Central Kitsap woman hit and killed by car BY KEVAN MOORE KMOORE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Central Kitsap resident Alana KemppainenCartwright, 23, was killed early in the morning Wednesday, Sept. 10, after being struck by vehicle in the 5500 block of Tracyton Boulevard. A 25-year-old

man she was walking with was also hit by the car and was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries. The driver of the four-door Subaru Legacy that struck Kemppainen-Cartwright and the 25-year-old man was arrested by sheriff ’s

deputies and booked into Kitsap County Jail for one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault. The collision, which occurred near the site of the former Tracyton Elementary School, was first reported at 2:17 a.m. Deputy Scott Wilson, a

spokesman for the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, says the driver is a 26-year-old Bremerton resident. Also in the vehicle with him were a 29-year-old man from Poulsbo in the backseat and another man in the front passenger seat who fled the scene following the collision.

“The right front-seat passenger bailed and fled so we’re still trying to determine his exact identity to go and talk to him,” Wilson said late Wednesday morning. Wilson said the occupants of the vehicle and the pedestrians had all been at the Tracyton Tavern earlier

in the night, but he didn’t know if they all knew each other. He said KemppainenCartwright and the man that was struck were both walking in the northbound lane of travel, not along the shoulder, when they were hit. Wilson said the driver was set to be charged Thursday.

Hales Ales will close its restaurant Dad, daughter plan to escape from Alcatraz

BY RICHARD D. OXLEY ROXLEY@CENTRALKITSAPREPORTER.COM

After more than four years trying to establish a foothold in Kitsap County, Hale’s Ales is closing up shop at the mall in Silverdale. “We’re kind of licking our wounds at the moment,” said owner Mike Hale. “We gave it a great shot and it’s a shame.” Hale’s Ales in Silverdale will remain open until Sept. 30. The restaurant employs 35 servers, cooks, bartenders and other staff. Hale’s Ales employees were given a month notice of the closing, and two weeks severance pay. The mall location that Mike opened with his wife Kathleen Hale wasn’t ultimately conducive to the restaurant, he said, and the brewer couldn’t seem to make the location profitable. “We never could quite get it to produce the numbers it needed to cover all the overhead,” Kathleen said. “We gave it a college try, kept it going for four years, but we had to squeal uncle.” “The mall traffic is pretty light, that was probably one of our mistakes of moving into a mall,” she

Hale’s Ales’ Silverdale location will remain open until Sept. 30. said. Mike agreed that the mall wasn’t a good fit for the company, but also noted that they tripped up when they first attempted to create a large restaurant out of their pub. “When we first opened we kind of stubbed our toe and service and food quality wasn’t as we intended,” Mike said. “We attempted to

correct that over the years, but people have long memories, and we never were able to recover the volume. It may be that the place was too big to begin with and that it has high rent volume there.” The Silverdale restaurant is one of two Hale’s Ales locations. The

Silverdale’s Bruce Waterbury will turn 55 years old on Sept. 17. His daughter, Kristi Balant, will turn 28 on Sept. 13. But the dad-daughter duo has special plans for a joint celebration on Sunday, Sept. 14. They’re going to swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco. “When I tell people about it, they tell me I’m crazy,” said Waterbury. “Many people believe that you can’t swim Alcatraz because of the extremely cold, choppy water,

the strong current and the sharks. Many people believe this because of the movie ‘Escape From Alcatraz.’ Obviously, it can be done and many people do it each year.” According to his daughter, the two planned a birthday trip to visit Alcatraz, and the swim came about a bit later. “Dad’s always had an interest in Alcatraz,” Balant said. “He’s a history buff. So we planned a birthday trip to go see it and when I got looking into it, I found out there was a swim that weekend. SEE ALCATRAZ, A9

Man faces charge of reckless burning

A 51-year-old Kingston man with a felony escape warrant was arrested Sept. 3. Gregory Duhon was booked into Kitsap County Jail for the warrant and firstdegree reckless burning, according to charging documents. Bail is set at $50,000. The arrest followed an investigation into multiple fires in Bremerton on Aug. 8, including a fire that caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to a home on Chester Avenue. At 5:12 p.m. on Aug.8, Bremerton firefighters and police responded to the structure fire on Chester Avenue. A witness told investigators that she thought someone set off fireworks, which could have started the fire, according to charging documents. Duhon was working at the home that caught fire and in the basement of a dance studio located near the home, according to the documents. Duhon denied any involvement in using fireworks recently. However, a resident of the home that caught fire told investigators he saw Duhon with fireworks a day or two before the fires, according to the documents. According to the resident, on Aug. 27 Duhon admitted starting the fire by lighting fireworks near the building. He claimed it was an accident. After Duhon was arrested Sept. 3, he admitted throwing a firecracker near the home that caught fire, according to the documents. Based on evidence, Duhon also started fires in the alley of the 1200 block of 4th and Burwell Streets with fireworks, according to the documents. Duhon was arrested approximately one year ago for reckless discharge of fireworks; he was caught shooting fireworks over moving vehicles on Wheaton Way, according to the documents. Duhon will appear in court Sept. 16. $ $$$$$$$$$$ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ (With or Without Title) $ some restrictions apply $ $ $ $$$$$$$$$$

Cougars lose to the Wolves in season opener BY DANNIE OLIVEAUX DOLIVEAUX@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

South Kitsap took advantage of a couple of first-quarter fumbles by Central Kitsap, as the Wolves posted a 21-3 win Sept. 5, in nonleague action against their Kitsap County rivals before a standing-room only crowd at Silverdale Stadium. SK’s Noah French recovered CK running back Sean Barefield’s fumble at the Cougar 25. Marshaud DeWalt scored six plays later on a 13-yard run with 6:43 to go in the first quarter. Nolan Suuza tacked on the pointafter kick for a 7-0 lead. On the Cougars’ second possession, quarterback Kaleb Bates fumbled near midfield and Ramon Marin scooped up the ball and raced 50 yards for an apparent touchdown. But the Wolves were called for a personal foul on the play and took over at the Cougar 37. Quarterback Cooper Canton’s 36-yard pass to Brayden

Maynard set up DeWalt’s second TD — a one-yard run with 4:31 to go in the first. On CK’s third possession, they marched to the Wolves’ 19-yard line. The Cougars faked a 37-yard field goal attempt on fourth-and-10, but Bates’ pass completion to Kevin White was short of the first down. In the second quarter, the Cougars drove the ball 77 yards to the SK 3. Bates was sacked for a two-yard loss on second down and his third-down pass attempted fell incomplete. The Cougars settled for a 22-yard White field goal with 1:43 — their only points of the game. In the third quarter, Hudson Keffer intercepted a Canton pass to give CK the ball near midfield. After another personal foul flag on SK, the Cougars returned to ball back to the Wolves as Marin intercepted a Bates’ pass and returned it to the end zone for an apparent touchdown. But another flag nulified the TD and SK took over

at their own 35. South Kitsap put the game out of reach with DeWalts’ 11-yard TD run early in the final quarter. Bates, starting in his first game at quarterback, completed 15-of-27 for 113 yards and added 27 yards rushing on three carries. Kelsey Deer caught five balls for 52 yards and Keffer had four balls for 42 yards. The Cougars will face the Olympic Trojans in the “Battle of Bucklin Hill” on Sept. 12 at 7:15 p.m. at Silverdale Stadium. Wilson 30, Olympic 20: The Trojans scored twice in the fourth but it was enough as their lost their season opener on the road in Tacoma in nonleague action. Tyree Johnson rushed for 53 yards and scored on a 8-yard run and 17-yard pass for the Trojans. Geordyn Shinard had an 8-yard TD in the fourth. 21-yard run in the third and Kasey Trask nailed a 30-yard field goal for a 24-18 lead, before Rio Ortega scored on a 25-yard pass play for Elma.

Former teammates reunite for game at Silverdale Stadium BY DANNIE OLIVEAUX

PORT ORCHARD INDEPENDENT

Jacob Lewis and Kaleb Bates became friends six years ago in California. They played for the Lemoore Jaguars, a youth football team, and went to two division championships. In 2013, the two close friends moved to Kitsap County, unaware that they would be facing each other on opposite side of the gridiron during the Sept. 5 season opener as Central Kitsap hosted longtime rival South Kitsap at Silverdale Stadium. Lewis, a 5-foot-9 senior, is the starting safety for South, while Bates, a 6-foot junior, was the starting quarterback for CK. Ironically, both worn No. 2. South Kitsap won, 21-3. Before moving to Kitsap County, Lewis and Bates were on the Lemoore High School junior varsity football team in 2012. Bates moved to the Silverdale area in 2013, then Lewis moved to the South Kitsap area. Lewis’ family moved here to be closer to family, while Bates’ family moved because his mother

— who is enlisted in the U.S. Navy — was transferred to Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor. Jennifer Downey, Lewis’ mother, said that she posted a photo of Lewis with his No. 2 South football jersey on Aug. 25. “Ten minutes later, Kaleb calls him and asked him if he was playing for South Kitsap,” she said. “He told Jacob that he was the starting quarterback for Central Kitsap.” Lewis said he didn’t know Bates was playing football for Central Kitsap.

“He hit me up the other day,” Lewis said. “This is crazy and I can’t believe it. We played two years together and went to two championship games together.” While in California, Lewis and Bates attended the same elementary and junior high school in Lemoore, south of Fresno. “He moved down here a little bit before I did,” said Lewis, who moved to the area in June 2013. “I found out like two weeks ago, Jacob was up here also,” Bates said. “We known each

other since the third grade.” Before Lewis came to South, he played junior varsity football at Lemoore High School his first two years in high school and his junior year at Peninsula High School in Purdy.

During the Sept. 5 game, Lewis tackled Bates once, but officials flagged him for a late hit. “I didn’t hit him late, I just gave him a little shove,” Lewis said. Lewis also had a 75-yard

kickoff return to start the second half, but a penalty wiped out the long run and the Wolves had to start at their own 40-yard line. Bates completed 15 of 27 passes for 113 yards and added 27 yards on three carries.

Chamber of commerce seeks new leader The Bremerton Chamber of Commerce is turning a new page. The search for new leadership in the form of a President/ CEO is underway. Resumes are being accepted until 4 p.m. on September 12. Interested individuals can email them to knightannetta@gmail.com. Bremerton has a wonderful pool of talented individuals who have owned, participated in and helped grow a significant amount of business in the region. Nobody cares more about growing business in their own hometown than those individuals who have already had considerable stakeholder experience and/or have business and personal investments here. Having viewed the current job description available on the chamber website, I am concerned with the lack of any requirements for, let alone baseline recommendations about, educational background or marketing and economic experience. The Bremerton City Council is looking to approve the recommendations made by the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee. One of those recommendations is for the funding of $18,000 to the chamber to go towards its visitor center, marketing, website and mobile app. The individual that is going

to make those dollars stretch to their full potential for this community needs to know what they are doing and have proven they can already do it. Bremerton is at a tipping

Everything Bremerton

Colleen Smidt point where the right person in this position could make or break the small amount of positive momentum that has recently started to build. Two new hardware stores have just opened in two underserved locations of town. More than one new casual dining venue has recently opened and there is a soon-to-be-completed remodel of an existing hotel into a national chain establishment. What I would like to see going forward is a greater emphasis on the business growth for all of Bremerton, not just downtown. I’d also like to see an increase in the chamber’s

participation to assist with and provide new businesses coming in with any liaison services they need between themselves, their local vendors and any portion of the city process they may or may not be aware of. Examples include licensing, code compliance, pre-construction or pre-move-in planning. It is one thing to draw businesses in, it is quite another to ensure that they have a good experience to talk about that will encourage others to join. The continuation of events and programs that both benefit and add value to the community such as Eggs and Issues, parades and the promotion of community events are critical to keeping a strong chamber going. What I don’t want to see is special promotion and advertising privileges for some business districts and not others. All legal and licensed businesses that operate within the existing boundaries of the City of Bremerton are important and critical to the overall economic engine. There should be no picking of winners and losers here. Exposure, support and promotional enthusiasm can and should be the same for a business with a downtown Fourth Avenue address as it is for one with a Callow Avenue or a Wheaton Way address.

LETTER:

Story, photo placement was insensitive I feel compelled to comment on the mistake you clearly made on your Sept. 5 front page. Placing the story and headline for Jenise Wright’s funeral below the unrelated photo of a happy little girl on a water slide is absolutely a bad move. I cannot understand how this insensitive piece of journalism slipped past your editorial process. This is inexcusable bad taste and probably caused significant emotional trauma to the Wright family if they had the unfortunate luck to see this, which they no doubt did, just as I have. I don’t know what your paper can do to fix this but you really need to make an attempt and you’d better be very careful to prevent any further harm. A very conspicuous public apology on your next front page might be a start. David C. Dougherty East Bremerton

Editor’s note: Jenise Wright’s funeral was an important story that warranted placement on the front page. However, it is clear that the story could have been presented differently on the page to separate it from an unrelated photo. The Bremerton Patriot and Central Kitsap Reporter apologize for any stress that may have been caused to the Wright family and friends.

A chirping fire alarm tests patience

I knew this day would eventually come, but I always thought it would be while Dustin was on deployment. Every morning while Dustin was away, I’d wake up and stare at the faint, blinking light on the fire alarm, fixed to the highest point of the vaulted ceiling above our bed, and wonder, “How will I replace that battery when it dies?” The blink seemed to taunt me. Often I imagined that its pattern had quickened. (Did this mean the battery was low?) Then, just as suddenly, the blink would slow down again. (And what exactly did that mean?) As far as I could tell, if the battery died while Dustin was away, the only reasonable solution would be for me and the kids to move to a hotel until he got back. That’s how much I feared the fire alarm in the vaulted ceiling. Because you know what happens when a fire-alarm battery dies: it chirps as erratically as it used to blink, and always in the middle of the night. The chirping continues until the battery is replaced, and for an alarm on a vaulted ceiling above a bed, that involves moving furniture and getting a 6-foot ladder. So I watched, and I waited. But the battery never died while Dustin was gone. It died last week when Dustin was home and waiting to do a Fantasy Football draft. We heard the first chirp while we were in the kitchen.

Navy Wise

Sarah Smiley I prayed that it was coming from the hallway or the basement. Those alarms are easy to fix. But the faintness of the sound made my cheeks turn cold: the chirp was coming from upstairs. It’s always hard to find the chirp once it begins. The sound is so quick and seems to come from all directions at once. One person is

positive it’s coming from a bedroom; another is sure it’s coming from the basement. And so begins a dance that would confuse any extraterrestrial aliens spying on us more than our habit of following four-legged animals with a plastic bag full of excrement. Everyone runs to where they think the sound is coming from. Then, when the chirp happens again, they run to a new spot. And they wait, staring at the ceiling. Chirp! Everyone changes places again. Suddenly I heard Dustin’s voice coming from upstairs: “Oh no. Not that one.” It was important that I got our youngest son to bed so that he’d be asleep and less distracting when Dustin did his Fantasy Baseball draft. So I

cheerfully offered to take care of that while Dustin figured out the fire alarm. Except, Lindell’s room is directly across from ours, so the commotion of the chirps plus the clanking of the metal ladder and the sound of Dustin moving furniture was in the periphery as I read aloud a calming bedtime story. “And then Flat Stanley

became as flat as a pancake,” I said, flipping the page. Chirp. Clank. Squeak. Dustin came very close to saying not-so-nice words under his breath as he teetered on the top step o f the ladder and tried to See reach the more on our fire alarm.

Former PTA prez sentenced

BY KEVAN MOORE KMOORE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

David Michael Navarro, 38, a former Puget Sound Naval Shipyard employee and Belfair Elementary School PTA president, was sentenced Sept. 8 in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to 23 years in prison and lifetime of supervised release for four child pornography offenses, announced U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan.

Navarro was arrested in August 2013, after investigators traced a video posted on the internet to him. The video showed the rape of an 8-yearold child. Navarro pleaded guilty in April 2014 to two counts of production of child pornography, one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. At sentencing U.S. District Judge Benjamin H. Settle said,

“it is almost impossible to conjure up any offense more serious than what you’ve done. Words don’t exist in the English language to describe this. Your sentence pales in comparison to the lifetime of nightmares and psychological harm your victims will suffer.” “This defendant is a dangerous sexual predator,” said Durkan. “He preyed on children in a horrific fashion, even recording the sexual assault of

a child in the hallway of an elementary school after a PTA event. We are safer because of this much deserved prison sentence.” According to the facts in the plea agreement, between November of 2011 and May of 2013, Navarro produced multiple videos of himself raping and molesting a young child. Some of the videos seized from the defendant also showed a second young victim, and one video depicted Navarro engaged in sexually explicit conduct while seated next to an unidentified child

on an airplane. Law enforcement analysis revealed more than 700 images of child pornography and 157 videos of child pornography on Navarro’s electronic devices including cameras, computers, thumb drives, and smartphones. Navarro admits that he shared much of the child pornography he produced over the Internet, trading for other images of child pornography. Investigators also found videos showing Navarro masturbating in public and taking surreptitious photos aimed at

women’s underwear in various public settings such as school libraries or at a car repair shop. The people victimized in the photos were unaware Navarro was engaged in lewd conduct. The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marci Ellsworth. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by DOJ.

School boards update student medical policies BY RICHARD D. OXLEY ROXLEY@CENTRALKITSAPREPORTER.COM

Local school district’s are giving an initial thumbs up to policy changes for student medical treatment. The Bremerton Board

Religious days off added The Bremerton School District’s Board of Education also reviewed a policy update for staff. In accordance with state law, school staff will now be able to request two non-paid days off to “observe their religious traditions, or to attend to their matters of conscience,” according to the policy. The employee must request the days off in writing up to two weeks prior to the time off.

of Education reviewed three policies — two new and one revision — at its Sept. 4 meeting. The Central Kitsap School Board discussed its own version on Sept. 10. All were addressed to ensure that local policies are in line with state law. “Once the legislature makes decisions about what school districts needs to do, the Washington State School Directors Association puts it into language that school districts can use,” said Patty Glaser, Bremerton S chool District community relations. It was such language being reviewed. The Central Kitsap School District’s Board of Education reviewed policy 3416, which outlines the district’s stance on student medication on school grounds. The policy proposes that parents sign a permission form to allow a designated staff member to administer medication that must

be taken during the day. Medication that is injected will only be allowed under life-threatening circumstances. Bremerton’s board broke the matter down into three policies. Sept. 4 was the first reading of each policy item for the board. Each was forwarded on to a second reading. Policies 3419 and 3420 each deal with students’ ability to self-administer medication for asthma and allergic emergencies; medication such as an inhaler or an EpiPen. “It would allow them to administer their medication themselves,’ said Special Services Supervisor John Grant to the board on Sept. 4. “They would have to demonstrate to the nurse that they are competent.” Board member David Rubie commented that he would like to look into making the policy more open to other medications. “Is there a way to loos-

en up so some students can have a cough drop?” Rubie said. “As a parent and a board member I find it kind of ridiculous that we can allow this but not an aspirin or a cough drop. I’m all for doing this, but I think we need to open up the policy to some common sense.” The board also forwarded along an alteration to a “Medical Treatment” policy 3418, initially adopted in 1983 then revised and affirmed three times since. It is proposed to be renamed

“Response to Student Injury.” Three paragraphs have been removed from the original, shortening the nearly page-long policy to less than half of a page. Glaser said that such revisions are often the result of making policy language more simple. “They say the same thing in fewer words,” Glaser said. “Or sometimes they change the policy to less language and the procedures will be more prescriptive. They say ‘here’s the policy

and it’s up to the school district, locally, to determine what kinds of procedures will be in place.’” The district’s response to student injury policy now states that schools are responsible for providing first aid or emergency treatment in case of injury or illness of a student, but further nonemergency medical attention is the responsibility of the parent. It also states that the school will notify parents of an injury as soon as possible.

So I asked him if he wanted to do it.” The pair have been training for since April, first in swimming pools and then in nearby lakes — Wildcat Lake, Haven Lake, Wye Lake and Horseshoe Lake. Balant didn’t think twice about the swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco. She was a competitive swimmer in high school when she attended Central Kitsap High. She was a member of the Olympic Aquatic Club and shared lanes with Nathan Adrian. Her father, on the other hand, did think twice. “I’ve swam Lake Washington,” he said. “And I swam on a high-school

Both Mike and Kathleen say that Hale’s Ales is not through with Kitsap, however. They would like to open another Hale’s Ales in the area, perhaps in a more favorable location and with a more friendly pub vibe. “We’ll regroup. We know a lot more now than we did when we opened this pub,” Kathleen said. “It is my hope that we will

team back in Iowa. I wasn’t sure about this one, but I don’t like being the cheerleader. I like being in the game.” So the next day he told her he was going to do it. “Some people might think I’m a foolish old man,” he said. “But it gives me great pleasure to share experiences with my daughter.” In fact, they’ve done many dad-daughter dates before, including a trip to Graceland for his 50th birthday, and a night of “ghost hunting” at Bremerton Community Theatre. “It was just us two,” he said of the theater. “We got our pop and popcorn and watched her favorite movie, ‘The Ghost and Mr. Chicken’ in the lobby. Then, after the movie, we turned off the lights, explored the theatre and took pictures.”

The swim itself is about a mile and a half. It’s an organized swim with spotter boats and emergency personnel to help swimmers who get in trouble. More than 100 swimmers are expected to give it a try on Sunday. Waterbury thinks it will take him longer to make the distance than it will his daughter. Balant plans to make the distance in about 45 minutes to an hour. Both of them plan to wear wet suits. Balant swam the 200 meter individual medley and the 100 meter butterfly in high school. Her method is to do eight to 10 stokes underwater with her eyes closed and then look up and forward to see if she’s headed in the right direction. Swimming the outlines of nearby lakes helped them to

get used to different wakes and motion in the water. And neither of them are worried about sharks. “There are sharks in San Francisco Bay, but they mostly stay on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge,” said Waterbury, who is an events planner for the Kitsap County Parks Department. “To be honest, I’m more worried about how cold the water is and getting hypothermia.” In fact, if a swimmer isn’t done within two hours, they are expected to go to shore in a spotter boat. The currents where they will be swimming are strong and choppy because they are coming across from Japan, hitting the California Coast, Waterbury said. “There’s only so much time you can be in water like that,” he said.

be able to open another Hale’s pub, a smaller one, more similar to the one in Seattle. This one was more of a restaurant than a cozy little pub. It was larger, much too large to get that atmosphere. It’s a beautiful place, but not really pub-ish.” Despite the much-tolarge site, the Silverdale locale did garner a steady flow of loyal customers, though not enough to keep it afloat, Mike said. For the loyals, Hale’s Ales is throwing a party on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. with discounted meals, giveaways of memorabilia, raffles, $3 beers, free appetizers and other attractions to show its appreciation of customers. to fill the space they are vacating. Mike, however, feels that the location is more apt for a large chain restaurant, as opposed to small, local pubs like theirs. Until Hale’s Ales returns to Kitsap, local fans can get their fix at other area pubs, bars and

watering holes. “You can find us at Anthony’s (in Bremerton),” Mike said. “We’re at several places in Poulsbo like The Loft, Tizley’s, Hare and Hounds, and places on Bainbridge Island, Kingston and Port Orchard.”

Jonathan Adviento. Navy Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Jonathan Adviento, from Silverdale, enlisted in the Navy on April 6, 2010. After boot camp, he completed naval

arm. His current prognosis indicates that, at best, he will recover only 70 percent functionality. After his accident, he was enrolled in Navy Wounded Warrior — Safe Harbor, the Navy and Coast Guard’s support program for seriously wounded, ill and injured service members and their families. Before his injury, he was very active, enjoying “wallyball” (volleyball in a racquetball court), ultimate Frisbee, and rifle and pistol shooting. He currently is pursuing an internship through Operation Warfighter, and determined to remain active, he has become involved in adaptive athletics — sports that are modified to meet

the needs of ill and injured individuals. Adviento has been selected to compete on the U.S. team headed to London for the inaugural Invictus Games, an adaptive athletics event for wounded warriors from 14 countries. The event will take place Sept. 10-14, and it is Adviento’s second — and largest — adaptive athlet-

ics competition to date. He will participate in archery and sitting volleyball. “I love any opportunity to connect with other cul-

Auction has lots of supporters BY LESLIE KELLY LKELLY@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Debbie Hill and Kay Hill Cook can’t recall who it was that told them they needed to attend the Kathleen Sutton Fund Auction. But several years ago they did. “It was a really nice event that a friend of a friend said we should go to and be a part of,” said Debbie Hill. “We went and we thought it was great. But we also thought they needed to have it in a larger place.” So the women suggested places in Poulsbo, but the organization’s founders weren’t sure about moving it from Kathleen Sutton’s home community of Kingston to Poulsbo. When the women suggested the Pavilion at Port Gamble, something clicked. “ViviAnn (Parnell of the organization) told me they couldn’t afford that,” Hill said. “So I told her I’d look into it.” Through some negotiating for a good fee and through volunteering to pay it, Hill and Hill Cook were able to convince the organization to move its annual charity auction to Port Gamble. And for the past several years, through their family business, Hill Moving, Debbie and Kay have paid the bill for renting the venue. “Without that, we’d be spending money on a venue that we now can spend helping those with cancer,” said Parnell. “They’ve been so supportive every year. They’ve helped out so much.” For more than 12 years, the Kathleen Sutton Fund (KSF), a nonprofit organization, has been providing assistance to women with female-related cancers who need financial help with travel expenses getting to and from treatment visits. Women living in Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap, and Mason counties are eligible for assistance from the Kathleen Sutton Fund based on financial need.

Each October, KSF volunteers host the annual fundraiser which includes both a live and silent auction to help raise money. “The auction proceeds are vital to helping women and their families in a time of extreme difficulty, distress and financial worry,” said Parnell. “Since its inception in 2003, the Kathleen Sutton Fund has provided assistance to more than 700 women in these counties, and has raised over $300,000. Last year’s auction was the highest ever, raising more than $47,000.” Parnell was a close friend of Sutton, who died in 2004 after a battle with breast cancer. From 1998 until 2004, Sutton underwent treatment for breast cancer in Seattle. Ask Parnell explained, a network of friends cherished their time with her as they drove her to many of her appointments. As they went back and forth from Sutton’s home, they realized the enormous financial burden for travel associated with cancer care. “These expenses are not covered by insurance and significantly added to the overall cost of treatment,” said Parnell. Upon Sutton’s death, Parnell started the fund in honor of her friend. “It seems impossible to believe that we have women right here in our own communities who give up on treatment for their cancer, not because they can’t afford the treatment but because they don’t have the money to fill their car with gas or take the ferry to their chemo appointment,” Parnell said. “For some women, it can be as much as $100 a trip, and they have to make 20, 30 or 40 trips over the course of their treatment. That is why we have Kathleen Sutton Fund.” Hill Cook said that at the first auction she attended, a young man came up to her and thanked her for being there. “It was Kathleen’s son,” she said. “I didn’t know him,

but he introduced himself. I just thought to myself, his mother must have been some special woman to have all these friends and family want to do this in her honor. I told him he should be very proud of his mother. “ Hill Moving, which is a independent familyrun moving van line, has operated in Kitsap County since July 1986. The company supports a number of local charities, including the YWCA Alive Shelter in Bremerton and the Kitsap Humane Society. “We’re part of the community,” said Hill. “We believe in the community because we live and work here. What happens here affects us and that’s why we do our part.” She added, “Plus we get a kick out of it.” Hill Cook echoed that. “It’s a great way to celebrate someone who meant to much to many people,” she said. “If I were sick, I’m not sure I’d have friends who’d go to the mat like that for me. She must have been a wonderful woman.” Sutton lived in Shine on the Olympic Peninsula, worked in Kingston and was a well-respected businesswoman. She served as president of the Kingston Chamber of Commerce, organized the annual July 4th parade, and was a volunteer to many events. This year’s auction will be on Saturday Oct. 4, at the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion in Port Gamble from 4 to 7 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www. kathleensutton.org for $20 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, dessert and a beverage. Purchase tickets in advance and there will be no waiting to enter the event. Among the items at the auction is a vacation destination to Mexico. Go to www.kathleensutton.org or email ksfund12@ gmail.com for more information. Auction organizers are still looking for sponsors and items for the auction.

He is fully aware of the future that typewriters face. “(Computers) are the replacement,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere along the line we still end up with a guy who has to hit a key to come up with something. Now, that may end up being something you can stick in your back pocket.” Two younger gentlemen often come into his shop to learn repair skills, but Montgomery said typewriter repair will continue to wane. “Eventually, it will be abandoned,” he said. “I think it will last another 10 or 15 years. But I think there’s enough curiosity with these machines that we are going to end up with people who will learn how to fix them for no other reason than it’s there.”

The typewriter enjoyed

nearly a century as the go-to machine for composing documents and more. There are pockets of users that still rely upon them, such as some of Kitsap’s police departments, or correctional facilities across the nation. “There’s a firm of lawyers in Bremerton — there’s five lawyers and eight or nine secretaries — and every one of their desks has a typewriter,” Montgomery said of one of his local customers. “A typical place has a computer, a printer and one of these typewriters sitting over there,” he said. “Almost every legal office has at least one or more typewriters sitting out where somebody can type on it.” There is also a cult of typewriter admirers that keep them in use. “There’s a lot of people who, for some reason, are interested and are buying these old typewriters,” Montgomery said. “I’m running into people that bought a typewriter because it’s old. I get them in here to clean them up.” Actor Tom Hanks is known for his love of the machines. Hanks recently

released his own app that simulates the typewriting experience on devices such as iPads and iPhones. Authors such as Danielle Steele and Tom Wolfe are also known to continue writing their works on typewriters. Others endeavor to merge the old with the new. Qwerkywriter ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund production of its 84-key USB/ Bluetooth typewriterstyle computer keyboard. Typists can also modify their old typewriter to work with their computer with help from www. usbtypewriter.com. The website sells kits that will allow manual typewriters to work with computers. This way, authors can write on paper as well as the screen.

Typewriter

Continued from page 3 machines when I was in grade school,” he said. Montgomery was first in charge of putting the ribbon on the typewriters. He learned more complex repairs, but he didn’t initially want to make it a career. “I had no intention of being a repairman,” Montgomery said. “I really didn’t get seriously involved with fixing typewriters until I got out of the Army.” He was drafted into the Army during World War II. But wherever he was stationed, he didn’t get too far with a gun. Rather, it was another skill that set him apart. “I kept getting steered into it,” Montgomery said of typewriter repair. “It

was one of these, ‘Oh, you know how to fix one of these machines? How do you fix this part?’ ” There was the time he went to Camp Beale, California. “They literally grabbed me by the collar and said, ‘Here’s your repair shop,’ ” he said. Then there was England, where he got a brief break from typewriters. “I spent almost 10 days as a purchasing agent for Army headquarters,” he said. “But it wasn’t why I came to them in the first place. I came to them to fix typewriters.” Then Versailles, and then Frankfurt, making sure military communications typed smoothly. Kitsap lacked a steady repairman at the end of the war, so he thought it was a good place to set up

shop with his father. His business was strictly local at first. “By 1955 some of the old-timers were getting to old to do it anymore,” Montgomery said. “I’ve been getting (customers) from out-oftown which I didn’t use to,” he said. “I’m the only one around basically still working on these things. There is a guy in south Tacoma, there’s a fellow with an Olympia address, and there’s a fellow with a Lake Oswego address in Oregon.” Now, across the shelves of his repair shop are various models awaiting customers to pick them up from Seattle, Tacoma, Federal Way and beyond.

The modern era

Montgomery remains at the keyboard — behind it, under it, and where ever

he needs to be to get the decades-old machines to click like new. He continues to go to work five days a week. He can spryly talk up a storm, pulling from 93 years worth of memories and prized typewriter knowledge. Montgomery sees IBM Selectrics most often these days, he said. “It’s tricky to repair and — oh, boy — if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can really get it screwed up in a hurry,” Montgomery said. “But it works and doesn’t give a lot of trouble. If you got somebody that can type 150 words a minute, by golly, it will do it.” He has also seen quite a few Underwood No. 5 models pass through his shop recently. First sold in 1900, it was the most successful typewriter of its day and set an industry

standard, Montgomery affectionately notes. “It worked,” Montgomery said. “I mean that if you were used to typing 130 words a minute, that crazy Model 5 will do it. You get an old Remington of that age and if you’re doing 35 words per minute, then you’re doing fine.” There’s something to be said for a machine that works, like the No. 5. It’s complex, yet simple. It’s seen the last century of social change, wars and technology pass by. It’s been depended upon to carry the thoughts and

discourse of American life from offices, homes and on the road. And for some, it still is. “I think there are just people that are fascinated with typewriters, like this one,” Montgomery said, pointing to a Underwood No. 5. “It’s nearly 100 years old.” “I’ve been taking them apart since I was about an 8-year-old kid,” he added. “There’s just something about the way this thing is built.”

ON THE COVER The keyboard of an Underwood No. 5 currently under repair at Bremerton Office Machine, Co. Montgomery said he has been seeing a lot more of the historic model, which is more than 100 years old. Richard D. Oxley photo

Poulsbo’s thriving family of ospreys is a familiar sight on the Strawberry Field light tower as the parents regularly drop fish into the nest for their two growing fledglings. It’s comical to watch the youngsters dive for fish in the nearby pond. They sometimes end up going for a swim. The parents will continue patiently feeding them while they master their fishing skills; but it’s serious business for the juveniles. They won’t survive the winter without those skills. Ospreys are also called seahawks, and many sports teams are named for them, including our own Seattle Seahawks. These popular birds are loved and protected around the world. Communities erect nesting platforms to keep the birds from harm, such as electrocuting themselves on power distribution poles and transformers,

Time may be running short for ‘Whit’s End’ BY KATIE SHAW Kitsap Week

fter a long day at work, Poulsbo resident Lyle Prouse loves to return to his sanctuary, a slice of the Liberty Bay coast on Fjord Drive. He makes his home in a small trailer, but the long stretch of beach makes up for any cramped space. The trailer Prouse rents has been on the property since 1952, when it was placed by owner John Whitford. He and his wife and three children lived in the 900-square-foot trailer until 1962, said Whitford’s son Reagan, who handles the property’s affairs now that his father has passed. “It’s been sitting there for [62] years,” Whitford said. “Anybody that’s lived in Poulsbo knows the place.” Prouse and Whitford have been friends since they were in first grade together, and used to come from Bremerton, where they both lived, to “Whit’s End” — John Whitford’s name for the Poulsbo property. “[Reagan’s] old man would bring us out here and usually we’d have to whack bushes or do some kind of manual labor, and then we’d go for a swim and hang out,” Prouse recalled. Now 52, Prouse has lived at “Whit’s End” since June 2012. He commutes to South Kitsap to teach during the school year and, during summer, to Tacoma for a part-time job. “That’s the cool thing [about living here]: the simple pleasure of coming home from work and being able to sit on the bulkhead with a cool

drink and watch the boats go by, watch the sunset,” Prouse said. “Get hot, dive in the water, cool off. It’s like a little sanctuary.” Fjord Drive is a popular road for joggers, walkers and bikers, and on the other side of the house, paddle-boarders, wakeboarders and kayakers frequent the bay. Prouse enjoys the social aspect of his location.

Being a science teacher, Prouse also enjoys the wildlife. An osprey nests in a tree in his backyard and fishes in the bay alongside seals and otters. In summer 2013, Prouse found a seal dead on the beach, and he took pictures of the decomposition process for his science class. Inside the trailer are two small rooms connect-

Washington’s oldest winery continues to shine

R

unning the Northwest’s largest winery is daunting. Simultaneously crafting some of our region’s best wines is downright difficult. That’s what Chateau Ste. Michelle manages to do year after year, and its latest releases show no signs of cutting corners in quality as it continues to grow in size. Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington’s flagship winery. Its roots run deep, going back to the repeal of Prohibition. In 1934, two wineries — Pommerelle and National Wine Co. — began, and they were fierce rivals until Pommerelle bought out Nawico prior to World War II. By the 1950s, they merged, and in the 1960s, the first Ste. Michelle wines hit the market. With the opening of a grand chateau in the eastern King County community of Woodinville in 1976, the winery was rechristened Chateau Ste. Michelle. Today, head winemaker Bob Bertheau oversees a team that spans the state, with white wines made in Woodinville and red wines made at the winery’s Canoe Ridge Estate winemaking facility in the remote southern Horse Heaven Hills overlooking the Columbia River. Here are some of Ste. Michelle’s latest releases. For the most part, they are broadly distributed and should not be difficult to find at groceries and wine retailers throughout the West and across the nation. ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Riesling, Columbia Valley, $10: This medium-dry Riesling starts with aromas of Granny Smith apple, lemongrass and white pepper. The entry to the palate is juicy with apple and ripe

pear flavors, backed by lemon pepper. (12 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Harvest Select Sweet Riesling, Columbia Valley, $10: Pretty aromas of rosewater, pineapple and peach give way to flavors of lush tropical fruits, backed by Honeycrisp apple, Bartlett pear and a souk spice market. (10.5 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Columbia Valley, $11: This is bone-dry in a style that’s tremendous with fresh, regional cuisine. Grassy aromas include sweet lime, lemon juice and white pepper. That green and grassy theme continues on the palate with Granny Smith apple, lime peel and slate, backed by brisk acidity. (11 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2012 Canoe Ridge Estate Chardonnay, Horse Heaven Hills, $25: Notes of melon, apple and dusty pear include a faint hint of minerality often found in wines from this region. The elegant structure on the palate presents more orchard fruit and a sense of grassiness amid the mild oak tones and richness on the midpalate from surlie aging. (14.8 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2012 Ethos Reserve Chardonnay, Columbia Valley, $36: There’s a fair bit of oak in the aromas, along with baked bread, lemon, green banana and clove. It’s rich and round on the palate with up-front butterscotch and orchard fruit flavors. (14.5 percent alcohol)

■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2011 Cold Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $30: Aromas of purple fruit hint at blackberry and boysenberry, backed by black licorice. Inside comes a creamy entry of dark plums, dried cherry and sweet blackberry. (14.5 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2011 Canoe Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $28: This wine’s smoky, savory, spicy and chocolaty nose could be mistaken for a Syrah, and there’s pleasure on the palate with tones of rich Marionberry and chocolate-covered cherry. (14.5 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2011 Ethos Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $48: Opulence oozes from aromas that feature black cherry, dark plum and crushed herbs along with hints of barrel influence with brown sugar, clove, cocoa powder and coconut. The flavors are bold with currant and plum amid a sturdy, yet integrated, structure. (14.5 percent alcohol) ■ Chateau Ste. Michelle 2011 Ethos Reserve Syrah, Columbia Valley, $50: Oak lovers will dig this Syrah, which features aromas of dark toast, blackberry, candied blueberry and hints of charcuterie followed by bold and brawny flavors with a theme of roasted coffee, boysenberry and blueberry. (14.9 percent alcohol) — Eric Degerman and Andy Perdue run Great Northwest Wine, a news and information company. Learn more about wine at www.greatnorthwestwine. com.
