A flare-up over a mural planned for a retention wall on American Legion property has pitted the legion post against the Town Council with no compromise in sight. In an interview at the Journal office Thursday, American Legion Post 163 Commander Shannon Plummer said the legion was not suing Friday Harbor, but simply following the town’s rules to appeal a council decision. Mayor Carrie Lacher was contacted by phone Thursday, but said
she and the council members have been advised to not comment on the issue by the city attorney, Paul Elsner of the Portland, Ore. firm Beery, Elsner & Hammond. Questions were emailed to City Administrator Duncan Wilson and Land Use Administrator Mike Bertrand. Answers were not received by the press deadline. The council voted 4-1 May 15 against the legion’s request for a conditional-use permit to paint a 1,200 square foot mural on legion’s retention wall.
