Demand rises as vacancies shrink in local rental housing market BY ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com

There’s good, not so good, and downright scary news on the rental housing front. On the sunny side, Steven Norman, executive director of the King County Housing Authority, told City officials Monday at Auburn City Hall, the recent expansion of the regional economy has kicked up the demand for housing. As of Monday, vacancy rates across the region were down to 3.8 percent, and they are expected to keep dropping, Norman said. In the AuburnEnumclaw housing market, apartment vacancies are down to a paltry 1.9 percent, a statistically insignificant number, housing experts say. In 2014, rental rates have risen about 6.3 percent, and in 2015 they are projected to jump more than 5 percent. That number doesn’t even factor in high-end construction projects now in the pipeline. with about a new model that looks like a more permanent solution,” Dana Hinman, communications director for the City of Auburn, said Monday.

From an early age, Madeleine Gasperi knew she was destined to write. “I’ve always written,” the 16-yearold Auburn High School junior said. “It’s funny, I started off writing for the Good Ol’ Days contest in the second grade. And I won that and thought, ‘I must be good at this.’ So I decided to keep writing.” For Gasperi, a self-published author of juvenile fiction books “I Have Two Dads: Different Types of Families” and “Knock It Off! Anti-bullying: The Young Adult Picture Book”, just writing stories wasn’t enough.

City optimistic that Public Health clinic will be saved BY ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com

The City of Auburn doesn’t have a solution yet that would keep the Public Health clinic in Auburn open.

But amidst ongoing talks with potential partners, none of them named, optimism reigns, and word around City Hall is that something will be worked out before King County can close the clinic at the end of the year.

If not with King County, then via a partnership or partnerships with local medical organizations. “We have some great medical organizations in Auburn that we have been having discussions
