WSDOT crews near Eastbound Nalley Valley project completion Photo Courtesy Washington State Department of Transportation State and local officials gathered Thursday to commemorate the near completion of a three-year highway construction project in the heart of Tacoma. The Eastbound Nalley Valley project is the second of three projects that aims to reduce collisions and congestion near the Interstate 5/State Route 16 interchange. "Today's ceremony highlighted the hard work and dedication of the many skilled workers who built several new bridges and demolished an aging 44-year-old viaduct," said Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Administrator Kevin Dayton. Recently, crews opened a new ramp from eastbound State Route 16 to the northbound collector/distributor leading to downtown Tacoma and northbound Interstate 5. In about three weeks, crews will open the final two ramps in the project that lead from South Sprague Avenue to northbound and southbound Interstate 5. In total, crews built five bridges with more than 50,000 cubic yards of concrete and about 8.4 million pounds of steel. Meanwhile, as crews are making the final push on the Interstate 5/State Route 16 Eastbound Nalley Valley project, nighttime drivers should plan ahead for a series of total night closures of eastbound State Route 16 at South Union Avenue. Other closures affecting Interstate 5 access will also take place. The closures will allow crews working for WSDOT to conduct additional roadway paving and striping. Here is the proposed schedule for closures: Mon., July 21, 11 p.m. Close all lanes of eastbound State Route 16 at South Union Avenue. Detour via South Union Avenue. Close South Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound State Route 16. Tues., July 22, 4 a.m. Reopen all lanes of eastbound State Route 16 at

The first project in the three-project Interstate 5/ State Route 16 interchange improvement plan was a new westbound viaduct that opened to traffic in June 2011. With the completion of the second project, the eastbound viaduct, the stage is now set for the third and final phase of construction in which crews will build a separate bridge to carry HOV traffic and HOV ramps between Interstate 5 and State Route 16. This $114 million project is a piece of the overall effort to build HOV lanes on Interstate 5, State Route 16 and State Route 167 in Pierce County.
