Pierce Transit, Tacoma Musical Playhouse among business award nominees Posted online Weds., Sept. 3 The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber has announced the finalists for the 2014 Spotlight! On Business Awards. The annual honorific recognizes Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber member businesses that have set the standard for exemplary business practices in seven categories: small business (1-25 employees); medium business (26-50 employees); large business (51+ employees); non-profit organization; minority-owned business; veteran-owned business; and supporter of the military (sponsored by Harborstone Credit Union). The field of finalists was narrowed down to 35 from a list of 70 nominees. The recipients of the 2014 Spotlight! On Business Awards will be announced during a luncheon ceremony on Weds., Sept. 24, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., at Hotel Murano, located at 1320 Broadway Plaza, in downtown Tacoma. Suspicious fire damages Tacoma office building Photo Courtesy Tacoma Fire Department Tacoma firefighters from seven stations responded to reports of a commercial structure fire on Tacoma's East side at approximately 7:01 a.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring out of a single-story office building on the site of a rental storage business located in the 1400 block of East 44th Street. There were no injuries to report. The fire resulted in approximately $62,500 in damages to the building and its contents, according to Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Joe Meinecke. Meinecke noted the cause of the fire was determined to be intentionally set, and the incident was referred to the Tacoma Police Department for further investigation.
