Republicans not panicking after finishing second in House races By DANNIE OLIVEAUX Editor
Despite finishing second behind Democrat Nathan Schlicher in the Aug. 5 primary election, State Rep. Jesse Young is optimistic about his changes of winning in the November general election. Young, a Republican who was appointed to fill Jan Angel’s unexpired term in the House in February, received 12,346 votes (38.1 percent) to Schlicher’s 15,262 (47.1), as of the 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 Secretary of State results. Schlicher, an emergency medicine
doctor, served as the district’s senator in 2013 before losing to Angel in the November election. Republican Bill Scheidler, a political activist, got 4,797 votes or 14.8 percent of the 32,405 votes cast. “I didn’t expect Bill (Scheidler) to do as well as he did, but I think there is a certain tenant that a lot of people are touching,” said Young. “Maybe they don’t know that I am a brand-new incumbent. There is always going to be an anti-incumbent vote when you are in a depressed economic environment like this.” Young said it’s a “clear victory” if he

adds Scheidler’s votes to his. “This is almost a five-point spread,” said Young. “For someone who is brand new and given all the money that my opponent had spent in his race last year and the monetary advantages he has now, a five-point spread when you add those Republican votes to mine is a huge victory. I’m pretty excited.” Schlicher was confident about his first-place showing.
Prosecuting Attorney Russ Hauge and criminal defense attorney Tina Robinson are the apparent top vote-getters in the Aug. 5 primary and advance to the general election in the race for Kitsap County prosecuting attorney. According to the Kitsap County Auditor Elections Office website, 154,069 ballots were mailed out; 49,068 were received for a turnout thus far of 31.8 percent. The elections office reported all 209 precincts were counted, in one race, the final result — could change. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Hauge had 17,907 votes (37.9 percent) to Robinson’s 15,269 (32.3). In Washington’s primary system, the top two vote-getters regardless of party advance to the general election. Hauge is a Democrat, Robinson

Downtown Port Orchard could see more than 20,000 people attending the 27th annual Saints Car Club Cruz and Festival By The Bay, hosted by Fathoms o’ Fun. Fathoms Event Director Bob Morehouse said more than 60 vendors are scheduled for this year’s festival. “There should be about 20 new vendors this year.” said Morehouse. “All of the vendors will be setup from 6-8 p.m.” Morehouse said Bay Street, from Cline to Harrison, will be closed off to vehicles from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Food, crafts, a pony rides, sale and informational booths, along with activities and games will be on Bay Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last year, more than 500 classic cars and trucks rolled into the downtown area. The classics will be lined up on the waterfront parking lot and along the northern portion of Frederick and Sidney avenues, off Bay Street. Ron Weeks, of the Saints Car Club, said there will be shuttle available by Kitsap Transit from the National Guard Armory on Mile Hill Drive to Peninsula Feed on Harrison, and from the Kitsap County Courthouse to Port Orchard City Hall. The shuttles will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Aug. 9, from 5-7 p.m., the seventh annual Mopar CackleFest will be held in the Hi-Joy Bowl parking lot on Bethel Road. The cars will start their engine at 7 p.m. Free hot dogs and beverages will be served, also. Individuals can bowl a game and rent shoes for $1 each.
