GTCF leader to retire next summer

Posted online Thurs., Sept. 25 Photo Courtesy Greater Tacoma Community Foundation The President and CEO of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation announced Thursday she will retire next summer. "It's been an honor and privilege to work with passionate people who invest in making our community an even better place to live, work, and play," said Rose Lincoln Hamilton (pictured), who joined the philanthropic organization in 2004. "I am proud of the work we've done together over the last decade. I have learned so much during my time here and am grateful to be part of an organization impacting thousands of lives every year. After I retire, I look forward to staying involved in community efforts." The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation aims to strengthen the community by fostering generosity and connecting people who care with causes that matter. Since its creation in 1981, the organization has distributed more than $94 million in grants and scholarships. It currently manages more than 450 funds and $107 million in assets. During Lincoln Hamilton's tenure, the organization doubled its assets from $48 million to $107 million, and awarded grants totaling $34 million. "Rose has devoted eleven years to increasing the reach of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation," said Ben. B. Cheney Foundation Executive Director Bradbury Cheney. "Her leadership and collaboration with other funders has led to increased partnerships that have supported numerous community efforts. Under her tenure, these positive outcomes have further established the Community Foundation as a valuable community asset." Lincoln Hamilton will retire in June 2015. She currently serves on the board of directors of Commencement Bank, Philanthropy Northwest, Foundation for Tacoma Students, Lakewold Gardens, Pacific Bonsai Museum, Tacoma Housing Authority, and University of Washington Tacoma's Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences Advisory Committee. Prior to joining the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, Lincoln Hamilton was the Assistant Vice President of Public Relations and Director of Community Relations at Safeco Corporation. Port of Tacoma 10 structures to be razed on tide flats

Article and Photos By Todd Matthews, Editor The Port of Tacoma Commission Thursday authorized staff to move ahead on a plan to demolish 10 structures on a nearly nine-acre site on Tacoma's tide flats to make way for future Port operations. The properties, located near the intersection of East 11th Street and Taylor Way, were acquired by the Port of Tacoma over the past two decades, according to Jan Shawyer, an engineering project manager at the Port. Earlier this year, commissioners authorized $150,000 to be spent on design work related to the project; the Port has spent approximately $84,000 so far. Six buildings slated for demolition contain lead paint contamination and will require hazardous materials abatement measures. The demolition will also remove four storage tanks. On Thursday, commissioners authorized spending $700,000 to complete the demolition. The Port of Tacoma has set aside $929,000 from its Capital Improvement Plan to pay for the project. The Port is tentatively scheduled to put the project out for bid next week, award a contract by the end of next month, and see the

project completed in February. The site could then be used to store equipment and vehicles, or marketed for other uses, according to Shawyer. Two buildings slated for demolition include the former offices of Hercules Heavy Hauling and Tacoma Municipal Railway (pictured top left and top right), located at 1123 Taylor Way, and the former Bob's Pier restaurant, located at 3320 E. 11th St. The former Tacoma Fire Station No. 15 (pictured above right), located at 3510 E. 11th St. and near the demolition site, is not one of the buildings to be razed. The City-owned, onestory Mediterranean-style structure has some measure of protection because it is listed on the City of Tacoma's Register of Historic Places, the Washington Heritage Register, and the National Register of Historic Places.
