding local businesses with pre-movie raffles and introductions at The Clyde and volunteer with organizations such as Good Cheer, where Lynn works as “the spice girl” sorting and packaging spices for the food bank. This month, she and husband Blake are also building a home for their son and his family. “My husband calls me the idiot savant of activism,” she said with a laugh. “I see something that is missing and I try to do something to fill the gap.” The gap, Lynn said, is usually something simple. “[South Whidbey] was missing people who would help repair your home; it was missing people who would help with medical expenses; it was missing people who would help with back to school; and it was missing people who would help invest in your business,” said Willeford. “I am very simple. It is usually a simple need, a simple organization, and usually all volunteer.”

According to Willeford, the reciprocity of service is crucial. Rather than charity, she considers the work she does to be a sort of hand-up to the community. “I know how much it makes people feel good to help each other. That is the big thing to me is that it be a completely reciprocal relationship,” she said. “One year you might be a homeowner being helped by a team from Hearts and Hammers and the next year, you might be on the board of Hearts and Hammers. One year you might be donating to Friends of Friends and another year you might be helped by them...It happens all the time; I see people exchanging roles.” “The idea is that we’re not doing charity, we’re helping each other.” The reciprocity of her community giving continues at The Clyde theater, where Willeford, who began work at The Clyde approximately 40 years ago, continues to take tickets, tend to the snack bar, handle social media and payroll, greeting a bevy of friends old and new, occasionally introducing new local businesses

Lynn Willeford and her husband, Blake Willeford, own and operate Langley’s iconic Clyde Theater. with raffles before Saturday evening shows. Although their son took over many of the theater duties in September, Willeford said she and her husband have no plans to retire. “Blake and I will not be leaving; we are not retiring. We will be standing at the door at age 90, greeting

people with EasiReaders,” she said with a chuckle. Her personal philosophy, Willeford said, is best summed in a poem by Marge Piercy, “To Be of Use.” Its final two lines read: “The pitcher cries for water to carry, and a person for work that is real.”

Sylvan Learning Center Sharon Morehead Director

380 SE Pioneer Way, Ste 101 Oak Harbor, WA 98277 360-675-8010 www.sylvanlearning.com

It’s been another rough night on the homework front. Twenty minutes of homework has taken two hours and includes tears, battles with parents and everyone in the family is frustrated. Worst of all though, your child does not feel good about himself and his school abilities. “Homework challenges are really a symptom that something else is going on,” says Sharon Morehead, Director of the local Oak Harbor Sylvan Learning. “If children have mastered the three R’s—reading writing and arithmetic, they can and should be able to do their homework on their own.” Morehead should know. She was a Reading and Math Intervention Specialist in California with a degree in psychology. She working for the Oak Harbor School District for 4 years and began working at Sylvan Learning 7 years ago. “I am constantly hearing the problem with students in Oak Harbor not doing well is due to the fact that these students are children in families that relocate frequently, Morehead notes. Her response, “There are other reasons why children do not do well in school, not just because they moved around. We have students who attend Sylvan Learning who come with low confidence and demonstrated low capabilities and leave brimming with confidence and seriously improved skills.” Morehead maintains children thrive at Sylvan because of the way Sylvan Learning designs and executes its programs. “We believe education is everything and believe that learning should be personal. So, our programs are highly individualized and adaptive. Plus great teachers don’t just instruct and manage they inspire and motivate. Sylvan teachers are trained to do just that. Technology doesn’t teach, but technology accelerates learning because it is efficient and accurate. Sylvan incorporates technology to be able to deliver research-based curriculum that is protocol driven because results matter.” Morehead has a list of telltale clues that a child needs extra help with schooling. If any of these clues resonate in your household, call Sharon Morehead. “Teaching matters,” ends Morehead, “But we we do not capture children except by the heart.”

Spoiled Dog Winery welcomes people to come and enjoy our fine wines and have a vine to bottle experience at our vineyard and winery. We are celebrating our 11th year and this year our estate Pinot Noir grapes are amazing! Wonder through the vineyard sipping a nice glass of wine and enjoy the farm - or take a tour. Special events include winemaker dinners throughout the summer that are magical (under the heritage apple trees overlooking the lower vineyard). Wonderful local chefs prepare incredible food paired with our fine wines - and the proceeds are donated to local non-profits. We thank the community for their support!

Gail is delighted to have a business that allows her to indulge her love of good wine!

Mona Newbauer understands that a prosperous business has to take a moment or two every so often to play, have fun, and appreciate its successes. Having a sinfully sweet shop in the picturesque, seaside town in Langley makes that all the easier.

She is especially interested in wine and food pairing, and sees wine as an affordable, every day luxury to be a part of any dinner table.

Pie-making is becoming a lost art in the modern world of prepared foods, and Shirlee has accepted the challenge of keeping that skill alive. For the past thirteen years during the market season (The first of May through December 20th) she has “Pie for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.” been selling a wide variety of sweet and savory pies made from scratch at her thriving booth, Pie for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at the Bayview Farmers Market, She keeps it as local as possible, sourcing fruit from Whidbey farmers and from Washington State, foraging for wild mushrooms to put in quiches and picking wild berries for real Whidbey Island blackberry pies. For those who are stymied by lack of success in making pies, Shirlee offers one pie-making class a year before Thanksgiving. This year’s class will be on Saturday, November 15th and is still open for enrollment. Shirlee, a long-time resident of the island, brings a love of cooking and a wealth of experience to the classroom in a relaxed and interactive style. Be brave—tackle crust!
