Whidbey crews fighting Carlton wildfire

Five North Whidbey Fire and Rescue firefighters traveled last week to help battle the Carlton Complex Fire in north-central Washington.

The Carlton Complex Fire is now the largest wildfire in Washington state history, having affected 336 square miles, as of Saturday.

The fire was ignited on July 14 after lightning strikes started a few smaller fires that ultimately merged into one.

“It’s important for us to hold events like this to show the public the full gamut of what we do at NAS Whidbey Island,” said Public Affairs Officer Mike Welding.

Hangar 5, known as “Haviland Hangar,” is named in memory of Cmdr. William Haviland, the second commanding officer of the air station, according to Tony Popp, community relations assistant for the base.

County commissioners clash over island-wide bike trail

A portion of a Freeland trail project was removed from the county’s Capital Improvement Plan Monday.

The change was made despite calls by South Whidbey Commissioner Helen Price Johnson to keep it in the plan.

Island County Board of Commissioners voted 2-1

to remove phase II of the Freeland trail project during Monday’s regular session.

Price Johnson said Monday she was “disappointed” that her fellow commissioners could not see the value of the piece of trail that would eventually contribute to an island-long bike and walking trail.

“There is a high priority for me to continue to create a path that goes from the ferry

to the bridge,” said Price Johnson during discussion at Wednesday’s work session.

“That’s not going to happen overnight. It’s going to happen in pieces and these are two really important pieces for my community.”

Newly appointed Commissioner Aubrey Vaughan cast the deciding vote to remove the project.

Vaughan said his main concern is the one-third acre

property adjacent to the trail owned by Island Transit that remains undeveloped.

Public Works Director Bill Oakes said that Island Transit wants the property to be developed into a transit station as part of the islandlong trail, but does not have a firm construction plan. But they have not abandoned the project, Oakes said.

sented, Vaughan said, the commissioners could reconsider returning the Freeland trail project to the Capital Improvement Plan.

“I like phase II, but I want to know more about it,” Vaughan said.

The project would cost more than $1 million in state transportation funds with Island County’s contribution at roughly $135,000.

Commissioner Jill Johnson said that while she says “Yes” to many of these types of projects, the cost of this project crosses the line. Johnson said she agrees with Vaughan that the trail project should come after the transit station is built.

Johnson said she doesn’t share Price Johnson’s priority for an island-wide trail and knows people who talk about it “with an eyeroll.”

“I’m not huge fan of the million-dollar Freeland trail,” Johnson said Monday. “I don’t need a trail to nowhere.

I’m not supportive of the concept. It’s only multimodal if transit connects to it.”

Price Johnson said that the trail has enough value to her community without the transit station.

“I don’t believe my colleagues understand the

nature of that area,” Price Johnson said. “There is more than just the transit station it connects with it. Those communities would be using that trail both for pedestrian and for bicycles. I think it’s a false dilemma you’re proposing. … Folks in Freeland are very excited about having this opportunity.”

The other project Price Johnson fought for was the feasibility study for a trail segment at Midvale Road and State Highway 525.

Vaughan, again casting the deciding vote, said that he is in favor of keeping the Midvale feasibility study in the Capital Improvement Plan.

The purpose of the study is to determine if the two small parcels, which include some wetlands, could be of public use as a trail.

The Gabelein family filed a petition for the county to relinquish, or vacate, the property’s right of way to them if a use cannot be found.

“That’s why the road vacation and that feasibility needs to be done,” Price Johnson said Wednesday. “We need to have that done to be able to answer that question at hearing about how feasible that property is.”

Festival to celebrate ‘relaxing’ herb with art, music and fun

Visitors can bask in the relaxing aroma of Mother Nature’s healing herb during Lavender Wind Farm’s 11th Annual Lavender Wind Festival.

The event is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the farm on Darst Road, north of Coupeville.

Attendees will have a chance to explore the farm, visit artist booths, listen to live music and enjoy refreshments.

In previous years, the event was often referred to as an “Artist Invasion,” but farm owner Sarah Richards said she wanted to bring back the original focus.

“This year the focus is more on lavender,” she said.

“There will be food from our own bakery — savory and sweet.”

The Pacific Northwest Art School will also be selling wine as an independent fundraiser.

There will also be plenty of activities for people of all ages.

“There will be a chance for people to make their own lavender wreath or wand and there will also be a free kids’ booth with activities,” Richards said.

Four artists or groups are slated to play from noon-4 p.m. both days.

Richards said that the entertainment will be a variety of styles, including the local

“It’s more easy listening,” she said. “Lavender is all about relaxing.”

Visitors can walk the lavender labyrinth while enjoying the view of Admiralty Inlet. They can also explore about a dozen artist booths, which include handmade baskets, watercolor paintings,

carpentry work, hand-blown glass, ceramics and more.

Lavender Wind Farm employees will be on-hand to demonstrate the distilling of essential oil from lavender.

Sailor aims to break pullup record

Navy Petty Officer Mike McCastle said he plans to feel some pain.

“It’s a little suffering for a good cause,” McCastle said Thursday. “Pain can impact the individual. People can relate to pain. What I will feel is only a fraction of what (wounded veterans) go through every day.”

McCastle will attempt to break the Guiness World Record for most pullups in a 24-hour period starting at 6 a.m. Saturday at Fort Nugent Park.

The purpose of this feat is to raise awareness and money to assist the Wounded Warrior Project, which supports programs and services for this generation of injured veterans and their families.

The event will also offer live music, vendors, a raffle and other activities to help raise awareness and donations.

McCastle’s goal is to raise $10,000.

Now an air traffic controller for Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, McCastle said he has been injured several times in his Navy career and knows what its like to “make that journey back to normal life.”

McCastle said he has been fortunate to make full recoveries from his injuries, but other servicemen and women are not so lucky.

“They have given life and limb, and they won’t ever be the same,” McCastle said.

McCastle has participated in a number of different fitness challenges for good causes, like running 30 miles last year to raise money for cancer research. McCastle

The current record for pullups in 24 hours is 4,030, set by Navy SEAL David Goggins.

McCastle’s plan has been to train for the fundraiser in the same way he trains for marathon, with some days more intensive than others.

He’s averaging 1,000 to 1,500 pullups a day, he said.

His technique during the event is to do roughly five pullups on the minute, allowing himself the last half of each minute to recover. This plan should net him roughly 300 pullups per hour, which should allow him to beat the record in roughly 14 hours.

McCastle was given permission to raise money for the nonprofit by Lolita Jerido,

community events manager for the national Wounded Warrior Project organization.

“Wounded Warrior Project empowers warriors with the tools essential to not just survive their injuries, but to thrive and achieve personal and professional success,” Jerido said in her acceptance letter. “With the help of individuals coming together in their communities, Wounded Warrior Project can strive to fulfill our vision of fostering the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.”

More than 47,000 servicemen and women have been injured in recent military conflicts. In addition to the physical wounds, it is estimated as many as 400,000 service members live with the invis-

ible wounds of war, including combat-related stress, major depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Another 320,000 are believed to have experienced a traumatic brain injury while on deployment, according to the Wounded Warrior Project.

“It’s not about the record,” McCastle said. “It’s not about the war. It’s about the warrior. This challenge will test my physical limits, but I will recover. Twenty-four hours of discomfort does not compare to the sacrifice our wounded service members and their families make every day.”

The Lt. Tom Costen and Lt. Charlie Turner Memorial Park is a sports field comprising baseball, soccer and football fields.

The park was named in the flyers’ honor after they were killed in January 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. They flew the A-6 Intruder, Popp said.

Those touring the base passed the Admiral Nimitz Hall, an accredited five-star dining facility that provides three square meals to the base’s active duty personnel.

Sailors may also venture next door to one of the base’s three fast-food options: McDonalds, Rice King or Subway.

The western edge of the base is also home to Cliffside RV park, a place where visiting active-duty personnel, veterans, retirees and Department of Defense employees can stay

holder” funding toward the fairgrounds was part of the larger discussion about the Capital Improvement Plan, which needed to move forward this week.

That plan will now go to the Island County Planning Commission for discussion and public comment.

Fair supporters released the $71,000 Island County Fairgrounds Master Plan earlier this year, which called for the demolition of about half the buildings.

The unpopular $10 million proposal would have turned the facility into an island event center over a 10-year period.

Commissioners, wanting to invest in a short-term solutions, have directed staff to reach out to the Port of South Whidbey, the parks district and the fair association to find out what it would take to put out a request for property management proposals.

The Whidbey firefighters, who received special training required by the state Department of Natural Resources to fight wildfires, were sent to help battle the wildfire because North Whidbey Fire and Rescue is a part of a regional “strike force,” according to the department’s chief, Marv Koorn.

According to Koorn, the department has two type-six engines, which are basically “brush trucks,” a command vehicle and five firefighters assigned to the strike team right now.

And this isn’t the first time the department has been out to fires in other areas.

Initiative 1325 had a single goal: to let the voters decide on a Constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds vote of the Legislature or majority vote of the people to raise taxes.

That policy should sound very familiar. Over the past 20 years, it’s been on the ballot five times and the voters passed it five times. The last time it was on the ballot, in 2012, it passed in all 39 counties and received more votes than any initiative in state history. An astonishing 1.9 million voters overwhelmingly approved its tougher-to-raisetaxes policy.

Nonetheless, our initiative this year, which would have allowed the voters to enshrine the two-thirds policy permanently in our state Constitution, didn’t qualify.

Does that mean the voters are now suddenly in favor of massive tax increases? Are voters salivating for a sky-high state income tax? Are they clamoring for household-budget-busting property tax increases? Job-killing business tax hikes? Regressive sales tax increases?

Of course not.

Not succeeding right away with an initiative policy is not unusual.

Over the past 16 years, we’ve often made several attempts on a broad array of issues: lowering car tab taxes — four attempts; limiting property taxes — four attempts; renewing Initiative 601’s fiscal policies — five attempts; improving transportation — three attempts; empowering the state auditor to conduct performance audits of government, protecting the initiative process; and others.

Opponent has opted to make campaign ‘ugly’ Editor, I believe a recent letter to the editor written by my opponent to the Whidbey News-Times distorts the truth for personal political gain rather than telling the whole story.

My opponent chose to pick a period in time to state there was a loss in an investment portfolio for Island County.

While there was a fair market value loss, it was not in the amount she stated, which was largely exaggerated. Her statements were also clearly a spin and not the whole truth.

The values of investments increase and decrease based on market conditions. It is the nature of investing.

As anyone who is knowledgeable in investing is aware, when you purchase an investment, there are inherent risks involved, interest-rate risk being one of them.

I wonder if my opponent would also tell individuals to never invest in the

stock market based on looking only at the years 2005-08.

People will say that you never lose money by putting it under the mattress. While that may be true, it’s not the whole truth because the opportunity to earn money was lost.

I could pick one or two of my best investments and tell you I got the highest returns ever. That may be true, but not the whole truth, because it does not look at all the investments.

Twisting the truth would go against everything I value.

The whole truth is that all investments I have made have met the guidelines of the Island County Investment Policy. All of them.

This policy sets the parameters under which funds are to be invested.

All investments were suitable for the portfolio and earn a marketable rate of interest. Furthermore, the Board of Island County Commissioners has trusted, and rightly so, that every purchase met the guidelines of the investment policy.

My opponent states that, if there were a gain in the portfolio, I would be tooting my own horn.

There were fair market value gains in the portfolio during the previous two years, and I refrained from con-

tacting the newspaper or announcing it on the radio.

That is not my way.

I was cautioned that this campaign could get “ugly.” It appears my opponent not only chose to get “ugly,” but also to resort to half truths, innuendos and outright lies to sway voters.

That appears to be her way.

The most important issue to me is that you can trust that your treasurer is telling you the whole truth. I have always been committed to that value.

I didn’t choose to run for office for glory or fame. Nor did I choose to seek another term to toot my own horn. That is not whom I am or whom I choose to be.

I chose to run because I know I have provided an environment wherein my staff and I have increased productivity via efficiencies created, decreased costs, provide exceptional customer service and are good stewards of the Island County’s funds entrusted to our care.

I love this job and I want to serve this community for four more years.

I humbly ask for your vote.

Partial recording is intended to mislead Editor, An Open Letter to Island County Residents: The ballots came out in the mail today, so primary election time is finally here.

I wish to make a comment and ask for support prior to you marking your choices on your ballot.

As it seems to be in any election cycle, there is always a great deal of misinformation put out about candidates, either by the media or opponents.

I want to ask that before you vote, you personally check the sources you are relying on to form an opinion.

What you read or hear is not always the entire truth.

A prime example is the “robo” call I received tonight from Anthony Wallace, Marc Hennemann’s campaign manager.

He states I support tax increases and even backs up his claim by playing a recording of an answer I gave to a question at the Board of Island County Commissioners interviews.

The only problem with his claim, and the recording, is that it is not played in its entirety. The

clip you hear is a partial answer, edited from my actual response to the question.

In the portion you hear played on the call, it appears I am advocating an increase in taxes. However, if you listen to the recording on the county’s website, you will hear me say that I would not support a tax increase unless all other avenues, including cuts elsewhere, were explored and exhausted, and then I would only support an increase if it were to be used for essential services.

So please, I urge you, vote responsibly. Do not take things at face value, as they are not always what they seem.

If you want to make a good decision in this primary election, check sources yourself, research who is whom and what their agendas truly are.

Then choose.

We only have one chance to get it right, so educate yourself.

I guess I could be deceitful myself in order to drum up votes.

However, my honor, selfrespect, personal integrity and name are worth more to me than that.

I only ask that you make informed decisions, and we will see who comes out on top.

If you really look into backgrounds, personal qualifications and vested interest in the community, then I believe you will make

Some were successful, some weren’t.

But that’s how it works. There’s never a straight line to success in anything, especially politics. What separates the winners from the losers is how they respond to setbacks.

Winners keep trying; losers give up.

The only reason we’ve succeeded for so long is, one, we’re very persistent and, two, the people have consistently demanded that tax increases must always be an absolute last resort.

We’re obviously disappointed in not qualifying our 2/3 Constitutional Amendment Initiative for the ballot. We wanted the citizens to have the chance to vote because we’re confident they’ll overwhelmingly support it.

Past elections and current polls prove it.

But since we didn’t qualify, our greatest concern now is that some in the state Legislature will say that our initiative’s nonqualification was actually the people endorsing the idea of higher taxes.

That would be a huge mistake.

Families are still struggling.

Businesses are too. These are tough times. State and local politicians must be constantly reminded that imposing higher taxes and fees will only make our bad economy worse.

No government has ever taxed itself to prosperity.

When it comes to political advocacy, there are lots of ups and downs.

The only way to survive and thrive is to embrace the grind and persevere. OBITUARIES Mary Genevieve Kehaulani

Kehaulani

Mar y Genevieve Kehaulani Ling passed away peacefully in Everett on Wednesday, July 16.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1938, “Aunty Ke” to most who knew her was the second eldest of 13 Children.

She is survived by her husband, Willard; children, Kina, Stuart and Napua; grandchildren, Owen, Pryor and

Parker; and, of course, all of her friends and family who loved her so much.

She and her husband left their family in Hawaii and moved their children to Japan in 1971. She built a new family by staying active in the Hawaiian Club. This ensured that her family could stay connected to their culture.

After Japan, they settled in Oak Harbor, Wash., in 1977.

She found joy and importance in gathering around the table, so there are many strong memories associated with food. When her children were young, she loved a sea-

food restaurant called Hope Island Inn. Her family were frequent patrons of Skipper’s “All you can eat” Tuesdays. A few weeks before her passing, she found herself presiding at the end of a large table at Claim Jumper, surrounded by family who had gathered from near and far to be with her and her husband, Willard.

During her 37 years living in Oak Harbor, she worked at two naval hospitals: at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and in Bremerton.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday,

July 24, at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Pluth, Celebrant.

Rites of Interment will follow in Hawaii at a later date.

Race the Reserve becomes community event

Race the Reserve, which returns Saturday, Aug. 9, is more than a fundraiser.

Yes, its primary function is to raise money for graduation activities for the Coupeville High School class of 2015, but it is also a community event that helps fill the void for runners that was left when the Whidbey Island Marathon dropped Coupeville from its route.

Elizabeth Bitting, a member of the Parents of CHS and director for this year’s Race the Reserve, enjoys running and said when the Whidbey Marathon finished in Coupeville, she was “in heaven.”

Once the marathon moved its finish line to Oak Harbor, Bitting said, there were rumblings in Central Whidbey on how to get Coupeville back on the running map.

“Then an opportunity arose,” Bitting said. “I was part of the parent group back then (2012), my son graduated that year, and I saw an opportunity to bring a half marathon back to Coupeville.”

That year the race was dubbed the Dash for the Bash and was held in October.

“The feedback was overwhelmingly good,” Bitting said.

The following year the race was moved to August, renamed Race the Reserve and added a 10K and 5K to its lineup.

The senior parents, Bitting said, adopted the philosophy, “If you build it, they will come.”

And come, they have. Race participation has grown each year. As of early July, over 100 runners had registered, and the group expects the usual rush of signups as the race nears and on race day.

The most difficult factor in putting the race together is its timing. The bulk of the work comes as race day approaches, and that comes in the summer when seniors and their parents, the nucleus expected to help run the race, are often out of town or involved in other activities.

“Access to the new seniors is very limited,” Bitting said.

“Emailing and Facebook have helped us tremendously in getting in contact with our new seniors.”

“The race is evolving,” Bitting said. “Without the community and their sponsorship and support, this would not happen from year to year. Our community has been so welcoming of this run that we have set an additional goal of giving back. We will be giving a donation to The Friends of Ebey.”

The funds raised will provide safe and sober graduation activities for CHS seniors.

“The last week of school for the seniors is full of what we hope will be memorable experiences: senior assembly, senior awards night, senior parade, senior breakfast and senior night,” Bitting said. “The Parents of CHS want to give these seniors a safe environment to create lasting memories and to act as a last sendoff. This will be the last opportunity for many of the seniors to spend time with one another before heading off in their own directions.”

Since the run falls on the same weekend as the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival, Bitting said, race organizers tell those who register to “come for the run but stay for the fun.”

Legion team just misses state trip Island golfers shine over weekend After recording three consecutive upsets, the Oak Harbor Legion baseball team lost 7-6 to Anacortes in eight innings in a winnerto-state, loser-out game at the district tournament in Burlington Saturday.

The loss ended a miracle run by the Wildcats. Oak Harbor entered the tournament as the eighth and bottom seed after finishing tied for seventh in the regular-season standings.

The Wildcats started Saturday by facing Mount Vernon, the only undefeated team left in the tournament, and won 12-3.

Mount Vernon built a 3-0 lead after five innings as Oak Harbor kept squandering chances to score, leaving five runners in scoring position.

After knocking on the door for most of the game, the Wildcats blew it off its hinges by scoring six runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

The Burlington-Edison High School football grandstand’s back wall serves as the outfield fence in right centerfield. In the seventh, Anthony Stewart blasted a triple off the wall to score three runs.

Clay Doughty followed with a towering shot that hit the grandstand’s roof and bounced onto the football field for a home run, putting a cherry on top of the rally.

Tyler Snavely pitched a complete game three-hitter, giving up only one earned run.

He walked five and struck out five, including the final two batters.

Stewart and Doughty each ripped three hits; Snavely and Trent Benson had two each.

Immediately after the win over Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor took the field against top-seeded Anacortes. The Steamers defeated Oak Harbor 17-5 earlier in the tournament.

Down 4-1 heading into the top of seventh, the Wildcats scored three runs to tie the game and then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning.

Oak Harbor was on the cusp of another upset when it scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and had Anacortes on the ropes in the bottom half of the inning.

The Steamers had runners on first and second with two outs, then a ball scooted under an Oak Harbor outfielder’s glove, allowing both runners to score. Game, set, season.

Stewart and Danny Wolfe had two hits.

Whidbey golfers put in a strong showing around the state last weekend.

Whidbey Golf Club pro David Phay finished third in the 26th annual three-day Rosauer’s Open Invitational July 18-20 at the MeadowWood Golf Course at Liberty Lake.

The Pierces rallied to tie for the lead in regulation and then won the match with a birdie on the first playoff hole, their sixth birdie over the final 10 holes.

They shot a one-over through the first nine, but blistered the back side for a 67, four under par.

“We just got off to an awful start with bogeys on No. 2 and 5,” Roger Pierce said.

“Then we got a couple birdies and thought we were doing okay until we bogeyed No. 9.”

“On the back nine, we got on a roll and very lucky. We had two chip-in birdies and Doug drained about a 100-foot putt for another miracle,” he added.

The tournament was played under the Chapman stroke play format.

Doug Pierce, a 1990 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, is a math teacher and golf coach at Sedro-Woolley High School.

In addition to Friday’s victory, the fatherson team has combined to win the horse race event of the Whidbey Golf Club Men’s Invitational five times. Doug Pierce also captured the Invitational title in 2013.

Phay, who won the Rosauer’s Open in 2012, was tied for the lead after the first round Friday when he carded a 65. He still shared the top spot over 77 other golfers Saturday after shooting a 70.

Tim Feenstra of the Broadmoor Golf Club blitzed the field Sunday with a 61, the best single round in the tournament by four strokes, to finish with a 200, two strokes better than Drew McCullough of Meadow Springs Golf Course.

Phay shot a solid 69 Sunday to finish in a four-way tie for third with a 204.

The Rosauer’s is one of the top events of the Pacific Northwest Section of the Professional Golfers Association.

Langley Shakespeare festival hits the stage starting this weekend

Ken Green doesn’t look at belt sanders the way most contractors do.

Where most see a sanding machine, Green sees a dragster.

Green, owner of Green’s Custom Woodworks, modified his belt sander by cutting off a pound and a half of metal and replacing the handle with a duck decoy.

He then entered his peculiar-looking machine in Frontier Building Supply’s belt-sander races at the Oak Harbor store Friday and took first place.

The victory earned Green a $300 store gift certificate and a spot in the finals at the Anacortes store.

“The sanders all have a fixed speed,” said Green, who was second at last year’s event in Oak Harbor. “All the Porter Cables are running at 1,500 sanding feet per minute.”

Green worked for any advantage but said he believes a smooth belt surface and smooth track are the decisive factors.

“It only takes an inch. It doesn’t take much,” he said.

Frontier Supply Store puts on the annual event as a way to thank its customers, said

John Vanderwal, manager of the Oak Harbor store.

“We give them a day to have a break, feed them and have some fun,” Vanderwal said.

Last year, Gary Wray of Coupeville won the Freeland store’s race then captured the grand prize at Anacortes.

Green, from Oak Harbor, defeated Lee Eklund of Nautilus Construction in the finals in Oak Harbor.

Eklund brought a standard belt sander with no modifications.

“It’s a fun thing,” said Eklund, who earned a $200 gift certificate for second place. “I just got a belt sander out of the back of the trailer.

When I started it up, sawdust was blowing out of it.”

Competitors were paired against each other, placed their belt sanders on the end of a long track and watched them go. The sanders were plugged into long extension cords.

The races even drew Oak Harbor’s Mike Smith, a drag racer who competes in various Nostalgia Drag racing stops. He just came to watch.

“You know, I had to come to the drag races,” Smith said.

Zora Lungren performed in her first play, “Romeo and Juliet,” when she was a seventh grader attending Langley Middle School. Today, in a vintage theater tent propped in the field behind that same middle school, she is preparing to relate what is known in theater circles as “the unplayable scene.”

Lungren, who eventually left her small hometown to attend college in the Big Apple, is rehearsing to play Lady Anne Neville in Shakespeare’s “Richard III,” one of two roles she will perform in repertory as a part of this summer’s annual Island Shakespeare Festival.

Rose Woods, founder of the Island Shakespeare Festival, invited Lungren to return to Whidbey to be a part of this year’s performances in “Richard III” and as part of the ensemble in “Taming of the Shrew.”

“I can see all of my roots from the tent. It’s such a great feeling to be coming back to my roots in such a sweet way,” Lungren said.

For South Whidbey resident and Island Shakespeare company member Shelley Hartle, Lungren and their fellow actor Morgan Bondelid, a resident of Freeland, researching their roles has proven especially rewarding.

“This role is probably my favorite because she’s incredibly strong and smart and unyielding. She had to put up with a lot of crap,” said Bondelid of her character, Queen Elizabeth in “Richard III.” “This is a real person…Researching her has been really fascinating.”

Though Shakespeare’s play contains some historical discrepancies, Lungren noted that she, Woods and the rest of the group had decided to stick to the script while keeping historical context in mind.

The reason this scene is known as “unplayable,” according to Lungren, is that it requires the actress to make sense out of a nonsensical situation: Lady Anne Neville accepts a marriage proposal from the man who recently murdered her brothers and father, while in the line of her bereaved loved one’s funeral procession.

Jackie Apodaca, guest director of “Taming of the Shrew,” concurred with Lungren, Hartle, Woods and Bondelid that the works of classic playwrights and storytellers such as Shakespeare are timeless. Apodaca referenced the prime-time television series “The Bachelorette” as an example of classic tales such as “Romeo and Juliet” and “Twelfth Night” played out in a modern context.

In a testament to Shakespeare’s timelessness, Apodaca decided to take “Taming of the Shrew” to the Wild West, providing a backdrop she refers to as an ideal opportunity to make Shakespeare’s tale relatable in terms of U.S. history and the idea of the frontier, Manifest Destiny and the role of women in society. For Apodaca and many others, “Taming of the Shrew” is largely a story about women’s rights, and she and her cast intend to convey that message while also serving healthy doses of theatrical humor and entertainment.

Performances are free, though a hat will be passed around post-performance for those who wish to donate.
