Pierce County Council approves restrictions on tractor-trailer parking After removing a provision dealing with increased parking fines in general, Pierce County Council voted 6-1 to restrict the parking of semi trailers along the roadside in certain areas of the county at night. Citing safety concerns for pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists, the ordinance bans commercial semi drivers from parking their trailers in the public right of way in designated residential areas between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Violating the new rules, which take effect Fri., Aug. 1, will result in $175 fines by the sheriff's department. The overnight ban applies to public right of ways in unincorporated residential areas within Eatonville, Frederickson, Gig Harbor, Midland, Parkland, South Hill, and Spanaway. "I began receiving repeated complaints from people in these parts of the county, asking us to do something to keep their streets clear of the unwanted obstructions," said Councilmember Jim McCune, who sup-

Clover Park School District

$6.6M awarded for Beachwood Elementary School rebuild project Posted online Weds., July 16 Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn announced Tuesday the release of nearly $213 million in capital construction money to school districts throughout the state. Locally, Clover Park School District will receive approximately $6.6 million for a project to rebuild Beachwood Elementary School. The money, coupled with nearly $381 million in local school district funds generally available by capital bonds approved by voters in communities, will bring more than $594 million into the state's economy through school construction, according to Dorn. A total of 21 districts are ready to begin or continue work on 30 new school buildings or school modernization projects, added Dorn, and the state's school construction assistance program also includes approximately $890,000, which will fund public art allocations for new facilities. The funding is made available by the Legislature and approved by Gov. Jay Inslee. "I applaud the Legislature and Governor Inslee," said Dorn. "They recognize that up-todate, working buildings are essential to student learning, and that the state has some responsibility in that process." ported the measure. "Rather than an all-out ban that could have potentially had negative effects on businesses and the economy, the council reached this compromise and I'm pretty pleased with the result." Councilmember Rick Talbert, who also sponsored the ordinance, said he was aware of the limited number of areas to park tractor-trailers overnight, but that was a separate issue the council may take up at a future date. "The fact is that neighbors in these areas were experiencing an increase in these incidents and

something needed to be done to help curb that," said Talbert. "The drivers who were offloading their trailers weren't just catching a few winks and moving on. They would leave their trailers parked in these neighborhoods indefinitely, creating not just an eyesore but significant safety concerns as well." City of Tacoma

3 locals could be appointed to Events and Recognitions Committee Posted online Thurs., July 17 Three local residents could be formally appointed to the City of Tacoma's Events and Recognitions Committee this month. The nine-member committee consists of Tacoma residents, with representatives from each of Tacoma's five Council Districts, who bring a range of perspectives and expertise that focus on the City's commitment to celebrate civic engagement and special observations. The committee serves as an advisory and action committee on matters pertaining to City-hosted events and special recognition programs. The committee is responsible for planning, reviewing, and evaluating events; engaging the community in its fundraising efforts; and soliciting corporate and private sponsorships to leverage funds for Cityhosted events such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and the City of Destiny Awards. Events and Recognitions Committee members are recommended by Tacoma City Council's Economic Development Committee and appointed by Tacoma City Council. The City of Tacoma issued a call for applications last month. The deadline expired on Fri., June 27, and four candidates applied: Beverly Bowen-Bennett (At-Large, Council District 3); Deirdre Evans (At-Large, Council District 1); Erin Lee (At-Large, Council District 2); and Twylia Westling (At-Large, Council District 2). Tacoma City Council's Economic Development Committee interviewed the candidates earlier this month. Tacoma City Council is tentatively scheduled to vote on Tues., July 29, on a resolution that would appoint Bowen-Bennett, Evans, and Lee to the City of Tacoma's Events and Recognitions Committee.
