Pierce County Judge City seeks wrecking crews for 3 Tacoma buildings McCarthy to retire
Photo Courtesy Pierce County Pierce County Superior Court Judge John McCarthy announced he will retire this fall. McCarthy, 65, has served as a judge for over 22 years: five years in Pierce County District Court, and the last 18 years with Superior Court. Before joining the bench, he served as an elected member of the Port of Tacoma Commission from 1983 to 1992. "It has been an honor to serve the people of Pierce County and Washington State for the past 30 years," said McCarthy, who will officially retire on Mon., Dec. 1. Preparatory School and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. He continues to officiate youth and high school football and basketball and has done so for over 17 years. He also volunteers in Mount Rainier National Park. He is married to Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. They have four adult children and nine grandchildren. McCarthy took a leave of absence earlier this year to be treated for cancer. "My family and I appreciated all of the well-wishers during my recent treatment for cancer," said McCarthy. "I am happy to say that my doctors have given me a clean bill of health and I can call myself a cancer survivor. Now I'm anxious to spend more time with my grandchildren and pursue some other interests."
Repairs planned for Foss Waterway fire station floating dock The floating dock at a fire station on Tacoma's Thea Foss Waterway could soon be upgraded, according to a legal notice published in the Tacoma Daily Index today. The project calls for replacing the piles and repairing and rehabilitating the existing floating dock system at Tacoma Fire Station No. 18, which is located at 302 E. 11th St. The project budget is estimated at $175,000. Work must
be completed by Feb. 1, 2015. The bid deadline expires on Tues., Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. A pre-bid meeting will be held at Fire Station No. 18 on Weds., Oct. 1, at 1:30 p.m. Parking is limited at the site.
