Whidbey General slapped with lawsuit Defense attorney says money, bad blood behind accusations By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

The woman allegedly assaulted by the head nurse at

Whidbey General Hospital has filed a lawsuit against the hospital district. An attorney representing Linda Gipson, chief nursing officer, took the offensive during an interview with the Whidbey News-Times this week. Andrew Schwarz of the Seattle firm Schwarz-Garrison called the lawsuit and the criminal allegations against his client “absurd.” “It’s an outrageous abuse of the legal system both in terms of the civil action and the criminal action,” he said.

Officials at both the sheriff’s office and the prosecutor’s office, however, said they are simply doing their jobs without bias and that the criminal case against Gipson is based on a thorough investigation with multiple independent witnesses. Prosecutors charged Gipson with fourth-degree assault earlier this year. The pretrial hearing in District Court was recently reschduled to Dec. 2. Seattle attorney Gregory Skidmore filed the civil lawsuit

Candidates take differing views on transit, marijuana By JANIS REID Staff reporter

The two candidates running for Island County District 3 seat offer differing views on top county issues like the legalization of marijuana and dealing with recent problems at Island Transit. Democrat Karla Jacks, of Camano Island, said that she would have done the same as the board did earlier this year and allowed for the sale of recreational marijuana in Island County. “I would have because the voters of Island County overwhelmingly supported it,” Jack said. Rick Hannold, a Republican who lives on North Whidbey, said he would absolutely have not supported recreational marijuana in the county. “I don’t like any industry that makes its money off the vices of others,” Hannold said. “I personally think that marijuana is an entry-level drug. If I had been sitting on the board of commissioners when they decided … I would have voted ‘no.’”

Artist Ries Niemi and Friend Holloway install two new statues at Oak Harbor High School Thursday, Oct. 2. Planning started in Spring 2013 and a design was chosen in May 2013, but Niemi didn’t build the statue until July, with the help of Holloway, who did the welding. There will be a dedication for the artworks Nov. 5 at the high school for art students and donors.
